Title: Teddy's TPIR: Episode 28/Flashback to 1998
Post by: Teddy on January 18, 2020, 07:37:42 PM
This may be the first episode of the New Year, but we're turning the clock back 22 years for this edition of my Price is Right series. Yes, we're going to play the exact same games that were played on an episode from 1998, and I will give you further assistance by telling you that the lineup for said episode will consist entirely of games that are still being played on the show today (meaning no Penny Ante, Super Ball, Fortune Hunter or games of that sort). It may be an episode from Season 26 or 27, and I've sent two links for your consideration, thanks to Scorpz:

http://tpirstats.com/Calendars/Season_26_games.html
http://tpirstats.com/Calendars/Season_27_games.html

Which brings us to a new variant of the TPG: Instead of the games that will be played, I would like you to provide the airdate of the show that you think will be reenacted here. The player who is nearest to the actual date without going later will get a First Four pass to the next episode, but if anyone guesses the exact date, a $1,000 bonus will be awarded to them as well.

So who's in for this retro-themed show?

One down, eight to go...and even after I've made the nine-player minimum, I'd still like a few more extra players to join in.

No, but no posts having been made outside of this section means that you're ineligible. Meaning any first four passes should be ignored.

On second thought, maybe I should rescind Clara26's First Four pass if she had only made one post outside this section. No worries, though, because I still have the nine players I need to get the show going.

Also, the deadline to sign up will be extended to tomorrow evening, as I have a doctor's appointment in the morning. Show will start once I return from said appointment. Let's get some more players in, please!

I'm back, and ready to set this time machine back to '98. Here we go...

(Walking 1976)

GEORGE GRAY: Here it comes! From the famous Bob Barker Studio in Hollywood, it's The Price is Right!

wpghi5, come on down!
Plinkoman, come on down!
JayC, come on down!
And Hag, come on down!

You are the first four contestants on The Price is Right!

(TPIR Theme 1972)

And now, here's your host, Teddy!

(enters from Door #2, and takes microphone from Rachel)

Hello, welcome to the show! Rachel Reynolds is here, everybody! And right over there, say hi to my friend George Gray!

GEORGE: Good morning, Teddy, and good morning, Rachel. It's going to be a great day. Hi, Mama Mai!

I am so glad you tuned in today because we're going back in time to 1998, and we're going to repeat a lineup that was used on a show from that year. So hold on, it's going to be a fun ride. Let's get it started with the first prize up for bids today on The Price is Right!

GEORGE: Well, here's something we never had back in 1998: It's a male model on a trampoline! (Door #2 opens with James bouncing around on it) (lite-rock variant of Fortune Hunter cue) (applause) Have fun bouncing up and down on this 14-foot SkyBound Stratos trampoline, which has a full safety net enclosure system.

James O'Halloran, everybody! There he is!

JAMES: Hey, Teddy! Good morning, everybody!

The rules are the same as they were back in '98: If you're the one who is nearest to the actual retail price without going over, we will give it to you.

DING!

...$1,000 from JayC...

DING!

...and $1,300 from Hag.

DING!

And the actual retail price of that trampoline is: $800. Plinkoman, you win!

DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING!

(Walking 1976)

(cheers and applause)

Plinkoman, I'm so glad to have you up on stage with me that I have a prize you will love. George, what is it?

GEORGE: It's a new SUV! (Rachel models it behind Door #3) (Car Slide) (cheers and applause) It's the 2020 Mazda CX-5 Sport, featuring a 2.5-liter engine, 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. This is the Mazda CX-5, a prize worth $26,020!

In order to win that Mazda, you just need to spell out the word car in our first game, called Spelling Bee! There are 11 C's, 11 A's and 6 R's. All it takes is one of each to win. However, if you're lucky enough to get one of the two cards that say CAR, you win automatically. Now, to start the game, I will let you have two cards for free. Which two do you want?

(two numbers from 1 to 30, please)

So 29 and 13 are yours. Now, I will give you a chance to earn three cards, along with these three small prizes, where James is standing by. What are they, George?

(1994 SP Cue)

GEORGE: Well, here we go. First up, listen to the many sounds of nature with this white sound machine. Then, with the help of your smartphone, you can get your car in and out with this smart garage opener. And finally, get the dust out of very small crevices with this handheld vacuum cleaner.

In order to earn a card, you just have to be within $10 of each prize. To speed the game up, give me all three guesses.
Title: Re: Teddy's TPIR: Episode 28/Flashback to 1998

$32 for the sound machine.
$52 for the garage door opener.
$25 for the vacuum.
Title: Re: Teddy's TPIR: Episode 28/Flashback to 1998
Post by: Teddy on January 25, 2020, 07:17:24 PM
And now that your three guesses have been made, let's start with the sound machine. You said it was $32; how much is it?

BUZZ!

Oh, it was only $20, so you don't get a card. Next, you said the garage door opener was $52; what's the price of that?

DING!

$50, so you get one more card. Let's make it two more with the vacuum. You said it was $25, and it is...

BUZZ!

...$36, and you've ended up with just one pick, but it may be enough for you to win. What's your number?

(again, from 1 to 30)

11 you want, and 11 you get. I was going to ask if you were going to take the $3,000 or go for the car, but since you already made your decision, I can't say I blame you for that. Just for fun, though, I'll look at those three cards and see if you would've won. The first card was...

...an A. Then the second card was...

...a C. Could it be that the third card contains an R, or even the word CAR? I'll just go ahead and take a look at the last one on the board, and I'm going to find that you would...

...not have won the car, because it was another A!

(applause)

(TPIR Theme 1972)

So you did the right thing, and as a result, you get $3,000 as a nice consolation prize. See you at the Wheel. Now George, let's get another player down here. Who do you have?

GEORGE: 123123123, come on down! You're the next contestant on The Price is Right!

(Walking 1976)

(cheers and applause)

I welcome you to the show, 123123123! Now let's take a look at the next prize.

GEORGE: This time, it's Rachel with a stylish baker's rack! (Giant Price Tag goes up to reveal it) (Eric) (applause) Foundry Select presents this Jaquan Iron baker's rack, which comes with four doors with shatterproof glass and four shelves to store your fine china and dinnerware on.

Thanks, Rachel!

Welcome back to The Price is Right, everybody! Before we continue, I'd like to show you a clip of Bob Barker and Rod Roddy discussing a famous incident that occurred on the original episode from 1998. Here it is.

(clips of Rod calling down a contestant named Nicole play on plasma screen behind audience, followed by one of Bob commenting on her last name; near the end, a clip of Nicole coming on down and confirming her last name plays)

Hopefully, we won't have anything of the sort going on here. George, who's going to join us in Contestants' Row?

GEORGE: They are His & Hers golf clubs, and a perfect place to take them, a trip to Augusta! (Rachel and James model them) (1994 Trip Cue) (cheers and applause) First, these Cobra Men's & Women's golf clubs each have a complete set of irons, woods and wedges, plus a driver and putter, each coming with its own bag and a set of PGA-approved golf balls. And second, you and a guest will fly round-trip coach from Los Angeles to Augusta, Georgia, for a six-night stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Augusta. Enjoy Southern hospitality at its very best in this charming town, and marvel at Augusta National Golf Course, where legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods perfected their game. Daily breakfast, day passes at Augusta National and golf lessons for two are included!

Let me give you one hint before we get started: The trip to Augusta is more expensive than the golf clubs. Therefore, you must set a magic number that is more than the price of the golf clubs, but less than the price of the trip. If you do it successfully, you win them both. And here's how you set the magic number: You just take this lever and push it up, like this. (does so, and random sounds play) If you believe that you may have gone too high, you can push it back down. So let me set it back to zero, to make it fair. (pushes lever back down until 0 is shown on display) Now get over there and set that magic number!

(random Magic # sounds play)

Yes, it's $6,852. Now Rachel, my second question is, is it more than the golf clubs? Show it to us!

Yes, it is, and we have our first win on our Flashback to 1998 episode! Up next is the Showcase Showdown, where we're going to spin the Big Wheel, and it's after this break.

It's time to spin the Big Wheel on The Price is Right! Hag, Plinkoman and JayC will be going for the big bucks and a spot in the Showcase round. The one of you who is nearest to a dollar without going over will move on to the Showcase, where lots of fabulous prizes await. And if you should get a dollar in one spin or a combination of two spins, you get $1,000 and a Bonus Spin!

SPINNING ORDER:
Hag ($1,200)
Plinkoman ($3,850)
JayC ($9,386)

But first, I will need three numbers from 1 to 20, plus the minimum score that you would stop on. Good luck to all three of you!

9, 2, and 7, stop if tied at 60 or higher, otherwise only stop with a winning score.

 13, 11, 19. Will stop on .65 or higher.

3, 8, 14 and stop on .70 or higher.
Title: Re: Teddy's TPIR: Episode 28/Flashback to 1998
Post by: Teddy on January 29, 2020, 06:36:29 AM
And the spinning starts with Hag.

(wheel beeps)

Let's hope for a great score with your first spin. And it's about to come to a stop on...

...65. So are you going to keep it or spin?

HAG: I'll spin again.

(wheel beeps)

Now as long as we don't get anything more than 35, you'll be fine. Now this could be trouble, go to 25, go to 25...

...and you got 90 cents total.

DING!

Now let's see what Plinkoman can do right here.

(wheel beeps)

His first spin is on its way, and here, it looks like he's going to get...

...80 cents, spin it again.

(wheel beeps)

10, 15 or 20 will put you in the lead. Sometimes it's best to think small. But we don't want the dollar now. WE DON'T WANT THE DOLLAR NOW!!!

MRRRRRRRRP!

(audience groans)

You know, that's what you should've gotten the first time. Sorry Plinkoman, better luck next time. Thanks for playing. And so it's up to JayC to beat 90.

(wheel beeps)

All you have to do is beat 90 cents, and you'll be in the Showcase. Could we have a tie here? Will we have a tie here?

Nope, you only got 25 cents, so you have to spin it again.

(wheel beeps)

And now, it comes down to this. Will it be Hag, or will it be JayC who moves on to the Showcase? JayC needs 70 to win, and 75 for a dollar...

...and he tied it with 65, for a total of 90. So that means we will have a Spin-Off to decide who will go to the Showcase. Hag, you will spin first.

(wheel beeps)

Of course, a dollar will still get you $1,000, and you'll still have your Bonus Spin. In the Spin-Off, you will get...

...40 cents, so back over there you go.

DING!

And now, JayC must beat 40 cents to get in the Showcase.

(wheel beeps)

You just need 45 cents or better to advance, and it looks like we will need another tiebreaker here...

...but we won't, because you only got 20 cents. JayC, thanks for playing.

(Dig We Must 1976)

Hag, you're going to the Showcase at the end of the show; see you there. Now, if there are any episodes you may have missed, you can watch them on CBS.com (http://www.cbs.com). That's CBS.com. We will continue our Flashback to 1998 after these messages. You don't want to miss it!

Here we go, actual retail price is: $793. wpghi5, you did it!

I am so glad you got up here at the very last moment possible, and as a reward, you will get to play for a great prize. Hey George, what is it?

GEORGE: Get ready to pack your bags, because we're sending you on a vacation to Orlando! (Rachel models it on plasma screen behind audience) (1983 Trip/Vacation Cue #1) (cheers and applause) You and a guest will fly round-trip coach from Los Angeles to Orlando, Florida, for a six-night stay at the Radisson Hotel Orlando at Lake Buena Vista. And your game is called Check-Out. We have five grocery products on this table; one at a time, you must tell me the prices of them. Then we'll show you how much they cost, and if your total is within $2 of the actual total, you are going to Orlando! Now listen to George as he describes the products.

GEORGE: All right, here we go. First, we have a four-pack of chocolate pudding, a 26-oz. jar of pasta sauce with mushrooms, an 8-oz. packet of mini chocolate chip cookies, a 64-oz. bottle of liquid non-chlorine bleach, and finally, it's a 30-count bottle of ZzzQuil Gummies.

To speed the game up, give me all five of your guesses.

When we add it all up, what is your total?

DING!

$24.15. So this means that the real total has to be between $22.15 and $26.15 for you to win. Let's start with the Snack Pack pudding. What is the real price of that?

(first bag pops up)

$1.50.

DING!

Next up is the pasta sauce; how much is it?

(second bag pops up)

It's $2.19.

DING!

We're up to $3.69, as we go to the cookies. They are...

(third bag pops up)

...$3.19, and that makes the total...

DING!

...$6.88, and we still have two more products to go. Next up is the bleach. The real price is...

(fourth bag pops up)

...$6.49, and what's the total?

DING!

$13.37. Now all we need is for that sleep aid to be around $11. For the win, what is the real price?

(fifth bag pops up)

$14.57, and that gives us a grand total of...

DING!

...$27.94, for a difference of...

MRRRRRRRRP!/Losing Horns

...$3.79. Oh, I hate when this happens. You played the game as well as you could, but you just didn't get the desired result. However, the Wheel is next, and you could make up for that loss.

(applause)

(TPIR Theme 1972)

And there you have it. We just played the same six games that they did on June 3, 1998. We still have the Showcase round to get to, but first, the Showcase Showdown is around the corner, so keep it right there!

The second Showcase Showdown is finally here on our Flashback to 1998! I have SilverFirePrime, wpghi5 and geniusinmath ready to spin the Wheel. The one of you who is nearest to a dollar without going over will be in the Showcase, and we have some great prizes awaiting there. If you get a dollar in one spin or a combination of two spins, you get $1,000 and a Bonus Spin, which will award $10,000 for a green section, and $25,000 for a dollar!

SPINNING ORDER:
SilverFirePrime ($645)
wpghi5 ($793)
geniusinmath ($25,609)

For each of you, I need three numbers from 1 to 20, plus the minimum score you would stop on.

SilverFirePrime just got his third and final strike, so he's out of the game. In this situation, I'll just get another name from the audience, and the lucky spinner will be tpiradam. Welcome to the show, tpiradam, and you're spinning in SilverFirePrime's place. All I need is three numbers from you and your minimum stopping score, per the instructions in my last post.

Post by: Teddy on February 08, 2020, 11:23:05 PM
And the spinning starts with tpiradam.

(wheel beeps)

The first spin of the second Showcase Showdown is on the way. And it's looking real good, it's looking real good, my friend...

...you got a dollar!

DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING!

(Dig We Must 1976)

(cheers and applause)

You will get your Bonus Spin in a moment, but first, let's see if wpghi5 can tie you.

(wheel beeps)

Only a dollar will do. Now it's too fast for a dollar, but that's why you'll get a second spin to do that. Your first spin is worth...

...20 cents, so you'll need 80 to tie it.

(wheel beeps)

Think 80 right now. It's going to go right on by, but sadly, it is not coming back. It's the end of the road for you...

MRRRRRRRRP!

(audience groans)

...and man, that hurts, being over by a nickel. But at least you made it on stage on the last One-Bid, and I'm glad you did. See you next time. Now geniusinmath is next.

(wheel beeps)

Let's see if you can achieve a tie. No, you won't get it on the first spin, but let's see what you do get. It is going to be worth...

...55 cents, so you need 45 to stay in the game.

(wheel beeps)

All you need is 45 cents, and here it comes, but sadly it's too fast for it.

You only got 25, and that's not going to be enough; thanks for playing.

(resets wheel to 5-cent space)

So tpiradam, you will be in the Showcase at the end of the show, as a substitute spinner for SilverFirePrime. Now you're going to take this one spin, and let me remind you that if you get one of the two green sections, you win $10,000, and if you get the dollar, you win $25,000! But you have to get it all the way around at least once, or it won't count, and you can't spin again.

(wheel beeps)

It's funny that back in 1998, if you got a dollar in your Bonus Spin, you would win $10,000, and a green section was worth $5,000. Speaking of a green section, here comes one, and that's more money for you!

CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG!

(Dig We Must 1976)

(wild cheers and applause)

Congratulations, you got $11,000 total! And you're not done yet, because you will be in the Showcase! It's coming up on the other end of this break, so don't go away.

It's Showcase time here on The Price is Right, with tpiradam, who pinch-hit for SilverFirePrime, as the Top Winner, and Hag as the Runner-Up. Each of you will have a Showcase of lovely prizes to bid on, and the one of you who is closer to the actual retail price of your Showcase without going over will win it. But if you are the winner, and you are $250 or less away from the retail price of your own Showcase, we will give you both Showcases! It wasn't too long after the original episode aired that they decided to raise the Double Showcase range from less than $100 to $250 or less, by the way. tpiradam, as the Top Winner, you can either bid on the first Showcase or pass it to Hag and wait for the second one. So let's take a look at Showcase #1!

(1972 Showcase Cue #1)

GEORGE: Well, since we played the same six games on June 3, 1998, let's take a look at the prizes that were won in that day's Showcase. And it all started off with a queen bed! (Rachel models it in Door #1) (applause)

This Wesley Allen Brookshire Brass Queen Bed features a sturdy frame and fine polished finish, which makes a great centerpiece for your bedroom. And take a comfortable night's sleep on this Serta Special Edition II Plush Mattress, featuring durable box spring construction and a soft memory foam outer covering. Then the second prize in the Showcase was an exerciser! (James models it between Doors #1 and #2) (applause)

(https://www.bowflex.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-nautilus-master-catalog/default/dw03fcf326/images/bowflex/max-trainer/m8/100756/bowflex-max-trainer-m8-1.png)

Get your workouts in with this Bowflex Max Trainer M8 exerciser, with an MP3 jack, cooling fan and full electronic display. Then the next two prizes after that were a washer/dryer and settee! (Rachel models them in Door #2) (applause)

First, this Maytag washer/dryer combo features a 5.3 cubic foot top load washer with deep clean option and an 8.8 cubic foot dryer with advance clean option. And this Grayson tufted settee from crateandbarrel.com makes a great addition to your home. But that's where the similarities end, because this time around, we're giving you a chance to bid on a prize that was not included in this Showcase back in 1998: this new truck! (James models it in Door #3) (Truck/Van Cue) (cheers and applause)

It's the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado 4x2 Extended Cab Long Box LT, featuring a 2.8-liter engine, six-speed automatic transmission, easy fold tailgate and tonneau cover. So it's a queen bed, exerciser, washer/dryer and settee, plus a new truck to haul your loot in. You will experience the same feeling the Showcase winner had on June 3, 1998, but only if the price is right!

So the question to you, tpiradam, is this: Do you want to bid on this Showcase, or pass it to Hag?
Title: Re: Teddy's TPIR: Episode 28/Flashback to 1998

There it is, and now, tpiradam, here comes your Showcase!

(Showcase 2007)

GEORGE: Now that we're back in 2020, let's see what you can win with this Showcase, and it starts off with a blackjack table! (Rachel models it in front of Door #1) (applause)

Play to your heart's content with this blackjack table from AmericanGamingSupply.com, which features a green velvet playing surface, a full 52-card deck and gambling chips. Next, we're sending you on the vacation of a lifetime, to fabulous Hawaii! (James models it on plasma screen behind audience) (cheers and applause)

You and a guest will fly round-trip coach from Los Angeles to Honolulu, Hawaii, for a six-night stay at theHyatt Centric Waikiki Beach. Take in the beautiful sights and sounds that Hawaii has to offer, plus it's conveniently located along the famed beach with an oceanfront view. Daily breakfast is included. Finally, we have a prize that will blow your mind the minute you see it, a new pontoon boat! (Rachel models it in Door #2) (Grandeur) (cheers and applause)

It's the Bentley Pontoons 240, featuring a 3.0-liter Mercruiser engine, protective canopy, a full lower deck for sleeping and storage, and room for 12 people. A trailer is included. So it's a blackjack table, a trip to Hawaii and a pontoon boat. You'll soon be setting sail in style, if the price is right!

Now tpiradam, I await your bid.

We're back with the Showcase results, and it's time to see who the winner is. tpiradam, you had the blackjack table, a trip to Hawaii and a pontoon boat. Your bid was $31,500, and the actual retail price is: $47,311, for a difference of...

DING!

...$15,811. (applause) Now we move on to Hag, who had the brass queen bed, an exerciser, a washer/dryer, a settee and a Chevy Colorado. You bid $41,226, actual retail price: (low, sad voice) $38,937.

MRRRRRRRRP!

You are over, and tpiradam wins!

DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING!

(TPIR Theme 1972)

(cheers and applause)

tpiradam has won $58,311 in cash and prizes, and that includes the $11,000 he won earlier spinning the Big Wheel. And so ends our Flashback to 1998; I hope you had as much fun watching as we had bringing it to you. This is Teddy here, reminding you to help control the pet population, and have your pets spayed or neutered, because it's the right thing to do. We'll see you next time on The Price is Right. Goodbye, everybody!

(end credits roll)

GEORGE: This is George Gray speaking for The Price is Right, a Fremantle production!

And that's a wrap on another great episode hosted by yours truly! I want to clarify that even though SilverFirePrime was not able to finish out the show, he still gets to keep his prize, because as long as the third strike doe not occur during a pricing game, the contestant will still be awarded any prizes they have won. With that being said, here's the final tally of our winners:

tpiradam ($58,311)
geniusinmath ($25,609)
JayC ($9,386)
Plinkoman ($3,850)
Hag ($1,200)
wpghi5 ($793)
SilverFirePrime ($645)

In terms of gameplay, the results for all six were identical:

Spelling Bee--BAILOUT (both playings saw three total cards earned)
Danger Price--LOSS (although this playing saw a wipeout, and the original playing was lost on the second pick)
Magic #--WIN (both playings had trips as the more expensive prize)
Most Expensive--LOSS (in both playings, the motor scooter was the least expensive prize of the three)
Any Number--WIN (in both playings, the player managed to completely avoid the piggy bank)
Check-Out--LOSS (both differences were in the $3 range)

Think this is one big coincidence, or just a series of intentional setups? You tell me...

Five games were played for the second time (Spelling Bee was won in Episode 16, Danger Price was lost in Episode 13, Magic # was lost in Episode 9, Any Number was won in Episode 8 and Check-Out was won in Episode 11). Most Expensive is the first game on my series to be played three times, but it also suffered its first loss after having been won in Episodes 1 and 16.

As we already spoiled June 3 as the original airdate for the episode that would be reenacted for this one, it's time to announce the winner of the TPG. Here's a recap of all the guesses:

JayC--September 28
geniusinmath--3/18/99
PatrickRox80--January 6, 1998
tpiradam--May 22, 1998
wpghi5--Jun. 15 1999
Clara26--May 21, 1998
Hag--April 14, 1998
GameShowFan9001--September 30, 1998
Plinkoman--May 19, 1998
123123123--December 17, 1998
SilverFirePrime--April 9th, 1998

The winner is tpiradam, since he was the closest without going later. If he signs up for the next show, he will get a First Four pass. And I will definitely do another flashback episode in the future, so be on the lookout for that.

Up next: Episode 29. The floor is now open...
