NFL Off-Season: Draft, Free Agency, & Other Storylines
« on: April 29, 2021, 05:47:06 PM »
I thought it was too early to start new thread for the 2021 season, and the context of this post would be off-topic from the 2020 NFL thread (plus it’s been idle soon after the Super Bowl).  However, the NFL has turned into a year-long product over the past several years, to where its Combine AND Schedule Release are more anticipated than actual games of consequence in the other (three major) sports!

The NFL Off-Season, which includes Free Agency and the Draft in addition to what I mentioned about, has been must-see TV if not something you’d read up on within the Internet around the time Roger Goodell took over.  They have come such a long way.

The NFL Draft is tonight (April 29, 2021) and Trevor Lawrence is expected to go first overall to Jacksonville.   I think Zach Wilson is slated to be the next pick for New York, and then it’s anybody’s guess.

The top story that might outrank every second of the Draft is Aaron Rodgers and his reported decision to move on from the Green Bay Packers.  It’s been a mess for quite a while, and while a trade was recently reported as unlikely, there may be optimism for one.

Of course, Tim Tebow is trying to make a comeback, as a tight end, about a decade too late.  Other news includes personnel changes among the players.  Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, and Julian Edelman are some of several people calling it quits.  Former Rams QB (Jared Goff) and former Lions QB (Matthew Stafford), both first overall picks, swapped teams, and Carson Wentz left Philadelphia to fill in the void in Indianapolis left by Rivers’ retirement.

Finally, there will be 17 games starting this season.   The post season is pushed back a week, which is a bit odd since there is a void between the third pre-season week and Week One.  Usually the NFL doesn’t like to stay idle upon its start, which is the Hall Of Fame festivities

Actually, Tim Tebow trying to come back makes sense-- he retired from baseball earlier this Spring and Tebow's coach at Florida Urban Meyer is now the coach in Jacksonville.

So as for the other QBs after Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, Trey Lance goes #3 to the 49ers, the Bears traded up to draft Justin Fields at #11, and Mac Jones goes to the Patriots at #15. Heisman winner Devonta Smith went to the Eagles at #10.

Well, it looks like Tom Brady has his other successor.  With Mac Jones in New England, you might have fellow SEC star Kyle Trask for the Bucs starting in 2023.

Each of the past two players selected first overall have been reunited with players they had success with during their collegiate days.  Joe Burrow & WR Ja Marr Chase for Cincinnati and Trevor Lawrence & RB Travie Etienne for Jacksonville.  I think the Bengals & Jaguars definitely play each other.

Speaking of that, the 2021 NFL Schedule release is scheduled for Wednesday, May 12

Atlanta needs offensive line help. So far they've drafted a tight end, a safety and an offensive guard.

The story about Aaron Rodgers' "It's Complicated" relationship with the Green Bay Packers has become more muddled as during a talk off-camera at the Kentucky Derby with NBC's Mike Tirico. Tirico noted this about the conversation they had.

Quote
"I can tell you, I can characterize Aaron as disappointed that news has come out on this rift with the Packers. He expressed a couple of times how much he loves Green Bay, loves the fans, loves the franchise. There is fissure, there is a chasm between management and the reigning NFL MVP, We're just not sure how this is going to play out. I'll watch closely over the next couple of weeks to see what we hear from the Packers side and when Aaron does speak. Interesting times ahead for sure.”

And also, Yahoo Sports reported today that Rodgers isn't going to return to the team as long as Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is in charge.

This morning, the NFL announced the Week One games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the Dallas Cowboys to open the 2021 NFL Season on Thursday, September 9, at Raymond James Stadium. And the full schedule is set to be revealed this evening.

Not surprised at all they selected Cowboys vs Bucs for the opening night matchup. That was the best possible matchup.

Tom Brady's reunion against the Patriots will take place in week 4 on Sunday Night Football.
