The coffee picture of the mountain climber in Cover Up was really impressive.

(Wow, there's a sentence that probably no one's ever said before.)

Also impressive, although not in a good way:  Every single decision made during the first Showcase Showdown was wrong.

Can someone clarify the odds when the third player ties with the leader on their first spin?

55˘ and up:  Better odds taking the spin-off.
45˘ and below:  Better odds spinning again.
50˘ exactly:  Odds are the same either way, do whichever you prefer.

If you like seeing people win money, going to the spinoff allows both you and your opponent to try for the dollar again, so it's the nice thing to do.

I didn’t have a problem with Bailey spinning again on 60.  I disagreed with the decision, but I get wanting to close out that round without giving your opponent a second chance at a better score.  In this case, Bailey had a 2/5 chance at surviving, which, while less than 50%, it’s not by much.  Unlike Dublin, Bailey already won something significant.  I didn’t like it, and it turned out to be the wrong result, but I didn’t have a big problem with it either.  It would’ve been a moot point had Christina stayed put on 65 (not as nasty of a number as say 55).  Then you might have had Bailey spinning again on 45 or 10 (or maybe winning) with 70, assuming her spin was the same speed and strength.

The odds on TPIR in general have not played out to the benefit of its contestants over the years (or decades) so sometimes a risk may be warranted.  8 different outcomes win it for Bailey including one for money and a spin.   The spin off is great but it’s still a coin flip.  Respected the risk (you never know whether Dublin could’ve ended up with a much better score or a worse one with only one spin to win and advance) but agree it would’ve been better off going for the spin off there (at least it was based off 60 cents, and not something like 75 cents).  I personally would have chosen a spin off at 45 cents (with 20 or 25 I’d be spinning again for sure)

Bailey had a 40% chance of winning SCSD #1 by spinning again after tying on 60 cents but she would've had a 50% chance of winning by taking the spin-off. Therefore, she made the wrong decision. (So did everyone else during that SCSD, like Steve said.)

So it's just that simple? I was thinking it would be more complicated like the first spinner getting a 65.

Yes, it really is that simple. The reason is that for the third spinner, the probability of winning is the same as the probability of not going over. However, that's not true for the first spinner, which makes the math much more complex for them.

You'd think with a contestant named Dublin, there may have been a trip to Ireland involved. *dad joke intended* Good show though.

Or wish that he had bid closer to the actual price on his showcase, in order to be a Dublin Showcase Winner ;)
