Going up onstage instead of contestants' row.
« on: February 19, 2007, 02:21:52 PM »
Almost every week some airhead goes on stage when their name is called instead of contestants' row which means embarrasment for that person. Should the producers instruct the audience before every show not to do that? Why or why not?

I seem to remember them warning us against this - know we were defintely warned about going up the correct set of stairs.

In all honestly though, usually someone gets caught up in the excitement - can't blame 'em

Alumni's right; someone DOES get up in all the excitement and comes up on stage instead of comin' on down to the Row.  If there's one infamous (or famous) of these incidents on TPiR, it's gotta be this:

"Well, they're young; I'm sure they'll understand."
I just wanted to drop you a note and thank you for your love, affection and loyalty to me, drew, the models and.... The Price is Right....thank you for being such a "Loyal Friend & True". -Rich Fields (in an e-mail sent to me on 3/17/2010)

I support The Price is Right...even if nobody I know likes Drew Carey.

My thought is that they have 2 pages stationed near those stairs.  Shouldn't the page help "direct" the contestants toward contestants' row?

Once in a while, you'll see a really good page who will either stop a contestant from going on stage immediately after being called, or (occasionally) one will direct a contestant to the correct set of stairs when they try to use the "southpaw" steps.

Rod used to instruct the audience about this during his warm-ups.

I'm pretty sure in the two times I've been to PIR that Rich Fields has told those called as contestants to quickly come down to contestants row.  However, I can see someone in the excitement of the whole process running up on stage.

Additionally, I know that I've heard Rich Fields instruct the audience to use the "right" set of stairs when ascending to the stage.

Nope, they shouldn't. The pages are specifically told not to interfere with any contestants who are called. If a contestant forgets where to go and tries to come up on stage early, or goes up the wrong stairs, the page should extend a hand and help the contestant do just that. The reasoning is that it looks bad for a page to restrict a contestant on camera.

Those pages that do prevent a contestant from going the wrong way are told during the break not to do it again.

Rich does address which stairs to use during his warmup, along with a brief mention of filling in in Contestants' Row. But he also mentions many other things, so it's easy to understand how a contestant can forget what to do in the excitement of hearing their name called.

Especially since your perspective is reversed.  If you've prepped at home by thinking to yourself, "Remember to go up the right-side stairs," you'll goof when you're on the show.

I didn't realize until now that the pages weren't suppose to guide the contestants.  I remember seeing one page (a few years ago) guiding a contestant not to use the southpaw steps.  I thought that was part of their job.
As for going on stage prematurely, it's always fun to see someone do that.

I can understand if people get excited, and want to go up on stage to meet Bob Barker, but that's not to say I would. If they tell you to come on down, you go to Contestants' Row, and I am sure Rich covers this with everyone.

Also everyone should know which stairs to use to get up on stage, as there are arrows on the Contestants' Row podiums pointing them in the right direction. Personally I always thought that people who go up on stage right away make for good television. Another such person was seen on today's episode, when she came up on stage and kept kissing Bob Barker.

And I remember all of us being irked at him for doing so.
