Title: What on a game show scared you as a child?

For me it was the dragon roar on Tic Tac Dough. So, what scared you on a game show?

The Dragon was my biggest fear as well, but the Scrabble Stoppers were also a bit unnerving, particularly with no warning coming for them and the exploding flashing effects used for them.  I'll also admit the original introductory sequence to the Wheel of Fortune Final Puzzle bonus format--dimming the studio lights to black over the drumroll--wasn't the best way to do it for me either.

But now, I love that sound effect !  :-)

ironically it used to be the clangs and whoops on tpir. anytime i saw bob go over to the giant price tag i always cringed cuz i thought it always meant they would play grand game. but nowadays i love hearing that sound, probably because it adds excitement to a big win or something.

the time up sound when it was time to end the show on millionaire also used to scare me.

The "time's-up" horn from Millionaire, Pathfinder's wrong answer sound effect (EROoooooooo!), and the Punisher from UH-OH!.  Oh, and during Wheel of Fortune's Halloween weeks they change the sound effect when a contestant pulls the Bonus Round card from its holder.  Most often, it's a blood-curdling scream.

This one. Really hard. No other sound effect ever scared me nearly as much as this one growing up. Still doesn't stop me from thinking Jeopardy's the greatest game show on right now, though.

There wasn't anything on a game show that scared me as a child. Mainly because it was the late 50s to early 60s when I was a child and the shows were pretty failsafe. But a couple of things made me tense up a bit: the contestant tracing the hidden object on Camouflage, and on the nighttime Price Is Right (provided mom and dad let me stay up to see it) two unfrozen bidders approaching $10,000 bids (the daytime show never approached $10,000 bids).

The Penny Ante sound effect from TPiR.  Ironically, it later became one of my favorite games, and I even had an avatar pic of it on here for a while.  Also, the clangs and whoops from a DSW, although never from any other time they used it, oddly enough.  I'm sure there was probably at least one other thing, but my memory is a bit fuzzy (too tired to think straight)

What always scared me was the Starcrossed cue used in Credit Card.  That, and the entire Credit Card set.  I literally used to hide whenever I would hear that cue played.

I also found the opening to Bob's first show (when watching the 25th anniversary show) to be scary.  Now that I think about it, I think the reason was because the audio was out of sync, and so it sounded like someone was being attacked.  It also looked very bizarre to see the "New" on the doors, the brown set, and Bob with dark hair, when I had grown up with the show in its current format since around 1988.  (I used to watch that anniversary show at least once a month, but I would always either mute it or fast forward it when they showed Bob's first entrance).

The "time's-up" horn from Millionaire

DO NOT use that as your computer's "shut down" sound effect, especially if you leave your computer on 24/7 and have the speakers turned up.  I can not count the times that I was fast asleep and my computer, for some reason, decided it needed to restart.

It made me go "Who? Wa? WHAT THE [VERY LONG STREAM OF PROFANITY] WAS THAT????!!!?!?!?!?!"

Every. Freaking. Time.

It's weird, I've been thinking about this for a good 15 minutes and can't really come up with anything, which surprises me, because I liked video and computer games just as much as a child and can list all kinds of non-scary things that spooked the heck out of me as a child in that category.

Thinking about it some more, I do remember one thing, but it's a really weird one... when I was young I saw an episode of Wheel of Fortune where the score was tied at the end so they had to play a tiebreaker round with only the two leading contestants.  I was very young at the time, and my brain missed or mixed up pretty much all of the details.  Somehow I wound up getting it in my head that one of the players was disqualified because the flipper in front of them on the wheel broke off.  So for a few years it always scared me when a contestant had to pick a prize wedge up off the wheel, because I was afraid they might accidentally snap the flipper off the wheel and get disqualified.

When Bob had dark hair it was quite alright for the contestants to "harm" him. However when he decided to let his hair go white for me as a child and probably still right up until he retired whenever a contestant goes completely wild once they get called on down I feared that Bob would get hurt if that contestant got out of the row there. There was even one occasion that when a male contestant won on Temptation he started to carry Bob there. Luckily I changed the channel before that happened. When I did changed it back to TPIR it showed that still image of him carrying Bob there. As a result of that I was just too afraid to watch the rest of the show for fear that Bob was hurt which luckily he wasn't. Lol.

The explicit showering of balloons and confetti on $100,000 Name That Tune (Jim Lange version) were too much for me to handle, as well as the old sound effects on Wheel of Fortune (the current ones came in 1989).

The "whoosh" sound on The Challengers (when all three players chose the same question) and the sirens from Fun House (when the Secret Power Prize tag was grabbed) also creeped me out.

Probably the top two choices:

Tic Tac Dough's bonus round, "Beat the Dragon." The roar of the dragon and his pixelated self popping out of the box whenever a (losing) contestant would select the box that concealed him was just scary to me. Today, it's laughable.

• The finale of Rhyme and Reason. As a 4-year-old at the time this show was cancelled (in July 1976), I must have had the show on, because I seemed to (faintly) recall people destroying things and sparks flying where the light bulbs used to be. I didn't remember seeing this on TV until reading about it years later in "The Game Show Encyclopedia," where that episode's guest celebrities took hammers to the set during the course of the episode. Guess that's one unique way of ending an episode.

I can't say this scared me as a kid, because I wasn't around when it was originally broadcast, but there was a version of the 1950s Beat The Clock that had, as part of its opening credits, an eerie montage of people laughing.  I presume it was supposed to represent people enjoying the show, but the way it was filmed kinda creeped me out, even though I didn't see it for the first time until I was an adult.  See for yourself:

Speaking of which, I was absolutely SCARED when on Nickelodeon's Make The Grade, the Fire Drill sound effect came on! Then, to make matters worse, whenever I thought that music was about to reach its end that a fire would start. It also made me afraid of fire drills in school for awhile.

I was also scared by the Scrabble Stoppers, Grand Game "Ten Thousand Dollars", and Jeopardy "Round Over" effects. While I was also scared of the Pathfinder effect, I had a dream of that game that a cartoon villain (like a dragon) attacked the player for a mistake! It scared me for another several years.

I was scared of those Scrabble stoppers. SCARED. And even the sound effect of the letter trying to fit in the word was scary for me too because of the tension.. that letter could be a stopper! I still watched the show because everything else was just awesome... and I couldn't wait for the Scrabble Sprint to come on because we all know there were no stoppers there. :) And, to a lesser extent, the strike buzzer from Family Feud, early in the CBS run.

-The time-up signal from "Legends"' Steps of Knowledge

Now I'm glad at least 2 of them have wound up [in pretty fair quality] on TVPMM.

We had a horrible buzzer in my school that used to scare me to death. If a fire drill was announced in the morning, I'd be able to think of nothing else until it was over.

Here, here!

And to think, I had a few classmates who used to taunt me every time that a fire drill was announced, and all I'd be able to do is hide my ears until the alarm was pulled and we did our drill.

One or two of these yokels also thought it might be cool to try to pull the fire alarm, thinking they'd be able to make me cry because the harsh buzzer would sound. (Yes, the teacher stopped them before they pulled the lever.)

Which gets me to wonder ... ever hear of a school arson just so the janitor would be forced to pull the alarm and the arsonist would get to revel in making his frightened classmate cry and s*** his pants? Yeah, he certainly would have succeeded in making someone cry, but he'd also succeed in disrupting the school day, putting lives in danger and earning a trip to juvenile hall (via the Juvenile Choo-Choo).

Without question, someone going "Off the Air" on Remote Control.  So much that I saw it once very early in the first season and never watched the show again until 6 or 7 years later when they showed the Brady Bunch episodes around the time the Brady Bunch movie came out.

Certain losing horns scared me as well, especially if they were over-the-top weird (Blackout, for one), and everything about Scrabble scared the crap out of me when it first started airing.

Sorry to bump the thread, but Southern Hospitality Week from Wheel of Fortune, along with Jeopardy's Back to School Week, brings back bad memories. Why? I was  7 at the time, and like all kids at that age, I watched Cartoon Network's afterschool action fest Toonami religiously. That same week Wheel did their Southern Hospitality Week, Toonami was doing a promotional event (I forget if they did this every year or not.) The main villain of the storyline (told through between-show interstitials) was this robotic-looking devil thing that SCARED THE MATH OUT OF ME. And it had some deep scary voice to boot. I freaked out so much I did not watch Toonami at all for the rest of that week and would change the channel immediately if a commercial for the event aired during other Cartoon Network hours. If I couldn't, I'd throw a pillow on myself and block my ears while singing loud nonsense to drown the villain's voice out (it would always come at the end of the ad.) So when Wheel aired that Monday, I didn't even pay attention to what was going on, I just sat in silence trying to get that demonic freak out of my head. My parents always wondered why I was so anxious every time we gathered to watch J! and Wheel that week. I never told them. Looking back on that guy now, he seems so stereotypical it's hard to believe he terrified me.

While it didn't so much scare me, "The $10,000 Pyramid" in 1973 traumatized me.

Price is Right debuted at 10:30am EST in Sept. 1972.  I watched the first 2 episodes before I began Kindergarten.  When I was home either sick or on spring break, when I put Channel 2 on (CBS New York...I grew up near Trenton, NJ), instead of Price is Right being on, it was this Pyramid game.  I had thought Price is Right had been canceled, not realizing that they moved the show to 3:30pm I guess in the afternoon for a time.

To this day, I am not a fan of any iteration of Pyramid.  I anchor it to this memory, but also it's a show that never did much for me really.  I realize I am in the very small minority...Most interesting topic to be sure.

It aired at 3 PM Eastern from 3/26/73 to 8/8/75. Hollywood's Talking followed to 6/22/73 then Match Game to 8/8/75 at the 3:30 spot.

I have several
1.The original time's up buzzer on Marc Summers' Double Dare.
2.The depressing piano cue played on early Wheel episodes whenever a fur coat or diamond ring was offered as a prize at the start of a round.
3.The triangle ring signaling time's up in the Golden Medley on Jim Lange's Name That Tune.
4.The cuckoo for an illegal clue in the front end game on the $25,000 Pyramid.
5.The bonus game music in Bumper Stumpers
6.The buzz in sound effect from Pitfall.
7.The original end of the round sound effect from the first season of Jeopardy!

I remember that as a 5-year-old I absolutely HATED the wrong number buzzer in Pathfinder. Whenever I saw they were about to play it, I would run into the other room and hide until my mother told me the game was over...

Without question, someone going "Off the Air" on Remote Control.  So much that I saw it once very early in the first season and never watched the show again until 6 or 7 years later when they showed the Brady Bunch episodes around the time the Brady Bunch movie came out.

Definitely the "Off The Air" sequence in Remote Control. I thought the losers were getting executed behind the wall. I think they showed the chairs back in position during the closing credits with skeletons in them. Nowadays I laugh at it because it was an awesome game show.

The Off the Air segments on Remote Control were my favorite in spite of only being 5-6 at the time.  I remember the chair on the right used to tip up into the wall, and the contestant in the middle would slide back and tear through a blue paper wall.  Also liked the chant of Na na na na!! Na na na na!! Hey hey hey!! Goodbye!! from the audience and the people dressed up like monsters that you'd see behind the center and left chair as the contestant would go off the air.

The Price Is Right losing horn didn't necessarily scare me, but I remember one time I had a dream when I was little (I believe roughly around 2007 or 2008 maybe) when I was in my family room with the TV and the losing horn randomly sounded.  For whatever reason, it was unusually loud and when I tried to cover my ears, something was preventing my hands from actually touching my ears.  As my hands got closer, whatever force it was kept getting stronger.

Don't ask me why this happened though.

This actually reminds me though that I just came up with another potential pricing game the other day called Price Pyramid, which would have an Egyptian pyramid theme and a top prize of $25,000.

I don't know if I had replied before, but since this has been bumped:

* The show where they broke lights and began damaging the set. Apparently (as I found out years later) I was 4 years old at the time and watching the last episode of the Bob Eubanks-hosted "Rhyme and Reason" on ABC.

* The dragon's roar on "Tic Tac Dough." Just was harsh and primitive. Today, not so scary, although I can see where it still might be jarring. I guess it's the "sudden death"-type ending.

For some reason, I still get a chill when they announce during the closing credits that one of the contestants was found to be ineligible and will not receive their prizes.

Found this example of an ineligible contestant playing her pricing game, and the announcement at the end of the show...

Then there was also:

The "time's up" bell from Face The Music (which screams "Fire drill!")
The sound effect from Play The Percentages if a 0 appears in the bonus round (later used on Break The Bank if "WRONG CODE" appears after a Bank Card is inserted)
Whenever Door #4 appears on All-New LMAD (with the camera zooming in and out).

But what about when a Secret Square is picked on Hollywood Squares (Marshall, Davidson, or Bergeron)?

The words "Face the Music" alone give me a chill because it reminds me of the scene in Kingpin where Ernie McCracken sets up Roy Munson to get jumped and have his hand shoved into a ball return.

I wasn't a kid at the time, but I remember a game show moment that was quite creepy.
On the syndicated Combs version of Family Feud, I can remember a few times during the Fast Money round, a low-voiced judge interrupting "We need a more specific answer for this next question".

Wow.
Just...wow.

Some of you must have had really bizarre childhoods.

I've always loved game shows, and there was nothing that "scared" or "frightened" me about them. Then again, none of the other "terrifying" things people claim scared them -- like movie production company logos and sounders -- scared me, either.

I've never really understood this stuff.

It was on 3 Strikes - when the camera would pan to the digit that the contestant mentions, and the Buzzer/"NO" appeared!

The snap zoom used showing the space the contestant chose where they thought the selected number went was a bit jarring.  It was to me back when I was a kid, and that was before the red "NO" graphic on the black background.   The old buzzer (from the late 70s/early 80s) was scary enough.  Though it wasn't quite as bad as the one used in the early episodes of Double Dare when time ran out on a physical challenge.

Having an abnormal reaction to certain sensations (sights, sounds, etc.) is a very common symptom of autistic spectrum disorders.

Fair enough. I guess it hadn't occurred to me there were so many affected by the condition within this group that this thread would run 6 pages. I guess I was expecting a much smaller percentage.

It's very interesting to learn how widespread the condition apparently is.

I just now recalled a specific incident from "Treasure Hunt" back in the early 1970s.  One of the skits involved a cat-burglar and seeing that on TV left me unnerved.  My poor Dad had to spend several minutes reassuring me that it was only an act, and not a real thief!

The Unknown Comic on "The Gong Show" always left me feeling rather uneasy too.  Not necessarily scared, but very uneasy.  Then again the entire program had that affect on me.

If I'm ever on the show, my family will NOT let me live it down if I don't mention this.

Many elements of Jeopardy!, and probably the show itself, really scared me as a kid.  Some really scary parts of it (to me) were:

The opening "swish" sound
Johnny Gilbert going "THIS! IS! JEOPARDY!"
Any time they play the tournament music (which included the first few notes in the theme, used in the first...six seasons I think.)
Trebek's moustache

Oddly enough, I used to be so scared of the Price is Right losing horns, especially when they were used on Card Sharks. I was just watching them lose it all, and then (cue horns LOUDLY). I got so startled by the disaster that I would always mute the TV whenever the Money Cards were played.

It's just a silly fear that I realized was unfounded, and hilarious.

Oddly enough, nothing. The only thing closest to it would be the Family Feud strike buzzers when I first saw the show when I was little. It startled me, but by the next viewing, I was fine.

I used to call the losing horns the "wah-wahs" and this made Liz laugh so hard. And as for Cliffhangers, I always enjoyed the people clapping to the song and would try to do so along with Liz whenever the game was played. Same as when people would thank others during the Big Wheel.

I actually liked the Dragon from Tic-Tac-Dough and always laughed when he appeared. He kinda reminded me of Bowser Koopa from the old Super Mario Bros. games. I was a Sonic fan more, but it was still funny.

The Daily Double "zaps" on Jeopardy. And, boy, did they ever! I don't mind them now.

For those who mention the DD zaps, ever notice that whenever watching earlier episodes of Jeopardy! that Alex would say "Answer" more often prior to the clue being read, and of course, "Answer" is still almost always said prior to the DD being revealed. "Answer" would usually be said during category bounces, and this practice ended around the Sushi Bar set era. And more often than not when that word was shouted, I thought that a Daily Double was about to be revealed. But the sound never bothered me like the end-of-round beeps did, unless during the rare occurrences that applause from a correct Daily Double drowned out the sound. I do remember turning the volume down when the "Less than a minute" warning was heard, and I was even afraid of the Merv Griffin Enterprises logo at the end of the show since I thought the logo animation would give me seizures, since the bright King World logo (especially the purple '80s version) followed afterwards. I would usually change the channel right after the closing sponsor plugs were read.  Around the time I was nine was when I stopped being scared of those, with the logo naturally going away and being replaced by the Columbia Tristar TV logo.

Ironically enough, the The Price is Right’s clangs and whoops and the firework graphics whenever someone won the jackpot on Wheel of Fortune weren’t something I was afraid of as a child. In fact they actually gave me life.

HOWEVER, I noticed that the buzzer that played if someone busted on the second line or the Big Bet of the Money Cards of the Jim Perry version of Card Sharks sounded like it came from the depths of hell — the NBC Klaxon. Add that to the fact that this was the first show that I watched outside of Price that used the losing horns, and I pretty much muted the TV whenever I detected that a player was going to bust.

No, but the first (2017) one did apologize for doing it and the one this year was a new member (which there is still somewhere in the rules an exception for that, if they add something to it).

Sounds like a fire alarm, doesn't it?  And I hated fire drills in school!

I used to hate fire drills. I lived in a group home for a while (about 10 months) before I moved to the downtown Aberdeen, SD area, and the group home I was in once had an early morning fire drill, which didn't scare the crap out of me, but it gave me the creeps for a while. Anyone know if there's a thread on favorite alarm sounds on game shows? If not, I'll start one.

Cliff Hangers. My mom still teases me about this today. I was so scared of the mountain climber falling off the mountain that I forced my mom to change the channel. I'd be okay if he stayed on the mountain, but I'd cry if he fell off. And every time The Price Is Right is on, my mom tells this story.

This is one of those timeless topics where I think an exception to the 30-day rule is warranted.  It's not like where somebody might be called upon to defend or explain an opinion they may no longer have (there may be people here who thought "Drew Carey sucks" in 2007 but by 2018 have grown to like him), which is my understanding of why the rule exists.  If a certain buzzer sound scared you when you were 5, it scared you when you were 5 regardless of whether you share the story in 2011, 2018 or 2025.

(Sorry to bump this thread, my friend Martha had replied to it. If you know of a newer thread on this topic, feel free to link me in its direction.)

Swayzak?! How did he scare you?! He wasn't scary at all to me; I had the biggest crush on him! You must have been terrified of Spawn. (TBH, Spawn isn't for kids.)

Honestly, Swayzak reminds me of a shameless copy of Emperor Zurg. There's a theory I have that Swayzak wasn't going to be like that, but only Jason DeMarco knows.

Anyway, those Temple Guards from Legends of the Hidden Temple freaked me out as a kid, as well as the heartbeat when the skull was returned to the king.
