ABC has set the premiere dates for this year's Summer Fun And Games block. Below is a Deadline article for the premiere dates for The $100,000 Pyramid, Holey Moley, The Hustler, Celebrity Family Feud, The Chase, Press Your Luck, To Tell The Truth, Card Sharks, and newcomer The Celebrity Dating Game.
https://deadline.com/2021/04/the-chase-the-hustler-renewed-abc-summer-schedule-bachelor-in-paradise-1234729455/
There are quite a few changes to the scheduling for the shows that include Wednesday being part of the Fun and Games block again, and it's no brainer that the network would pair The Celebrity Dating Game with the reality show The Bachelorette on Monday nights.
-
Not only is Wednesday back in terms of a night full of the Fun and Games, it's the better night between that and Sunday (IMO).
However, no Match Game, it looks like

No Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Season 2? But it was the highest rated of ABC's three new Thursday game shows from January-March! Why is it the only one of the three that isn't coming back?

Yeah that was rather surprising. However, it's not a shocker IMO. I think TPTB would prefer to have Celebrity Wheel air in a period where people would watch compared to a period that people might tend to do something else. Especially this summer. Winter is the best spot for it, right as (football is winding down and before college basketball heats up).
That, and Pat & Vanna's availability should explain the lack of CWOF this coming summer

Any number of reasons. The schedule doesn't work for production. Pat doesn't feel like it. They want to use it as winter filler. The demos weren't so great when you dig beneath the headline numbers. They only had so much need for summer.
Mix and match your favorites.

Nice to see The $100,000 Pyramid back after missing last summer. Interesting choice for one of the CDG cohosts since many associate his work with a bygone era that were huge radio hits but rarely heard in recent years (aka the Boomer version of Michael Buble). Given its lead-in, don't be surprised if there's a crossover episode with The Bachelorette. The Thursday lineup looks interesting since I really enjoyed Holey Moley more in its second season. Speaking of The Hustler, it's too bad that the short-lived 1979 NBC show Whodunnit? doesn't exist online except for some promos; it combined celebrities with civilian contestants and was hosted by the great Ed McMahon.
-
So far, only one game show has been officially cancelled: Don't. https://tvline.com/2021/04/07/dont-cancelled-abc-season-2/
-
Any number of reasons.
Or the most obvious reason, they done taping for this season and wanted to wait until season 39 to start taping new CWOF shows.
-
Nice to see $100,000 Pyramid back after not being on for any of the Fun and Games blocks last year or earlier this year.
-
Can't wait for Press Your Luck to come back
-
Some changes to the schedule according to this Deadline article (https://deadline.com/2021/04/abc-pushes-the-ultimate-surfer-premiere-card-sharks-press-your-luck-the-100000-pyramid-1234745809//). ABC has moved forward Press Your Luck and The $100,000 Pyramid from June 9 to May 26 and pushed back Card Sharks a week to June 16.
-
Great move. Until recently (even before last year), I think it would've been tough for any show to start within the last week before Memorial Day. That's usually due to a fleet of finales (24, DWTS, Idol, The Voice, Survivor, just to name several over the past 15 years). Survivor moved opposite American Idol as the latter's popularity dwindled, but before that no one was topping Tuesday & Wednesday.
With not much new content, it's a smart decision to have PYL and Pyramid start a couple weeks early during May sweeps. They're awesome, established shows regardless but it is refreshing to see both shows return in advance of the Memorial Day weekend

Well the season premieres of PYL and $100K Pyramid are competing directly against the season finales of NBC's "Chicago Wednesday" (Med/Fire/P.D.) dramas. That said, due to the production delays brought about by the pandemic, many shows will have their regular seasons extend into the summer this year. The NHL and NBA playoffs are running through mid-July, which means that there will be competition for sports that usually dies down early in June deeper into the season. Then of course comes the Olympics (if they happen) on NBC just after those playoffs end, so its definitely going to be a competitive summer like you normally don't see!
-
I’d wager every dime on the Olympics happening. Spectators? Maybe not, or not from outside the country. But there’s so much on the line I believe the find a way.
Many regular series (scripted that is) went with short orders due to the delayed production start. The networks generally aren’t going to invest in their high profile shows running much past traditional end points. Some normal 20/22 episode type shows were cut to the 16/18 range.
And it happens this year that Memorial Day is as late as it can be, so starting the week leading into it isn’t necessarily a huge jump compared to some years. :D

Well you also have to account for NBA Finals Preemptions on ABC if there is a NBA Finals game on a night where it should be a Summer Fun and Games night

This happens every year (usually on Sunday only). The NBA Finals schedule usually follows a nice pattern to help with travel between venues. Not much different than a typical rerun

A new space was added to the PYL board for the upcoming season, it's called "Take The Lead + One Spin"

Cool. How do you know this?

Thanks, TPIRfan for that link.
This is a good thing, in my honest opinion, especially given the fact that someone can win the game upon hitting Add-A-One (granted he or she doesn't land on a Whammy)

Thanks!!!!

ABC has released a press release (https://www.dgepress.com/abc/pressrelease/and-the-category-is-where-you-can-find-michael-strahan-and-the-hottest-a-list-stars-on-wednesday-nights/), of this year’s celebrity guests for The $100,000 Pyramid. Among the celebrities on Pyramid are some old favorites (Kathy Najimy, Kal Penn, Rosie O'Donnell, etc.) from previous seasons and some newbies (Ralph Maccio from The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai, Luke Kirby from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Alex Moffatt from Saturday Night Live, etc.).
-
I can't believe no one mentioned that the Beast is back on the Chase.
-
Speaking of The Chase, it is going by quicker now as ABC released this clip (https://www.dgepress.com/abc/video/500B3B14-8D19-5377-34F9-6F01C7740AAD/embed) from the Cash Builder round along with lowering the amount of it to $10,000 per correct answer.
Also, they have released some soundbites with the cast on their press site.

I hope for a revival of Hollywood Squares.
-
^The Hollywood Museum is doing a limited run of Hollywood Squares virtually as a fundraiser, with involvement from Peter Marshall, Tom Bergeron, and others. So if that has success it could possibly lead to a television revival, though I'm not sure what the rights situation is with the show. There's also been hip hop and country versions of the show in recent years on MTV/VH1 and CMT.
-
Given the success of all the greatest legendary gameshows within their revivals, I would be surprised if it doesn't happen (soon)

I could see ABC doing a revival of the MG/HS hour concept (especially given Buzzr's showing reruns of the original in last few years), only just airing them back to back vs. one show. I think it could work.
-
Match Game has quietly disappeared from ABC. Not that anyone would ever revive that steaming MGHS mess.

Oh no, that's a shame. Hoping not for good. And no, I didn't mean it as a single show like before, I meant separately. IE: Two completely different shows with no overlap. I wouldn't imagine anyone would dare try the combination now after how spectacularly it bombed back then.
-
According to The Futon Critic, Match Game's Season 5 finale was supposed to air November 4, 2020, but for unknown reasons, it was replaced at the last minute with a rerun of The Good Doctor's Season 4 premiere, and still has not aired to date. The panelists were Horatio Sanz, Marilu Henner, Michael Colter, Ali Wentworth, Justin Long, and Drea de Matteo.

I think it's unnecessary. I would be all for having a two-hour block with the Match Game & Hollywood Squares; I can see it being similar to having PYL & Pyramid back-to-back in that both are fitting and maybe nostalgic. What I'd see happening is that they air them back-to-back one year, and then they split them up the following season. With new programming annually, ABC doesn't typically stick to the same exact schedule year after year. There are / were some mainstays with CFF at the 8 PM spot and the Match Game later on that evening, 10 PM lately until its removal from the schedule.
As mentioned, Match Game has disappeared, but I do not think it's been cancelled as of this post. The demise of it is a possibility, but I think it may be related to the pandemic and running out of material. In my opinion, maybe Alec and company wanted to wait until things returned to normal before resuming everything. If that plays out, then maybe we'll get new content in the winter and then next summer. No mention of it is a tad bit surprising, however.
On the other hand, maybe ABC either got bored with it or that there are a ton of other programs that they'd rather focus on. I actually though Match Game was alright. If there's no room for it on the network, maybe NBC can pick it up. Personally, it's a better fit on NBC anyway for several reasons, including but not limited to the host, several of the celebrities, and the taping location. If that happens, and then 4th Hollywood Squares revival occurs, then you could see them paired up. With Password returning to NBC, you might start to see that network, in addition to ABC, adding & airing a ton of classics (in primetime). Man, imagine if they could get/revive NYSI!
Finally as for MGHS, as much as it was overrated, it is underrated (barely). I actually enjoyed the concept, but the structure was a complete mess. It could've been better, but it is what it is. I could write a book on MGHSH (well, maybe a blog post max). There have been & are worse shows, just saying; it was an okay risk

Honestly It just doesn't feel right to me when an SNL Cast member is on the Match Game panel which is why I like the Match Game on NBC idea since ABC has Match Game atm.

A...celebrity on a game show featuring celebrities is...a problem?

Wasn't Marilu Henner on the original Match Game run with Gene and the gang back in the 70s-80s?

She was (Match Game '78 episodes 1301 to 1305, and Match Game PM episode 125; all taped July 23, 1978)

I don't think it's that, it's that it sort of breaks tradition to have other network stars on like the CBS (and probably NBC before it) period didn't have. Different era granted from then to now, but that sounds like the argument being made.

Kinda off topic but the Good Doctor is a good show.

Battle of the Network Stars anyone?
That aside, it’s a silly thing. It’s 2021.

TBH, it's was just that back in the day. IMO, to extend the network vs. network thing beyond this topic, it's a stupid rule that someone calling a sporting event on one network can't do the same on another network, or someone that has a sitcom on one network can't have another show on another network. Maybe there's a reason why that's the case, but I guess I never understood the harm with such a dumb rule.
Despite earlier comments, I'm neutral (but lean) to the argument of Match Game working better on NBC than ABC. It has featured a lot of stars from Saturday Night Live, including present and former stars. Some could argue that the best spot would be, 10:00 PM EST before SNL (with local news in-between it).
That being said, it doesn't need to be on NBC. FWIW, MG has had a ton of stars from ABC sitcoms in addition to NBC shows and whatever else. It's been a success on ABC, but if that network wants to move on from it, I think NBC (or even CBS or FOX) would be more than happy to resume production
-
On that last point, I don’t believe there’s a proverbial snowball’s chance someone else picks it up. Retro game show revivals aren’t generally where those networks are. Name That Tune on Fox was more the music thing Fox has going. Look at the rest of their programming...it’s, well, not a match.
And if ABC has basically moved on, regardless of any episodes left to be burned off, that’s an indication of the declining returns. The other networks aren’t picking up a castoff like that.
-
Tonight’s Press Your Luck had a first for the current version. Where after surviving ten passed spins, a contestant ended up whamming out after the contestant to their left gave them back with $0. And in the bonus round, that contestant ended up becoming the first contestant on the revival to leave with nothing.
-
One thing I like about PYL is the camera shots of Elisabeth Banks, going to and from commercial breaks.
The Chase is a program that seems very interesting, and I like how Sara Haines hosts the show.
What happened to Supermarket Sweep?

It looks like ABC will be burning off the last few episodes of Season 5 that were taped nearly two years ago.
