What can I say, fantastic!

Joe really is following the example set by his predessors, by not stealing the limelight from the contestants.  He's also excellent at his job.

Leslie would be proud and it was also nice to see Bruce wish him well on This Morning.

WELCOME BACK ! ! !

The whole interview on This Morning was marvelous, I can see Joe doing this for years honestly years, and he has the right attitude.

The set is great, if a tad small, Im loving contenstants row for sure.

Very classy set, and the wobbly wheel been fixed!

Hmm...the first game says it's One Right Price, but it looks like Pick-A-Number ($1,075/$1,475/$1,875).  Did they change the name on that one?

If you have broadband and are a member of UKNova, the premiere is available as an MPEG.  I have under an hour left in my download.  Hopefully I can snag a video clip or two before the night is done.

Post by: hmtriplecrown on May 08, 2006, 11:57:54 PM
I've seen the premiere.  Outside of the first 90 seconds (the open), it was a waste of time.  I will give my opinions without spoiling the show.

First, the host.  He might be funny but his voice is more suited for cartoons than game shows.

The second game was downright insulting.  If CBS aired anything like that, their switchboard would light up in seconds.  I didn't take direct offense to it.  I know that wouldn't fly over here.

The third game...could they choose crappier expensive prizes, and they get to keep one?  Wow.

The Showcase Showdown was tolerable, even though their arrow was shaking and wobbling like crazy the entire time.

The Showcase round itself was seizure-inducing.  Again, it wouldn't fly over here because a parent or a watchdog group would call CBS on it.

I have no plans to download more of this in the future.  This is a truly pathetic and disappointing abomination of the show we mutually enjoy.

Gotta agree with Mike... when the best part of the show is the Showcase Freaking Showdown, something's up.

Mike covered all of the big points, but one more thing to add; in that second game, should any of you muster the courage to view it(and also happen to be a member of UKNova), you'll find that game as well has been cheapened significantly.

Mike might be putting up the ep. for your viewing "pleasure", so you all may get to see for yourselves. But don't say we didn't warn you.

I've seen some of the clips of the set and the prizes...It seems like a cross between Crowther and Warman, with Forsyth's modern style.
Bear in mind that OUR TPIR probably has the largest budget of all versions and that effects the prizes given away.
Of course though, I am eager to try watching it before final judgement. :-)

An 81 MB WMV of the premiere episode is available at my site, http://www.classicgameshows.com/video/index.html

As I said on my site, please remember that I'm just the messenger.

EDIT: Ok, in retrospect, it's not really as bad as I thought.

THE OK
The theme and set are nice. It fits the moderness that they are trying to convey, and it does kinda work.

Joe (ignoring his annoying voice) is not a bad host. He's new...he could get better with time.

The prizes are definatly cheaper than Bruce's, but with roughly HALF the budget, that's expected.

Peter Dickson, sounding great as usual.

The not-so OK
The asian-themed Plinko. WHY? I don't get it?

The "joke" prizes for Swap...I'm not sure this was meant to be a parody, but it came off as a giant joke that no one was really in on.

The showcase main prize. Huh?

It seems to me  that the right elements are there, but it's definatley missing the hominess of Crowther's version and the glamour of Bruce's version.

I'll try it again to see if it changes any...:-)

This looks sad, after seeing some good moments from the earlier UK series, this looks horrid.

I somehow think this revival isn't gonna last very long without some form of retooling.

Great one guys judging it on the first episode.

I much prefer episode two over one, Take 2 for example nice new game board, so was any number.

I just wish Americans wouldnt judge it to the US versions, Plinko was well horride im sure there was a few complaints to ofcom who will no doubt ignore it.

Its just panto inspired 2nd episode the showcase was won, and music clearly inspired by panto was played.

The set is modern yes and bright yes it suites Joe, the prizes are cheap because its daily with a budget of 25,000 now thats not much less than BPiR had weekly even with inflation!
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: bhvictory on May 09, 2006, 10:54:25 AM
Don't you reckon it's rather harsh to criticise the new series when it hasn't even been on a week.  And besides the US have changed their pricing game props a few times over the years so why shouldn't we.  Some other countries have rather strange pricing game props, Australia's castle design for Clock Game for instance, but it's fun.  I've said this before but I think Joe will go a long long way with this show.  He said on This Morning he hopes to do a Bob Barker and clock up over 30 years.  I hope he does, he's fantastic!

urbanpreppie0004 Asian themed plinko is because Joe is famous for his roles in Panto and he loves it, its obviously his suggestion.

You know, I think this program is getting a lot of flack that it doesn't deserve.  The host sounds, to put it bluntly, like someone is squeezing his balls in a vice, but he's ignorable, and aside from that, the show's actually pretty good.  I actually think the Plinko board looks better than Bruce's, and Take Two being modeled after a movie clapboard is a pretty neat idea.

There are a few things I don't like:  Pick-a-Pair looks to have been simplified when doing so is totally unnecessary (in the last seven seasons, I don't think it's been lost even ten times); "Joe's Bargain Bar" is a stupid name, and it's not like no one over there knows that there's supposed to be triple alliteration in the title; and 1 Right Price...well, isn't 1 Right Price.

I don't think I'd make it appointment television like I do the Barker version, and I don't think it's as good as Bruce's Price Is Right...but it's still a decent show.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: hmtriplecrown on May 09, 2006, 11:12:18 PM
I've seen a second episode.  Pick-a-Pair with *4* items?  Wow.

If I can get by Joe P.'s voice, the overall cheapness of the prizes and the show in multiple ways, the hyperspeed showcase range randomizer, and the offensive (again in multiple ways) Plinko, I could warm up to it.  It's not Bruce's PiR by any means but it could be an OK show with a one or two-year run on its own merits.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: Patchy on May 10, 2006, 05:34:46 AM
Thats the third episode in the run btw.

Also we have had 3 perfect shows in terms of pricing games, if thats not good what can be?
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: jaydlewis on May 10, 2006, 10:29:43 AM
I'd argue the point about "cheap" prizes.

BPiR, in the dozen (or so) eps I've seen, never had an IUFB cost more than 400.

The premiere Plinko gifts were actually quite a bit more than the US would use. (That TV/DVD thing would be about US$180)

And, I'm not trying to pick a fight, but the Showcase Rangefinder is the same Brucie had. Why bag on it?

As I said on Invision, where Bruce had an upscale feel, Joe has a club/disco atmosphere. It works for what it is, on it's own.

And, yes, Plinko, is un-PC.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: bhvictory on May 11, 2006, 05:49:26 AM
True, Joe does have a high voice but that doesn't make him less capable of hosting a gameshow than anyone else.  He's slowly but surely making the show his own in the same way Leslie/Bob/Bruce did.  In 1995 I remember it looked a little different with Bruce having watched Leslie for years but after a few episodes in many ways it was pretty much the same.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: Patchy on May 11, 2006, 07:43:23 AM
Im going to get a little flamed for this.

But the person I enjoyed most out of the UK hosts is really Bob Warman because he carries it so well for a news reader and its only what maybe 6-8 months max after Leslies was canned, of course he was going to get compaired to him, by people with satellite at that time.

It was 7 years before Brucie took over and wasnt so much in the lime light of Leslie, and its 5 years for Joe but with reruns on Challenge its not so easy for him.

That's very true.  After such hard acts to follow all Joe is doing is being himself so as not to be too much like his predessesors which is a good thing.  I think we'll be seeing a lot more of him for a long time to come.  Despite being best known for his zany comedy I find him totally credible as a presenter and I certainly hope we see more of him in this light.

I just watched the first episode over at Kluss' site.  Let me say this with all due respect to your site, Mike:  Don't EVER put me through that again;-)!

First of all, this guy Joe sounds like Benny Hill doing Truman Capote.  I honestly didn't think I was going to be able to endure him for the full episode.  I don't complain/make fun of the way people talk as a rule, but I can't ignore this!

Ummm, why do they call it One Right Price, when it clearly didn't PLAY like ORP?  YECCCH!

Then came Plinko.  Could they have been MORE culturally insensitive?  What the **** are they THINKING?  Offensive does not begin to describe this interpretation.

Switch?/Swap?  was tolerable...barely.  I stopped watching after that because I just couldn't stand anymore

I know some of you guys like this.  I'm glad, really I am.  I always look forward to ANY opportunity to see a foreign version of PRICE.  But this version tanks big time in my book.

Right then if you feel like that be glad Ive decided not to post any other episodes online because of peoples opinons, who dont get why its done like this!

That is all

Patchy, SOME of us do appreciate it. It's definately a different interpretation of TPIR...and different doesnt nessecarily mean bad, contrary to popular opinion with some of our members.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: AndyL on May 11, 2006, 07:52:43 PM
I hope you're not mad, Patchy.  Believe me when I said I'm grateful for foreign versions viewable online.  But this version....it just didn't WORK for me.  I honestly couldn't believe that I would have such a negative reaction.  Maybe you could help us understand better? :-)
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: PriceFanArmadillo on May 11, 2006, 08:03:51 PM
You have to keep in mind that the people with negative opinions are also going to be way more outspoken about it than those with positive opinions.  That's just the nature of message boards.

...with that said, I'm still not sure if I like this version much.  Hard to tell, since as an American, I'm certainly not the intended audience, so I guess it really doesn't matter.  From the episode I saw floating around the 'Net, I'd say it's not something I'd actively not watch...just that it's not worth the extra effort to track down and watch on a daily basis.  A solid 3 stars out of 5 from me.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: SteveGavazzi on May 11, 2006, 09:48:26 PM
You know, I said I think this show is getting a lot of undeserved flack...but I also don't get why certain people are so critical of the folks who don't like it.  This is very different from any version of the show we've seen before, including Bruce's Price Is Right, and I can certainly understand how it would rub some people the wrong way.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: bhvictory on May 12, 2006, 08:30:17 AM
As Joe was saying on This Morning the UK version has gone through many format changes, but at the end of the day it's been the same great programme for 22 years.  The prizes may be moderate but the show is still great and the contestants always seem very pleased to win.

Many years ago people thought Joe's voice was put on, but it's very much his own.  I don't have a problem with it, he can't help how his voice sounds.

After seeing the pics Patchy put up, I had a couple of questions.

1. In Danger Price & Take Two, I'm assuming that only some of the prizes can be won?

2. In Walk The Line, are the rules simply to guess whether each product is higher or lower than the one before it?

Thanks for the responses!
Title: Re: It begins today!

1) Danger Price yep the item that was the danger price isnt given away.
2) Yep if you get all the way to the end of the line you win.

I cant remeber about Take Two sorry ill get back to you when its replayed.

Are 1 Right Price and Pick a Number basically the exact same game there?
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: Patchy on May 13, 2006, 07:16:15 AM
Not at all pick an number is pick a number.

One right price is 3 prices and 2 a wrong you have to pick the correct full price.

Similar type of game yes.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: SteveGavazzi on May 13, 2006, 10:38:59 AM
Actually, if "1 Right Price's" prices keep using patterns like the one they used on the first episode...then yes, it's nothing more than Pick-a-Number.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: SteveGavazzi on May 18, 2006, 10:43:24 PM
You know, the weirdest thought struck me today:  "1 Right Price" is actually Balance Game '06.

I know that sounds weird...but think about it.  There's three price choices in increments of hundreds (instead of thousands), and they don't necessarily all have the same number of digits, so it isn't Pick-a-Number.  If you take away Balance Game's set and strip off all the gameplay elements that make it more confusing than it needs to be, this is what you're left with.
Title: Re: It begins today!

Let's see what I think of this version:

Joe Pasquale-- He actually did a lot better than I originally thought, even if he has a squeaky voice (which I've heard is his trademark). But he's not as good as Leslie or Bruce, though.  ;-)

Peter Dickson-- Great as always.

Set-- That's a very futuristic set. Plinko's is interesting...

Music-- Sigh. I mean, they're great pieces, but I was hoping they'd bring either Leslie's main theme and CoD or the TNPiR '94 theme and CoD music (as used on Bruce's show). Those two pieces are very well-done.

Format-- Same as Bruce's, so no complaints here (if only Doug Davidson's show used this format [or the format we Americans have loved over the past three decades], it could've been a winner).

Overall-- A-. A very superb version!  :-)

Although unlike Leslie & Bruce, TPiR is Joe's first venture into gameshow territory.  Leslie & Bruce had both done gameshows before they did TPiR so it's only natural they would be more relaxed with TPiR.  I think Joe is becoming more and more relaxed every week now he's settled in.
Title: Re: It begins today!
Post by: Billy on May 24, 2006, 04:04:01 PM
On a show a few days back, Joe told the audience to stop giggling whenever there was an IUFB, which is fair, really - if the show's played as a joke, then there's no point in watching.

Oh yeah, and we've recently seen what happens if you get 100 on the wheel. It follows the same format as the Warman version, where if you spin 100 in your bonus spin you get a car. A model replaces the 100 space with that of a car on the front. It's happened twice this week, both almost getting 100 again but just missing it.

Plinko should go back to its old BPiR amounts, I think. No one's going to keep a few hundred pounds when there's a chance of playing for a vehicle, and in this day and age, giving 2,000 away in daytime is easy as 1-2-3.

Leslie Crowther did TPiR at Central TV when Bob Warman was doing Central News so I'm pretty sure they will have run into each other at some point.

Leslie once guested on a show in the 60s called Sunday Night at the London Palladium which was hosted by Bruce.

And Joe met Leslie in 1993 when they both appeared at the Royal Variety Performance (This was almost a year after Leslie's accident in 1992).
