Drew and the doughnuts
« on: January 26, 2026, 11:26:06 AM »
When did Drew start the whole "doughnut" bit when the arrow is bent on the Showcase Showdown wheel? At times, he makes a bigger deal out of that than the spins themselves. It's a weird distraction that doesn't add anything to the segment.

it's been a thing for two or three seasons I think.  It needs to go away IMHO
My taping history:

1 Bob taping somewhere around 1986
30 Drew tapings starting February 5th 2024 ending October 9, 2025
My 'Come on Down' moment occurred on October 8th 2025 (1284L).  Air date of February 5th 2026. Two years exactly from my first taping.

At a taping, I heard an audience member ask a staff member what the bendy thing was about, and their response was "We don't know either. It's just how Drew's mind works. He just came up with it one day." I don't get it either, but whatever.

I think Drew originally intended to retire the bit at the end of last season. I was at the first week of tapings after the season break, and there were multiple opportunities for him to make a bendy joke and he didn't take it. But since then some contestants made bendy t-shirts and must have asked Drew about it, and I think he realized the bit had caught on to the point where people expected it.

Password looks like any idiot could have made it up, but we have 14 of our people working on that show. There is a great complexity behind the screen. It requires great work to keep it simple."

Actually, it started last February.

I don't mind him finding ways to add his own little running jokes, the only issue with this one is that its meaning isn't entirely clearly conveyed. When I first heard it I thought he had given that name to people falling when they spin.

If, for example, someone spins a Bendy and it's followed by Drew calling it out, a quick closeup on it, and a model handing the contestant an actual donut when they're done, you at least see clearly what he's talking about. Unnecessary? Absolutely, but it's something new other than asking everyone to say hello all the time.

Fun fact: Evelyn Wong, the 5th person to be called on the first show (9/4/72), was actually the very first contestant to directly be called to come on down!  The original first four (Sandy Flornor, Paul Levine, Connie Donnel, Myra Carter) were individually told to stand up, and then, as a group, were invited to come on down.

Without a doubt he was letting it drop... and then those "bendy DOughnut shirts" appeared......  /me runs and hides from all the boardies throwing stale doughnuts at me!
Came on down 5/21/25, 3rd position, initial 4, first on stage, won PAP, last to spin on SSD, p1 got 90, p2 spun out, I got 75 in total.  10 year countdown.  Attended 18 tapings.  2 in 2020.  February 5th, 2024 x2.  February 6th, 2024 (my wife Sherry won her PG & SC, aired April 12th).  February 7th, 2024 (My son lost PG and SC overbid Aired April 29th).  June 2024 5 tapings (incl primetime).  2025-January 22nd and 23rd x2, February 3rd, 4th (10K), and 5th x2.

I thought the producers would flip a gasket when Drew actually stopped the show one day to have the models serve donuts to the contestants at the wheel when one of them had a bendy.  Then the contestants had to hand their donut back to Drew so they could spin the wheel.  Awkward!  And that was the last time THAT happened.

That's a good idea...and that'll put a sock in the "donut joke" haters who keep complaining about it.

Have a bendy, get a donut.  :-D
