Canada's TPIR has a premiere date!
« on: February 04, 2026, 05:29:18 PM »
During today's episode on City TV, a new promo was shown for The Price is Right Tonight, which is Canada's version of the show.  From what I saw, it's looking like it will be an exciting series

The official premiere date is set for Tuesday, March 10

Here's the promo if you want to see it: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1259445276098890

Yeah, I guess spoilers could be common if they're going the extra mile to reel in the viewers. I for one don't watch a lot on an actual TV outside of game shows, and even when I do have access nowadays, it's on a PVR, so I'm personally not too worried about getting spoiled.

Also, I love how the first reply to a TPiR Canada thread came from someone with "sorry" in their username. :P

(I'll see myself out now...)

Looks like fun, and the set is really nice.

I do miss the days when international versions of Tpir had their own set and themes.

Seems like with most foreign game shows in the last I would say 15 years try to be as accurate to the original version as much as Possible. I think Who Wants to be A Millionaire is responsible for this trend.

A little who's who ahead of tonight's premiere:

ANNOUNCER: Ben Shulman is the voice of the Toronto Blue Jays on Sportsnet Radio.  He is the son of Dan Shulman, who does the play-by-play on TV, and also covers college basketball on ESPN

MODEL: Ashley Callingbull-Rabbit is a member of the Enoch Cree Nation in Alberta.  She was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2024, becoming the first indigenous Canadian to win the title, and placed in the top 12 at Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico.  Previously, she was Mrs. Universe 2015

Will there be any way available to watch the premiere in the US?

It’s been a pretty good show. Definitely some things off but pretty lively. The games look spot on. Not needed for functionality but I think for looks Howie should of had a skinny mic. Plus being Canadian it’s all tax free and they get all their winnings.

I've waited so long to see an English version of Price produced in Canada and I couldn't believe how disappointed I was in it. Howie and (most of) the set were the only highlights. It felt like one of the cheap knockoff international versions of the show. CityTV likely greenlit this series because the CBS show does well for them in daytime and it does well because people know and love The Price is Right. This was an over-produced, chopped down version of what people love. There were ways to make this its own without butchering it. They lost me completely with the mid-Pricing game commercial break and ridiculous dramatic suspense. I truly had high hopes for this, but I can only hope if they pick up any additional episodes that they tweak the format and look at what makes The Price is Right what it is.

I was in the audience for an episode (not the one that aired tonight) and I could not agree with you more. Howie had a few good one liners ("you go on the trip, your family gets a snack") but besides that it was terrible. IMO, for those of you wanting to watch from the US, don't bother.

The worst part for me though was four long drawn out pricing games, one showcase showdown where two advance, and lousy showcases.

Was looking forward to the premiere of this version, but overall it felt like a bit of a disappointment.  Some thoughts on it:

-I liked the set a lot.  I think they found the right balance between familiar and unique.

-When the first IUFB was a $385 set of power tools I was worried that we were going to see an embarrassingly el cheapo budget, but that ended up being an outlier and overall I thought the level of prizes was fine.  $25000 is about $18500 in US dollars but being tax free is nice.  Two games for cash and two for trips.  No car on this show.   We know from promos that cars will be offered, but obviously not on every episode.  Showcase values with the exchange rate factored in were comparable to a daytime episode.

-Howie was ok.  He had a few good lines but overall he felt like someone still learning the ropes.  Maybe more experience fixes that.  He did do a great job on the climax of Master Key, laying out the stakes, letting the moment simmer, and then going to the reveal.

-The quick cut camera work as the Plinko chip dropped was bizarre.  Since there was only one I don’t know if that’s how they plan to always do it or if they were trying to distract us from the fact that the chip was hugging the side all the way down and never had any chance of going to the middle.

-No inspiration putt in Hole In One?  Come on, that belongs as part of the package.  Kudos to the contestant for a perfect grocery sequence.   I was wondering if there would be a bonus since it was never mentioned, but she was in fact awarded $500.

-The four player Showcase Showdown served its purpose.  I don’t really have an issue with the format.  The biggest problem with it is that they went right into it without ever explaining how it worked.  That they spun in the order they played their pricing games instead of being ranked by winnings was never explained.  That the top two scores would advance to the Showcase was never outright explained.  I assume that the standard $1000/$10000/$25000 potential bonuses were in place but who knows for sure since they were never explained.  The last spinner went over leaving us with two contestants who both had 90 cents advancing to the Showcase.  But we’re having a spin-off for some reason?  Apparently the Showdown score was used to determine top winner/runner up for the Showcase, which is why they had to go to a spin-off, but this was never adequately explained.  If they are going to do something that works differently from the way it does on the US version, they need to clearly explain it, especially on the first episode.

-Howie joked at one point that Ben Schulman was announcing from home in his pyjamas.  That may have been true since it didn’t seem like he was live in the studio and if he isn’t that’s a huge miss.   Having an announcer who is an active participant in the show is an important part of the package.

-I underbid on pretty much everything.   I didn’t recalibrate my brain to think in Canadian Dollars.

Another thing I thought I would share before I forget, the wheel was extremely loose. It must have made five to six revolutions on each spin (which of course was edited out) but there is no way we will ever see it not go all the way around unless Dick van Dyke were playing, and even he's in pretty good shape for 100.

Watching the clips available on YouTube, yes overproduced for sure. The cuts before the reveals are just so unnecessary. Howie and the announcer Ben did pretty well though, and the set is nice. I didn't really care for the Plinko gimmick, and the way they shot the chip dropping was weird.
