Say When!! (a "Price" variant), a 1961 telecast

Say When!! was a Goodson-Todman game on NBC that ran from 1961 to 1965. It was considered a variant on The Price Is Right in that it involved two players who selected prizes from a pool of prizes, with each item's value displayed on the contestants' tote screens. The object was to take as many prizes as possible without going over a target value. Art James was the host. This entails a show from 1961.

The two contestants: The returning champion having won two matches, Bernita Wallace is from Ashland, KY. The challenger is Marie Roels from Benoit WI.

For the first game, the target value is $950. The first four prizes:

*A six-day vacation for two in the Catskill Mountains.
*An accordion.
*A 14-ft. fiberglass sailboat.
*A sports dress, modeled by hostess Ruth Hasley.

Mrs. Roels, as challenger, selects first. She selects the Catskills vacation. It is worth $320. It is replaced on the prize board with a Westinghouse air conditioner.

Mrs. Wallace selects the sailboat. It is worth $467. It is replaced on the board with a Polaroid 110-V land camera.

Mrs. Roels selects the air conditioner. It is worth $269, bringing her total to $589. The air conditioner is replaced on the board with an archery set from Paragon sporting goods. Ruth is demonstrating it and is missing the target terribly, much to the studio's hilarity. Cut to Art, who has a trick arrow through his head.

Mrs. Wallace selects camera. It is worth $173, bringing her total to $640. It is replaced with a "blank check," where a grocery item is displayed and contestants may select multiples of it op to 50 cases, with its total value added to the score.  The item is La Choy Chinese dinners.

Mrs. Roels selects the dress. It is worth $245, bringing her total to $834. The dress is replaced on the board with a Lucien-Picard watch.

Mrs. Wallace selects the "blank check," taking 40 cases of the Chinese dinners. It is valued at $283, bringing her total to $923. The dinners are replaced on the board with a Puritron air purifier.

Mrs. Roels must select a prize that is more than $89 and less than $116. She selects the watch. The value of the watch is $200, which puts her over. Mrs. Wallace wins game 1.

The tote machines, like on The Price Is Right, are by the American Totalizator Company (known today as AmeriTote), a division of Universal Control Inc. A promo for NBC's Saturday morning shows (King Leonardo & His Short Subjects, The Shari Lewis Show, Fury, The Lone Ranger) with Shari Lewis and her puppet Lamb Chop is shown.

The target value for game two is $2300. The first four prizes:

* A two-tier chinchilla capelet.
* A gold and star ruby 18-karat ring.
* A 7-piece dining room grouping in cast aluminum.
* A an electric runabout car with a 2-HP engine from the Spiegel catalogue.

Mrs. Roels selects first. She takes the dining room grouping. It is worth $854. It is replaced on the board with a 21-in Admiral color TV.

Mrs. Wallace selects the TV. It is worth $695. A pause for station identification is next. When the show returns, there is a ticket plug for people who want to see the show in person and possibly be a contestant (all contestants are culled from the audience). The address is:
NBC Ticket Division
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York 20, N.Y.

Another promo for NBC is shown.

The TV is replaced on the board with a 36-inch gas range.

Mrs. Roels selects the stove. It is worth $342 bringing her total to $1196. The stove is replaced on the board with a "blank check" for Dad's root beer. 1 to 250 cases may be chosen; there are six half-gallon bottles per case.

Mrs. Wallace selects the electric car. It is worth $1295, bringing her total to $1990. The car is replaced on the board with a 30-volume children's library.

Mrs. Roels selects the blank check, taking 200 cases of root beer. It is valued at $588, bringing her total to $1784. The blank check is replaced on the board with a lounge chair.

Mrs. Wallace selects the children's library. It is worth $240 for a total of $2230. It is replaced on the board with a blank check with Lifelite rechargeable flashlights. 1 to 30 flashlights can be chosen.

Mrs. Roels selects the blank check, taking 30 flashlights. The value is $389, bringing her total to $2173. The black check is replaced with a 35mm slide projector.

Mrs. Wallace, being within $250 of the target says "when" and freezes her score (her option upon the player's turn at that point).

Mrs. Roels is $127 away from the target. She selects the chair. It is worth $80 for a total of $2253, winning the game for her and tying the match.

An animated PSA about forest fires is aired.

Mrs. Wallace and Mrs. Roels will play the rubber game on the next show. Play Your Hunch follows (and The Price Is Right follows that.)
