2025 College Football Season
« on: September 02, 2025, 10:21:32 AM »
The 2025 College Football Season got off to a rather tremendous start with Ohio State surviving against Texas to start their championship defense.  Well, there were some games in the two days that preceded that Saturday.  Actually the weekend before had games that counted (the so-called Week Zero).

So after legendary Coach Lee Corso chose the headgear for the last time (same as the one he selected for the first time), everything really got going.  Big wins from Penn State, Oregon, Tennessee and LSU on Saturday, but I can't say the same for Alabama, Texas, and Clemson.  Sunday and Monday saw a couple games.  Well, Sunday was decent unlike Monday.  Miami survives over Notre Dame, while TCU more than escapes against North Carolina.  Things looked crisp & decent for Bill Belichick's debut and UNC, and then it really didn't.

As is the saying, it's only one week.  We don't know how UNC or even TCU will perform this season.  IIRC, the final game of Week One had Florida State pummeling Pittsburgh, also as a road team.  Turns out within their undefeated year they did that to everybody else (except SEC West teams of course).

A similar playoff format from 2024 occurs this season.  There are some changes but it's still 12 teams; Monday 01.19.26 is the date the National Championship Game is scheduled for.

I think this the last season the game I mentioned above airs exclusively on ESPN.  Then it'll return back to network TV for the first time in over a decade & a half.  However, with the new EPSN app, I guess anything is subject to change.

The oddsmakers really overestimate Georgia. They were 4-10 against the line last year, and they were giving 38-1/2 at kickoff Saturday against Marshall. Final was 45-7 Georgia with Marshall barely covering. No line against Austin Peay this week, so wallets will be in storage. The real fun starts next week when the Dawgs start play against SEC opponents, which increases to nine games next year.

The first AP Top 25 is out and Ohio State is the #1 team followed by Penn State, LSU, Georgia and Miami to round out the first five. Texas drops from 1 to 7, but Alabama had the biggest drop, from #8 to #21.

Week two sees Texas and 'Bama rebound huge. Two losses among top 25 teams (Michigan, Arizona State), so the Tide will inch their way up the rankings later today. Among the top 10 all should be status quo.

Update: As it turns out, Georgia drops to #6 after their underwhelming 28-6 win against Austin Peay (line was 45-1/2) while Oregon jumps to #4 and Miami sits at 5.

Rankings for September 14 are out; Clemson drops out after losing on a :00 FG to unranked/undefeated Georgia Tech (now no. 19). The first ten are Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia (who still hasn't beat the spread), LSU, Oregon, Miami, Texas, Illinois, Florida State and Texas A&M.

According to sources, ACC ref Gary Patterson abruptly resigns after a controversial and bizarre replay situation between UConn vs. Syracuse.

For the record, Notre Dame, winless after 2 games, is the first team in quite a long time to be ranked in the AP Top 25 with such a record.  Coincidentally, the University won the National Championship the year that occurred.  To be fair, however, they've lost both of their first games by a combined 4 points against ranked teams

#3 (Coaches poll, #5 AP) Georgia has a bye week this Saturday (running joke: take the bye and the points!) as do #1 Ohio State and #2 Penn State while #4 Miami hosts Florida in a prime time tilt, Oregon is at Oregon State and LSU squares off against SE Louisiana.

Interestingly enough, Gameday is not going to Georgia/Alabama.  Looks like the Big 10 is king after all!

Miami jumps from #4 to #2 in yesterday's rankings while Penn State and LSU each drop a notch in spite of victories. Iowa saw the biggest jump, from #19 to #11. Alabama drops three spots to 17 as they face Georgia who is a FG favorite this Saturday night.

Something that I've thought of throughout the month.  Today could be the first time (in quite a long time) that a home team being a road Alabama team does not storm the field.  On one hand, I might laugh if the 1.5 decade-long streak continues.  On the other hand, Georgia might lose again to the Tide

And they did. A definite shake-up in the top ten spots in the rankings later.

Only one Top 5 team won this weekend.  I don't think it'll be too bad, but definitely a shake-up for sure.  Within the four teams that did not win on Saturday, the teams that won are all ranked, including Mississippi in the Top 15, and Top Ten Oregon.  LSU was the only road team to lose

Ohio State stays on top while Georgia drops to #10 in the coaches poll. Alabama jumps to #11 while Ole Miss and Texas A&M make their presence among the top five spots. In the AP poll, Georgia is 12 and Alabama is 10.

Elsewhere, Arkansas fires their head coach Sam Pittman. Bobby Petrino will be the interim coach.
