There was one a few years back....a contestant got sick during the show, and they had to get a replacement.

No, it's happened at least one other time. There was a woman in a late season 38 show that fainted and was taken to the hospital during the second pricing game so her sister replaced her in Contestants' Row.

The rare contestant wearing a Plinko shirt got to play the game! The Pac-Man light was the only SP I would say was definitely tricky. The second chip bounced right off the $10,000 slot and into the $0 one, but at least she got the $10,000 on her final chip.

$19,715 looked good in One Away but unfortunately it was just a bit off.

A very rare contestant replacement. Her husband got her to the Showcase but then sadly both contestants overbid.

A mid-show replacement and a Plinko shirt wearing contestant actually playing the game on the same show! This is an historic moment indeed!

So many questions about Paul:
  • Is he now ineligible for the next 10 years?
  • What if he had been on the show in the last 10 years? Would he not have been allowed to be the sub?
  • Who signed all the paperwork at the end of the show? Presumably Debbie had already left the studio.
  • What would they have done if Debbie came to the show alone?

My assumption is that Paul remains eligible since he was replacing Debbie and playing in her place rather than being called down himself and would've been allowed to replace her had he been on the show in the last 10 years or ineligible for another reason. That is an interesting question as to what they would do if a contestant that came alone had to be replaced-- would they just call down a new contestant if he/she was in Contestant's Row and just have the two remaining contestants spin in the Showcase Showdown if they played their pricing game already?

The contestant being replaced today ... certainly a rarity, but it brings to mind the question (and it may be out of left field):

What if a contestant who is at least called to Contestant’s Row — is found to be ineligible during taping, particularly if he or she has gotten on stage and played a pricing game?

Think of it this way ... what if the infamous Flip Flop cheater or any one of the Three Strikes cheaters had been disqualified on the spot and told to go home? What about the rest of the taping? Do they just call another contestant to participate in the Showcase Showdown, for instance?

Just curious about the policy for other situations when a contestant is replaced midway through taping a show like TPiR.

It would be pretty tough to get called down if one is not eligible. The first step of getting into the audience is filling out and signing a 4 page contract. Then they take your picture and scan your ID. The gal that took my picture said they have been doing that for about 30 years. That is just the start of the about 4 hour wait till the taping starts so they have plenty of time to sort out those not eligible to be contestants.

It has happened a few times-- at the end of the show the announcer said on a voiceover that the contestant was found to be ineligible and will not receive any of their prizes.

It has happened a few times-- at the end of the show the announcer said on a voiceover that the contestant was found to be ineligible and will not receive any of their prizes.

That was back when technology was far less advanced, though, and I'd venture a guess that none of the contestants' info was kept on computers--more likely in a huge set of filing cabinets that the producers didn't have time to look through before the taping. Nowadays, it's a 5-second search through a database to make sure the Social Security numbers don't match and the eligibility is determined in a snap.
