Winter Olympics 2026
« on: February 06, 2026, 12:20:42 AM »
I usually wait for someone else to start a discussion like this but I think it's close enough to the event that it's a good time to begin it.

let's just begin with curling for Canada and Italy. they played one round on the broadcast before saying if you want to see the rest go onto our very expensive streaming service. (it's like more than double what every other streaming services currently asking for) if they were going to do that at least give us the dignity, and I mean just plain dignity of saying portion of curling or preview of curling. when you're saying you're going to put a match, you expect it to at least finish. they sure are not afraid to go overtime for hockey which ate up some of the preview.

they did not even air it the entire half hour that they promised and went to big air (which is literally the name of the event, as dumb as it sounds) around 25 minutes, instead of 30. not to mention they were just showing backstage for that 5 minutes where they could show actual sports coverage if they did curling. I would say the actual broadcasting of the match was fine. they were not overly one-sided like they usually are and I have to at least give them credit there.

they decided to do the split screen for a big air. (which is snowboarding down the big slope basically) this was a great choice considering they were still doing matches. Something I have seen before on some cable networks like USA but not really on any of the network shows. it's actually funny that they were showing more snowboarding during the commercials then during the actual run time. (A lot of the run time with them showing backstage stuff, but that's what you get with NBC) I love that we have to hear "it's nice to watch them mature." I don't wanna watch them a "mature" I want to watch them to snowboarding. maybe you guys think we wanna watch "them mature" but that is not why we came onto this broadcast.

I am wondering how they are going to deal with la 2028 because I do remember hearing that they actually have to keep it very accessible in years in which they are the host country. peacock is not accessible if your charging the most amount amount of money for it. (I feel like they will get in trouble for price gouging during the Olympics if they do this during the LA Olympics like there  likely would have been in trouble if they did the simulcast back in the 90s during Atlanta) this peacock exclusive stuff is going to be a big pain once network tv is gone but for now let's just be happy we have something. I can't wait to write more as the days go by but I feel like this is a great place to start.

Peacock is literally $10.99 a month...it is actually one of the cheaper streaming services. A cable subscription will run you at least five times more. I fail to see the problem.

Even then, depending on your television provider, it may even be free...

This seems more like a rant about broadcasting than the Olympics thenselves...
People are tired of the f**kery and drama, but if we'd actually talk to each other sometimes instead of a whole bunch of private conversations with other people, it'd go a long way to perhaps fixing the problems most seem to see in the site.

We of course hope the Jamaican bobsled team does well during this Olympiad.  I've always hoped they will eventually make it to the medal stand, and perhaps this will be the time they do.

I was checking it a few months ago (during Black Friday) and it was $29. I didn't even think to check it recently because I assumed they were going to keep the high price until after the Olympics but it looks like it went back down to its proper $10 price. in terms of the other half of the post yes this is basically a rant about broadcasting, this is the Olympics so everyone does pretty nicely, the only thing that is ready to usually complain about is the broadcast. it is the way people are watching the games after all. granted I felt the bait and switch was a little bit of a cheap shot even for NBC. (I kind of thought there was a law that forced stations to show the entire broadcast of a sports game once it's on. (made after the Heidi game) which made the situation pretty weird. unless this law is only for football.) I do this with the masters each year and I decided to include the Olympics in my rants. granted you are correct with streaming it is a little less relevant than it is for the masters where there is really only one main broadcast. (unless you have a jillion screens for each hole camera, something that I am pretty sure only the ultra fans are doing) my complaints are not to the athletes themselves. I am happy that other people are posting though.

Because if they start out showing it on regular NBC, that costs $0 - thus switching it to something that has a cost (and requires other means to view it, since one can also still watch TV on a TV that can not get such other sources) can be an issue.

Although, over time it seems they always showed parts of things, simply due to there being so many events happening at the same time, but perhaps that was noted better or just more expected in the past?
While many may choose to have cable, not all do and many places one can watch "regular" TV for nothing over the air still.

My favorite events are snowboarding, skiing, and bobsledding.

And then there's also sports/disciplines that are on the chopping block, like Nordic Combined (which still doesn't have women inclusion, hope that changes) and parallel giant slalom for snowboarding. This gives more urgency for fans to watch these events live and/or on demand to keep the sports/disciplines alive for the next Winter Olympics in 2030 (and be fully gender equal in the process), as the IOC is monitoring viewership and engagement interest.

you can go with the cheaper with-ads option and still see the Olympics coverage

also, unlike the aforementioned Heidi incident, we're dealing with multiple events that are happening live ON ANOTHER CONTINENT
