Cheating in CSS (It's Not Cool...Don't Do It)
« on: January 22, 2014, 07:09:13 PM »
It has come to my attention that players may be using the site's Search function to look up prices of prizes offered during the showcases. I have been given several screenshots revealing players doing so recently, done by using the site's Who's Online feature, which shows the current site activity of members online at any given period.

Remember that looking up prices during live playings of CSS, whether they be from previous recaps, price lists, Google, and whatnot, is considered an act of cheating. The real show would ban you in a heartbeat if you were caught doing that. I have zero tolerance for it in CSS.

I will not mention names publicly at the moment to protect the guilty, but if you are doing this, you need to stop. Cheating in CSS gives players an advantage that they would otherwise not have, which makes the game less fun for those who do play by the rules. If you can't do it on the real show, don't do it in CSS, either. If said players continue to play outside of the spirit of the game by cheating, there could be serious consequences, up to and including vacancies of any records to-date and suspensions from CSS.

Most of you are good about playing by the rules...it's really a shame that these select few force me to have to write this. I really don't want to have to bring this up again. CSS is just a game, played solely for bragging rights...there's really no benefit to cheating anyways. :)

People are tired of the f**kery and drama, but if we'd actually talk to each other sometimes instead of a whole bunch of private conversations with other people, it'd go a long way to perhaps fixing the problems most seem to see in the site.

Hi all,

There hasn't really ever been a codification of what happens when you get caught doing this. I did give into temptation last week and tried to look up a prize. The higher-ups and I talked it over, and apparently there was another instance of cheating that I do not remember at all (I've been playing nearly 18 years now, and I think 15+ full-time!). There was also an incident where I evaded a ban just to play back in 2013-15, which frankly should have DQ'd me from ever hosting this game, but one thing led to another back in 2016 when the game was on life support.

I am thankfully at a different point in my life where I don't hypercare about CSS more than I should, and have been ready to move on anyways in the past few months. At the same time looking things up during a playing is ultimately a temptation I don't think I can live without, which is unfortunate but it just kind of is who I am, frankly. Therefore, I will be retiring from CSS (but continuing to host for you all) effective immediately.

And going forward, just to maintain how serious it is that CSS should be a "closed-book" game instead of "open-book", any instances of cheating are going to be met the same way: an instant permaban from playing again. We may have a whistleblower or two at times looking at the site activity during CSS time, so you are putting your CSS career on the line if you do search. I'll follow this post with a running list of permabans, that will hopefully just include me going forward.

Thanks!
S5x... the show's stabilized into something decent now, I guess...
