Title: The $100,000 Pyramid with Michael Strahan – Season Five
Post by: GameShowKid on May 26, 2021, 10:00:20 PM
Great to have the classic game show (and one of my favorites) back for another season. Can you believe it’s been two years? .

Congratulations to Ryan for winning $50K. That was a great clue for Types of Drivers: “A road raged one”.

And fantastic, down-to-the-last-second $50K win for Kiki, a great player. I always get more excited when a player has to come back to a passed subject to get the big win. Excellent clues for Sun Protection Items (“thick cream”, “zinc” – I would have thrown in “a shade”). She almost won an additional $100K (I said "a near-sighted man" while she was saying the correctly buzzed "near-sighted people" for People Who Wear Glasses. More great clues for Things With Lanes though: "a road" & "a bowling alley".

Hey, both Mystery “7” trips were won!

No comment on “Climax”.  :-)   And would you have accepted “Multiplication” for “Multiply”? I would have; it is a variation of the word and it also has t-i-p in sequence.

Leah was another great player, but I definitely could understand why she was buzzed for saying “Joey” for Parts of a Kangaroo. I thought of “hula” for Types of Hoops and “carried water” for Things in a Bucket.

Here's a cool fact, Ryan, the $50,000 winner in the first half of the show, is one of my coworkers!

After my appearance in Season 4, Ryan was inspired to try out for the show. When he let me know of his journey to the Winner's Circle, I helped coach him by using material from my copy of The $25,000 Pyramid board game, as well as the current version's home game. I had hoped he got on, and when I saw the first previews, I got very excited. I was even more excited to see him win big!

Once again, the word "bucket" foils another Pyramid player. This time, in the Winner's Circle.

The first Winner's Circle in the second half was the closest I've seen in years. What a great win from Kiki!

That clue to describe "climax" makes my description of "Horny" to Leslie Jones last season look quite tame.

The last Winner's Circle was painful to watch, as Kiki got disqualified for saying "Nearsighted People" for "People Who Wear Glasses." I would have said "Steve Urkel, Drew Carey, Sally Jessy Raphael, Benjamin Franklin, Buzzy Cohen, and some optometrists." Still, $62,500 plus the Mystery 7 is a good day's work.

Both games ended in tiebreakers, which was quite exciting to see.

Overall, this was a great way to bring Pyramid back after over a year's hiatus, and I can't wait to see more wins!

Crutches: "I help you move around when you break your leg."
Bucket: Coloniel Sander's Chicken, Jack and Jill's Water, beach sand, collected shells.
Pacific: "I'm the ocean on the west coast of the United States.
Drivers: Uber, Lyft, Doordash.
Cinnamon: I'm the spice associtated with apples, and part of a brand of toast cereal.
Sun: Coppertone, Banana Boat, Ray-Ban, umbrella, shady tree
Eggs: Scrambled, Over Easy, Hard Boiled.
Lanes: Highway, Bowling Alley, A bank's Drive thru.

Total cash won: $123,000. A good start, but there's always next time for a $100,000 win.

After almost 20 months, it is great to have Pyramid back on our screens. And it was also great to see your coworker on the show tonight goldroadfanatic too.

Here's what I would have said in the Winner's Circle.

From the Rosie O’Donnell and Nate Berkus games:

Things in a bank: money, tellers, safety deposit boxes
Things in a bucket: chicken, cleaning products, rainwater
Brands of Soap: Irish Spring, Zest, Old Spice
Things You Sleep with: your significant other, your cellphone, your pet.

From the Roy Wood Jr and Michael Kosta games:

Types of Trees: Sycamore, Magnolia, Elm
Sun Protection Items: Umbrella, Hat, Shades
Parts Of a School: auditorium, library, cafeteria
Things With Lanes: Bowling, road, a swimming pool

Great show indeed.  Nice atmosphere, and a lot of money won.

Sucks that it ended in painful loss toward what I thought would be a $100,000 win.  ["And that's why you always have the contestants receive the clues instead of giving them!" - Yours truly as a pathetic in the moment viewer].  Nonetheless, Kiki did great in the main game and in the winner's circle.  Felt at ease in a spot that is very difficult.  I would've said shades too.  Would've said hat, visor, shades, visor, hat, shades in that order in repeating it.  That, IMO would've done it for Kiki

I never understood why the rules are so strict on this show (always has been). There's really no reason multiplication shouldn't count for multiply. Is it because multiplication is a noun and multiply is a verb? Who cares, you certainly wouldn't accept it as a clue so why isn't it close enough for an answer.

The word Joey isn't kangaroo, would baby, man, human or woman be an illegal clue for something with "people"? If they're saying joey isn't "part" of a kangaroo, it's a separate kangaroo then fine but I think that's a dumb rule as well. I think a few seasons ago it was "woodwind instruments" and the guy said trombone and it was illegal because that's not a woodwind. It's not a quiz show, maybe it's not a good clue but it shouldn't be illegal.

It's the only game show I know of that errs on the side of having contestants lose as often as possible.

And I'm not sure the show needs to be as vulgar but perhaps that's being petty.

It's a word game...rules are specific and have been since it's inception.

I would have accepted "multiplication" for "multiply", but I can understand the decision of the current "powers that be". They were looking for that particular word. And it's not that tough to get: "You don't divide, add, or subtract, you..." Here the word "multiplication" doesn't fit or follow.

I think the kangaroo ruling was fair. A joey is not a part of a kangaroo. That's a leading clue that doesn't fit the subject.

By the way, I'm not a fan of the crude/vulgar content either.

Fair, but other word games (Password) seem to have clearer rules. With this one it's always "too close", considered an "exact" synonym or the popular "conveys the essence of the answer" which is fairly subjective. Frankly I think password is too lenient sometimes like when someone will essentially sing an entire versus of a song using portions of a single word clue. Inflection is allowed but at a certain point you're essentially using a multi word clue. I guess my point is password usually allows the borderline clues/answers (at least Super and P+) but Pyramid generally doesn't.

Meh.  I think the rules are fine.  Pyramid is worth more money for the players, but still, you have to earn it.  It can be confusing on Pyramid but the game is tough enough regardless unlike Password which isn't as strict.

I'm okay with it even though one's discretion can wreck a contestant's chance at victory.  It's still rather rare; whenever a clue is DQ'ed, more often than not that player was losing anyway.  Regardless of how unfair it might seem, the rules are the rules

On the June 2 episodes: To borrow a phrase from another game show, Chris Redd and Dr. Oz, you are the weakest links!

Given the domination of Michelle and Rachel in the first half of the first show, there was time for an explanation of the Winners’ Circle rules. What a great clue for Things in a Box, especially for a SNL alum: “Justin Timberlake’s private parts”. I immediately said “The Titanic” for Things That Sink. Congrats to Michelle on the $50K win, and she passed and came back to win.

And more congrats to Brad; FANTASTIC clue for Things That Are Hungry: “A board game hippo”. $50K for you!

Did Oprah pay for all of the name mentions in the second half hour?

And Lindsey: You get $50K (and a trip to St. Lucia)! Very good clues for Types of News: “Daily” & “The Nightly”. All I could think of before they got it was “Bad”.

I immediately thought of “stocks" and "baseball cards" for Things That Are Traded.

Lotion: Gold Bond, Cetaphil, Vaseline, Jergens
Sink: Rotten egg, Quicksand, Torpedoed boat, Titanic
Office: Desks, Computers, Water cooler, Lobby
Butcher: "I cut meat at the supermarket or meat market".
Flowers: Rose, Daisy, Tulip, Dandelion
Gymnastics: Balance beam, Pommel horse, Floor exercises, Parallel bars
Chicken: Fried, Shake n' Bake, Cacciatore, Cordon Bleu
Donate: Transplanted organ, Charity money, Goodwill clothing, Christmas toys

Total cash won: $159,500. Season total: $282,500. Still waiting for a $100,000 win. Not happy right now.
I would like to know the logic and thought process that went into the 1st half of the 2nd game with Oprah.
Dr. Oz and Chris should never come back.

Rachel Dratch is insanely good, while Chris Redd and Dr. Oz were just terrible at the game and should not be asked back. And also, I believe that Oprah Winfrey as the first clue in every category in the second game's first half was a first for Pyramid.

What I would have said in the Winner’s Circle in the Rachel Dratch vs Chris Redd games:

Lotion Brands: Jurgens, Gold Bond, Aveeno
Things in a box: pizza, personal belongings, holiday presents
Parts of An Office: the conference room, the receptionist’s section, the breakroom
Things That Are Hungry: board game hippos, yourself, a fussy baby

What I would have said in the Winner’s Circle in the Dr. Oz vs Daphne Oz games:

Types of Flowers: daisy, bluebonnet, sunflower
Types of News: local, podcasts, nightly
The Simpsons characters: Edna Krabappel, Ned Flanders, Bart
Things You Donate: money, clothes, toys

I didn't think Dr. Oz was that bad, but certainly not one of the better players. He was a little slow but his clues weren't all that bad. Chris Redd on the other hand, was "not ready for primetime" as they say. I'm not sure the "Moan" clue that Strahan was alluding to would have helped, probably just added more confusion. Also interesting that they accepted "argument" for "arguing" but not "juggling" for "juggler". Though argument was accepted after many many clues and guesses.

On the July 16th episode: Congratulations to Nathan for becoming the first $150,000 winner of the season. What a fantastic, surprising, and suspenseful $100K win at the end!

And what a great first half-hour. Two great players. Two 21-21 ties. (Although, as a judge, I’m currently thinking I would have cuckooed the “three names” clue given for Sarah Jessica Parker. I didn’t think that giving the number of words in a correct response was allowed.)

I also did not expect such a challenging subject for $50K (and not even $100K): Things That Are Diverse. Great clues from Carson (after reasonably pausing to think): “College campus populations” & “The United Nations”, but definite props to Alex Moffat for coming up with the important word. Now that was a well-earned win! I thought of “movie corn” for Things You Pop. Nice one with “Shakespeare’s Globe” for Types of Theaters.

Under the pressure of time, the first thing that came to mind for Things You Pull Off was “a scab”. I know; not the best clue. Any excellent ones out there?

Good clue for Things That Are Weak: “an old man’s arms”. May I add “watered-down tea”? And the key words were all that were needed in the final Winner's Circle round: "water" in Water Sports (hmmm....) and "makeup" for People Who Wear Makeup (understandable - I said "clowns").

(And I agree: Creepy is a tough word to get.)

Well. Quite a good day today.  Both Mystery 7s of the hour were won, as well as over $200,000.

Two ties happened in tonight's first game, with Michael claiming that it was the first time in the current version of Pyramid that came down to the clock to break the tie in the main game.

Nathan also did extraordinarily well in the second game with the two cast members from the recently concluded FX drama Pose by taking home $150,000 and a trip to Antigua.

From the Alex Moffat vs. Michelle Collins games:

Things at a Gym: dumbbells, treadmills, trainers
Types of Theaters: movie, broadway, improv
Things a Dentist uses: drill, toothbrush, needles
Things you tackle: a football player, a hard assignment at school, a home improvement project

From the Dominique Jackson vs. Indya Moore games:

Things you put on Pancakes: slices of fruit, syrup, butter
Things that are weak: an elderly person’s arm, an abandoned puppy, an injured bird
Fast Food Restaurants: Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Sonic
People who wear Makeup: models, drag queens, actors

Foot: Toes, Heel, Nails, Corn, Callous
Pop: Balloon, Pimple, Champagne Cork, Orville Redenbacher's Corn
Soup: Chicken Noodle, Vegetable, Minestrone, Alphabet
Dentist: His drill, His pliers, His cavity filler
Alligator: "I'm the reptile that lives in Florida", "You can find me in a swamp or bayou".
Pancakes: Maple Syrup, Butter, Blueberries
Fast Food: McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Arby's
Makeup: Actors, Clowns, Drag Queens, Mimes

Total cash won: $207,500; Season Total: $490,000
Two 21-21 Ties in the same half hour. Its a shame that there was NO cash bonus for it.
First $100,000 win, and first $150,000 winner.
I would have said "Reader's _____" for "Digest".
"What A Dentist Uses" was the same category that nailed Earl Holliman.
"People Who Wear Makeup" was the same category that nailed Henry Polic.

On the June 23rd episode: Laura was a great player. A shame about Things With Arrows. My first thought was “a quiver”, and if needed I had other clues. For Things With Salt, I came up with “a pretzel” and “the ocean” right away.

“I’m a famous woman and I have a TV show”. Judge Judy?? Wow!

Congratulations to Greg on his $50K win (and his Mystery 7 win). I got worried after he spent so much time on What an Aisle Might Say. Things That Are Sticky? How about “Scotch tape”? And I’m old school: I thought of "Cher" right away for People With Long Hair.

Speaking of old school: Did you notice that after Greg’s Winner’s Circle win the dollar amounts for each subject were left in the displays? I liked seeing that. Old school! 😊

Great get by Jack in the second half-hour maingame with “strict”.

I don’t know if my partner would have gotten Instant Things with my clue of “Sanka coffee”. A dated reference. Any excellent ones out there? “Carnation’s breakfast”? (Who remembers the commercials? 😊 )  And I would have said “a McDonald’s SIGN” for Things With Arches, not just “McDonald’s”. But kudos for coming up with “Saint Louis” as well.

The contestant just ran out of time on Things People Miss. Adding "faraway" to her clues ("loved ones") was a good idea, and Michael's "deceased" was also quite good. I came up with "a bowling ball" for Things in an Alley, and "displayed books" for Things on Shelves. Great clues from the contestant for those ("a stray cat", "a garbage can", "books", and something else I couldn't understand).

If this has been talked about before please forgive me.

Since Pyramid has come back  how come none of the Celbs have given the clues during the bonus round? Are they not as smart as the celbs in the past?

During the Dick Clark version, about 95 % of the celbs gave the clues.

I think Rosie O'Donnell gave the clues in a Season 1 Winner's Circle, during that season's finale, but for the vast majority of them, the contestants have given the clues.

My guess is that the contestants spend a lot more time preparing for the game, and in order for them to have a good shot at winning $50,000 or $100,000, it's to their advantage to give clues to the celebrity who likely isn't as prepared. At least on my appearance two years ago, we contestants always gave clues in our run-throughs of the Winner's Circle.

Back then, when the game was on the air on a more frequent basis and there were more seasoned celebrity game players (like Nipsey Russell, Billy Crystal, Betty White, Henry Polic II, to name a few), it made sense to let the celebrities give most of the time. Today, not so much.

It was an absolute dream come true for me. I was on the Season 4 premiere with Rosie O'Donnell and Leslie Jones, which aired on June 9, 2019. I won $50,000 and the Mystery 7, a Disney Cruise to the Bahamas. I chronicled my appearance in the Season 4 thread (http://www.golden-road.net/index.php/topic,30170.msg468119.html#msg468119), and a clip of my Winner's Circle is available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B83PpMSk9m0).

Thanks again for sharing :)

On the June 30th episode: No $100K tries this evening and only one $50K win. And I really can do without all of the intentionally suggestive subjects/categories in the maingame.

Nevertheless I liked Dante. He was a very good player with a great personality. Two quick exclamations from me of “Yes! Five Thousand!” and “Yes!” during his Winner’s Circle Round after the two quick gets of Things You Deserve (great clues there) and Things You Bounce. But would Michael Strahan’s clue of “Santa’s list” for Things That Are Naughty have been buzzed? Is it leading? It’s not the list itself that is naughty. I would have said “Santa’s listed children”. [Perhaps a related note: I remember seeing Stuart Pankin's clue of "a panty dorm" being buzzed for Things That Are Raided. Dick Clark asked Pankin something like "What is a panty dorm?" :-))

Congratulations to Melissa on her $50K win. She was another very good player. Excellent clue for “danger”: Rodney (blank)field. And in her Winner’s Circle round: Superb clues for Things That Put You To Sleep (“soft music”, “melatonin”) and Types of Tubes (“test ones”, “inner ones”) even before her clincher, “a scientist’s test ones”. And she really went old school with “Vanna White’s letters” for Things That Turn. It’s been decades, but it worked.

For “plus”??: Not minus but…

How about “a licked envelope” for Things That Are Sealed? And I immediately thought of “the third pig’s house” for Things Made Of Bricks and “a woman’s period” for Things That Are Monthly. If needed I would have also mentioned the bills. Things With A Zipper? How about "a man's fly"?

Bricks: Third pigs house, Chimney, Oz's yellow road
Boxers: Mohammad Ali, George Foreman, Mike Tyson
Monthly: Rent, Bills, Magazines

Total cash won: $81,500 Season Total:$652,000
2nd straight show with the $100,000 not played for, try again next time.
Lorraine and Paige are likely to not return.
For "plus", all Rosie had to do was say, "opposite minus"
Rosie couldn't get it together in the 2nd half

It was "Things You Pick". I immediately thought of "Your nose" and "Your Teeth".

My thoughts on the July 7th episode: Once again, no $100,000 tries tonight. And remember out there, you can’t spell socialist without cialis. 😊

For “ticks”: Not fleas, but…

I think that Winner’s Circle round #1 was the worst one so far this season. I first thought of “your nose” for Things You Pick and “Tony’s Flakes” for Things That Are Frosted, but I think it would have been better for me to have added “the Tiger” to that clue like Michael Strahan did. I also came up with “Superman” for Things Made of Steel.

Greg and Sal were on fire in that second maingame! And it carried over into his Winner’s Circle round. Congratulations on his $50K win. He gave the classic, excellent clue for Things That Wobble: “a weeble”, and another fantastic clue for Things That Are Out: “A three strike batter”.

What a perfect way to start the second half-hour! Too bad there’s not a bonus in this iteration of Pyramid for someone in the case of a 21-21 tie.

How about “an audience’s hands” for Things That Clap? And great clues were given for Things You Regret ("a blind date", "getting too drunk", and "a one-night stand"); the contestant had a lot of time for that one fortunately.

Castingpyrmid.com anyone? :-)

I guess nobody wanted the $100,000 that dam badly.

Why was "Clap" buzzed exactly?

I agree with that. And "Clap" wasn't buzzed for an illegal clue (time ran out there), but Types of Bells was. The celebrity said "balls" and the contestant said "close". Buzz!!

And thanks for reminding me :) : The first clue I came up with for Things On a Farm? "Old MacDonald".

On the July 21 episode: We got a $100,000 try! It has been a while.

Pretty dramatic first maingame. A team got hung up on “Go” (How about “not stop, but…).  And how do we break a tie? Fisticuffs! 😊 Very funny Dulce.

And interesting how Dulce spent quite a bit of time on Body Parts, but got Native American Tribes (Indian) right away. And what a fantastic clue from Strahan for Things That Crash: “The 1929 Stock Market”. No pressure on him though! 😊

Congratulations to Liz on her $50K win. Good thinking adding “stored” to “your gym bag” for Things In A Locker and “barking” to “his mouth” for Parts of a Dog.

Things with a Core? I did think of “an apple” and “the earth” but not “your abs” or “the earth’s middle”. And how about “Alexander The Great’s World” for Things You Conquer? Kudos to Kathy Najimy for getting People Who Ride a Bicycle so quickly. I came up with “Lance Armstrong” for that one. And for Things That Are Padded I would have added (pause for rhythm) "an insane person's cell". :-)

Side Dishes! Arghh!!! Great clues there regardless. Brennan was an excellent player.

I still don't understand the tiebreaker, its very confusing.
1 "Mystery 7" won.

On the July 28th episode: Two male contestants to start. Two female contestants to end. Both Mystery 7 trips won. A $100,000 try.  Unusual. 😊

Very nice $50K win for Matty. And a fantastic clue for Things You Swing to go along with “a baseball bat”: “your square dance partner”. I thought of “a pendulum”.

Another nice $50K win for Chris. With his speed in the Winner’s Circle, I could hardly think of clues during the round. Gotta give props to Rachel Dratch.

“A kid can be a spoiled…”  brat.

I would have said “an OPEN door” right away for Things You Close, along with “a business deal” if needed. Types of Clubs was a bit of a challenge for me; “a private country one” was a great clue there. And I think more variety was needed in the contestant’s list of Famous People (Celebrities); maybe “Michael Strahan”, “George Clooney”, “Brad Pitt”, “Paris Hilton”?

Coming to my mind immediately for Things That Are Romantic were "a candlelight dinner" and "a Beethoven symphony". And I know, not the best clues, but how about adding “radio ones” and “micro ones” for Types of Waves, and “your position” for Things You Defend? Strahan’s "tidal ones" and “your girlfriend’s honor” were excellent.

On the August 11th episode: A $50K win and a $100K try! Not too bad. But what was the subject of the Mystery 7 in the second half-hour? I guess we’ll never know.

I was also thinking football when Things You Block came up. Any excellent clues out there?  “An overfilled basketball” came to mind for Things You Deflate.

Congrats to Rich on his Mystery 7 win. I thought of “All your secrets” and “ruined film” for Things That Are Exposed. And how about “quartet members” for Things There Are Four Of?

I’ve seen more difficult pyramids, but congratulations to Andy on his $50K win. He should have had $150K total though! He gave some fantastic clues for Things You Make A Wish On ("a falling star", "a fountain coin", "a genie's lamp") and they had so much time (over 30 seconds)!! Maybe if he went the "birthday candle" route earlier; I did. I also wonder if "Pinocchio's star" would have done it.

Things there are four of: Marx Brothers, Beatles, seasons, square sides, rectangle sides
Things you block: Football players, pop-up ads, hockey shots, tic tac toe players, a Whew! charger
Things that are exposed: A Playboy Bunny's body, film pictures, an unsecure account
Things you deflate: An overheated economy, an overstuffed balloon, an ego
Things you make a wish on: A Disney star, a genie's lamp, a New Year's resolution, a birthday cake and candles, the Trevi fountain

That Mystery 7 in game two that got Tess missed with just five out of seven involved alphanumeric combinations, although it was April 15 that got to her for not knowing tax filing day. At least she did better than the Turtle Wax/Rice A Roni that her mom got back in 1976.

Some strict rulings here. I can probably see "bare breasts", it's redundant/synonym. Don't get seventies or nineties being illegal for eighties. Tessitore completely blew the last WC, the only things "a falling star" and "a genie" have in common are wishing. Though the other guy probably stayed on "genie" for too long, should've went back to the star. I'd say "Beatles members" rather than just "Beatles". "Tom Brady's football" for deflated if they're a football fan.

On the August 18th episode: Well, at least we got a $100K try. And both trips offered were won.

Congratulations to Eric on his $50K win. I was surprised that he and Ginger Zee spent more time getting Other Names for Marijuana than Things That Are Natural.

Along with “Carrot Top’s hair”, I might have said “breakfast juice” or just “a carrot” for Things That Are Orange. And how about “1950s hair” or “John Travolta’s hair” for Greasy Things? “Pout” immediately came to mind for Things You Do With Your Lips.

I was quite impressed with how well Alesandra and Dascha did with the middle school vocabulary words in the second maingame: hibernate, equator, binoculars, utensil, blindfold, turbulence, ambidextrous.

The second half hour was a struggle to watch. I have certainly seen far better celebrity players. Was one of the housewives playing "Jeopardy!" in her mind?? She phrased her first responses in question form. How about 13-12 for a final maingame score? How about it again?? I was astonished seeing Simon actually win his Mystery 7 trip.

I would have used simpler clues like “white”, “whole wheat”, “pumpernickel”, and “rye” right away for Types of Bread; I saw no need for “ones” to be added this time. And especially with the show airing on ABC, I thought of “Disney Dwarves” immediately for Things There Are Seven Of.

I was not astonished seeing just $4500 won in the last Winner’s Circle round. I instantly came up with "a long rose" for Things With Stems, and "your front door" and "a safe" for Things You Lock. Any excellent clues out there? And Things in December was a bit of a challenge. Would "thirty-one days" be buzzed?

On the August 25th episode: Not too bad. A $50K win. A Mystery 7 win. A $100K try. But, did they actually bleep the word “penis”? 😊

Some great clues given in the first (and winning) Winner’s Circle round, and great thinking from the celebrity. I would have added “unwanted” right away to “old documents” for Things You Shred. And how about “a punctured tire” for Things That Are Flat?

Would “Onward Christian…” have helped with “soldiers”?

Things That Are Aged? A tough one. I came up with “Tabasco sauce”. Maybe “stored Tabasco sauce” or “stored cheese”? “Sports Illustrated” was fantastic for Magazines. It has been a while since the $1000 subject has been passed.

In the third maingame: Hmmm…. should the clue of “YOU’re welcome” for “Thank YOU” have been cuckooed?

I feel a bit bad for Brandon. He gave very good clues in his first Winner’s Circle round, including several correct countries for Things in South America, “an alarm clock” and “rising sun” for Things That Wake You Up, and “my (intimate) diary” for Personal Things (Private). His celebrity partner did not come through. I immediately thought of “Chase” and “Wells Fargo” for Types of Banks.

What do you know? The first definition of "rinse" is "to wash (something) with clean water...". I probably would have been buzzed on Things You Rinse as well. And oh! NOW I think of "stained glass (ones)" for Types of Windows. :-)

I honestly thought they bleeped "Dick" (for the clue to Clark), even though the context was clearly the shortened name for Richard. I've been on several newsgroups and they will censor (or "hold for moderation") if you use the word dick, even if you're using it as the man's name.

As far as the Winner's Circle:

* "Magazines" – I wonder if the receiver got thrown off with the clue "People" (since you obviously couldn't say People Magazine), but then you say "Time," "Newsweek," "Sports Illustrated," etc., and then the little light bulb might have gone off.

* "Things In South America" – beautiful women, Colombian coffee, the Amazon rainforest, Rio De Janerio, summertime Christmases (because remember that it's early summer in December that far south) ... a lot of other possibilities than just names of countries. (Of course, that's in hindsight.)

* "Banks" – Uncle Phil's family, piggy, Wells Fargo, Chase-Manhattan, your local Farmer's Savings, river ... several other possibilities.

I just watched that segment again. The category was First Names of Famous Game Show Hosts and "Dick" was the last one. The contestant said "Clark" and then "penis", which was bleeped. I really don't understand why; it's the biological name of a body part.

On the September 1st episode: Another $100K try. Nice.

First Winner’s Circle round: I agree with Strahan: “Those weren’t easy.” I might have emphasized the last “A” in my clues for States That End With “A”. For Things In A Pipe “Alaskan oil” was good; I thought of “Santa’s tobacco”. And I’m old school; my first clue for Famous Women Named Kate was “Hepburn”. “Middleton” was much better.

I liked the timing of Strahan's mentioning that the Mystery 7 was still in play during the second maingame. Dick Clark did that often in such a situation. And I can’t believe an experienced player like Kathy Najimy said “not a bicycle” for “A Tricycle”. Definite cuckoo.

How about “a piggy bank” along with “a slot machine” for Things You Put Coins Into? And I also thought of “Hubbard” to go along with “Theresa” for Famous Mothers. Things That Are Precious? “Gems” came to my mind as well, as did “memories” and “a baby”.

Speaking of old school, I was reminded of Bill Cullen as the second half-hour began. The celebrities were already seated when introduced. Good to see Gilbert Gottfried again; it has been a while for me.

A $50K win! Great clues for Things In A Basket; I added “carried eggs”. But Types of Sleep as an actual subject?

I would not have started off the clues with "your" for Office Supplies. I think that threw Gottfried off right away. Generic ones like "staples", "copy paper" and "printer ink" would have worked better. How about "Madrid" for Things In Spain and "Daffy Donald Howard" (yes, that quickly) for Famous Ducks? And I had to think a bit for Famous Couples (Duos); "Sonny and Cher" was great; my "Martin and Lewis" was not.

Any superb clues out there? :)

A heartbreaker to end the first half maingame with Kathy giving an illegal clue on the first word in the Mystery 7 set.

Things you put coins into- piggy bank, vending machine, slot machine, laundromat washing machine
Famous mothers: Teresa, Goose, Hubbard, Queen Elizabeth, Kris Jenner
Things in a pipe- Alaskan oil, tobacco, marijuana, crack, a clog
Things in Spain- Madrid, Barcelona, Running of the Bulls, paella
Famous couples (duos): Sonny and Cher, Jay-Z and Beyonce, Barack and Michelle Obama, Donny and Marie, Lucy and Ricky, Penn and Teller, Siskel and Ebert

On the September 15th episode: A $50K win! A $100K try! Both Mystery 7 trips won! Not too bad.

Gyrate. Tough word.

Excellent clues for the $50K win, including “linoleum floors” and “mosaics” for Things With Tiles, “Dorothy’s sky” and “gay pride flags”, and “a dunce” (with lots of head nodding) for People Who Wear Hats. Mario Cantone’s first Winner’s Circle triumph!

Wow. Getting the names of celebrities when all that’s needed is the last name is much easier. 😊

As it should be, the actual $100K pyramid was tougher. Good thinking to say “sexy, yummy underpants” along with just “food” for Things That Are Edible. I immediately came up with “your wares” for Things You Display. Things You Put Out was the stopper. I liked Strahan’s “a pastured horse”. OHHHHHH! Now I think of “an unwanted fire”! Dang! Too late.

Nice old school references today: Hugh Downs and Barbara Walters for “20/20”, and Maryann and… for “Ginger”. And again, “penis” was bleeped.

Things With Extensions? How about “a short electrical cord”? Any other good clues out there (I did like "overdue paper deadlines")? And how about for Things You Spy On? Types of Questions? (Actual questions are apparently not allowed.)  Once again, after some thought: "multiple choice", "true/false", "short answer".

I thought of “Jerry Seinfeld’s comedy” for Things You Do Standing Up, but “a man’s urination” and “paddle boarding” were maybe a little bit better. And I would have said "a butterfly's wings" and "a lovestruck" or "nervous heart" for Things That Flutter.

Things with extensions: a deadline, your term paper, your thinning hair
Things you display: your diploma,
Things you put out: A fire, a cigarette, a plate of hors d'oeurves
Things you spy on: Your neighbors, the enemy,
Types of questions: Multiple choice, true or false, rhetorical, riddles
Things you do standing up: Wait in line, a comedy act, give a speech, salute the flag
