Title: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Super Market Sweep renewed for Season 2

If this needs to be moved to the other thread about ABC's Summer Games then that's fine.

Celebrity Wheel of Fortune getting renewed was pretty much a given. You have a household name that people get to watch in prime time, and it proved to be a big draw. Everyone who played wanted to make a difference and they had a lot of fun on the show. Can't wait to see who'll get the nod this summer.

Supermarket Sweep getting a second season surprised me. I wasn't sure ABC would give it another chance after they essentially burned off the first season. I'll still take David over Leslie.

They ran Sweep in season on Sundays at 8 and that’s burning it off?

Yeah, not sure what Patrick was saying here. It did well in the numbers and generated buzz online too -- no truly viral moments, but I think most of the internet seemed pretty excited about it coming back, and the core gameplay was pretty much pulled straight from the Lifetime/PAX version we remember. Big money bonus round was an upgrade too.

ABC didn't seem to speak much of it after the season ended. That's where I got impression. Even with that, I wasn't impressed.

What do they say about most shows after a season ends? Until its renewal or cancel time, they move on for the most part. It's the exception that anything other than generally meaningless platitudes are offered if a question is asked. That's pretty much par for the course.

I like SS but I wish they bring David back to either host it or do the play by play like Johnny did on the Life Time version

David Ruprecht is 72 years old now and the show clearly has a much different direction than his version did, there's no way he would host the show again. IMO I enjoyed Leslie's play-by-play during the big sweep in season 1. I think the best we'd get is a guest appearance from David on an episode, maybe hosting one segment for old time's sake.

They don't seem to want him there at all, unfortunately.

Not sure what David thinks of the new version, although he did mention he tried out to be the announcer and was disappointed he wasn't selected.

Passing along some scheduling information as ABC (https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/abc-2021-2022-fall-tv-schedule-1234975582/) has released their fall schedule with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune leading into Supermarket Sweep on Sundays.

The thing is a lot of people wouldn't be able to hear her at that new timeslot no matter how loud she can get.

I probably will have to DVR Celebrity WOF to watch mid week (Tuesday or Wednesday).  That is a rather tough spot to put the show in; you have major competition from the other three networks.  Obviously they had to put in something to compete with Fox, NBC, and CBS but I hope this star format can survive with the understanding that people might not pay attention to it at that time.

Sweep ran Sundays last fall, not sure how a one hour change makes a difference. And yes it’s cheaper time filler. Sunday Night Football is a formidable challenge. Programs will be judged accordingly.

I'm gob smacked that a lot of our members aren't getting by now that ABC isn't intending these shows to beat Football and others- but merely put something in the slot that will be competitive and have a good rate of return- and that they expect people to watch things on streaming later.

Indeed. ABC has a specific need there. Sure they're still keeping one scripted hour against football, but it makes more sense when you know you've got Idol waiting in the wings for wintertime to have a couple of lower cost, lower risk hours as part of the lineup. Something has to fill the slot.

Especially given that traditionally, women don't follow sports as often as men (despite Wheel's NFL Players Week back in the late '90s-mid 2000s having more female civilian partners than men), this will provide an outlet for the female viewing audience to see. CBS meanwhile has its traditional dramas, along with part of 60 Minutes depending on how late football runs. FOX of course kicks things off with a show that predates the Ruprecht era of Sweep as well as more animation following it. I like when different networks provide a variety of options since it allows for more flexibility regarding choice. Then again, unless if DC or Baltimore are playing on Sunday night, I'll be tuning into ABC, and if not, I'll DVR it.

I wonder if that played in, given certain markets already had WOF on an ABC station leading in to it last season. I remember hearing that being talked about as a possible drawback ratings wise (aka an hour and a half of Wheel either straight or within 2 hours was too much). Sunday would seem to work much better from that standpoint. Curious how the ratings will differ from one season to the other with that.

Being up against Sunday Night Football likely isn't going to boost its ratings from last season, if anything they'll drop a bit because of the stiffer competition compared to season 1.

The schedule wasn’t picked to benefit Wheel. It was Wheel that was picked to fill a need. That need was relatively low cost filler to plug in against NFL (in half the country) as a seat warmer before Idol starts up.

They probably don't care about the syndicated WOF being a lead-in or not. I remember wondering the same thing back when Jeopardy GOAT was happening, thinking that ABC stations that air WOF at 7:30/6:30c would swap them to have syndicated Jeopardy be the lead-in for GOAT, but nobody did that (I do recall the WOF episode that aired the day of GOAT Day 1 having a ton of banners and stuff advertising it though). Keep in mind that last February, ABC did a three-hour marathon of CWOF on a Thursday, so for many, that meant 210 consecutive minutes of Wheel of Fortune. They also did a three-hour JGOAT marathon of the eps up to that point the Saturday after it started, which was right after or not long after the syndicated Jeopardy's Saturday repeat in many markets (with a WOF repeat sandwiched in in my case).

The blame for the WOF vs. NFL starts with me.  I'm typically your sympathetic character when it comes to decent programming vs the best product.  On the other hand, it doesn't affect me at all.  I usually watch football, DVR the counterprogramming, and watch the latter later on (or not).  Of course, SNF could be a dud and then I'd tune into something else.  It is understandable if someone is filling a need, and nothing's getting cancelled because their ratings suck thanks to football or whatever else

The idea a local station would disrupt their established lineup over a short term one day a week program to follow is, honestly, illogical.

^Most of the celebs on the first season were pretty well known. I know Drew Carey was one of the contestants in season 1, but I don't think they're going to put several additional CBS personalities on.

I'm assuming they are all vaccinated and cases continue to drop so it's not that surprising they were able to take pictures together without masks. It remains to be seen how they will do the regular show in the new season-- how big the audience will be, whether the contestant area will go back to pre-COVID look, and whether contestants will still use the white things.
Title: Re: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Super Market Sweep renewed for Season 2
Post by: pannoni1 on June 07, 2021, 08:07:50 AM
I'm pretty sure the contestant area will remain the same (we're in HD after all), but look for Pat to return standing next to the contestants and collecting stuff that's lost to Bankrupt. This means along with those white things, no more "Bankrupt Trash" bins. Next Tuesday is when audiences are permitted to return in some capacity, but since I'm hoping that there would be a "proof of vaccination" policy for now, hopefully we'll get a full house for Season 39.

This upcoming Celebrity run could be the start what's to come. I honestly don't think Wheel will go back completely to pre-COVID until S40 at the earliest, but I can see some steps taken during S39 to ensure they're getting back to business.

As long as proper precautions are taken, I can see family members or friends being invited to the audience provided that they're vaccinated (don't think we'll see full capacity audiences for a while). Maybe we'll see team weeks again because of the extended podiums. We'll have to see how they fare with easing regulations.

Watched both season premieres last night. With Celebrity Wheel, the tape schedule in between seasons 38 and 39 gave what some people called a "beta" version of the later, where some of the changes like the contestant performing the Final Spin were present, but with the 2017 toss up and speedup puzzle cues still intact. The first bonus puzzle was the tricky "POPULAR CLIQUE" which is more suited for the syndicated version. The biggest surprise is that in the second half, there was a fourth round, with the bonus for solving the same as in Round 3, which really does make quick solves worthwhile in that part of the game. Jason and Michael were really fun to watch, but I did feel a bit sad for Cheryl who truly felt like the "third wheel" to them in terms of getting in on the action.

Supermarket Sweep was largely the same overall, but with a couple new bonuses including the return of the coffee grinder as opposed to the cup as seen in Season 1 (Which nobody sadly picked), along with a Big Sweep total low that barely cracked $1,000, where one team's bonuses racked up more than their total. The Bonus Sweep format eliminated the bailout options for a money ladder, with 90 seconds to five all five items. The first item was worth $5,000, the second $10,000, the third $25,000, the fourth $50,000, and the last $100,000. While I find that format a nice return to the traditional, I feel that the money amounts for the first four items should be lower since in the Ruprecht version, having two was not even worth a tenth of the $5,000. I'd do $1,000-$2,500-$5,000-$10,000 or $1,000-$5,000-$10,000-$25,000 for the lower amounts. I'll certainly be watching these instead of football (or DVR if Washington/Baltimore is on that night).

Cheryl didn't even get to spin the wheel in the first half! Normally that would never happen on the syndicated version because everyone is guaranteed to start at least one round, but on CWOF that's not a guarantee because they play the Triple Toss-Up after two rounds instead of three.

This makes no sense. the ABC version has a higher budget and you want to offer close to the same amount as a cable version from 30 years ago?

I often wonder if people forget this was just a cable show on PAX 30 years ago. The nostalgia is still very strong for it.

I am not one of those I hate new changes person when it comes to these rivals but Leslie's hosting is cringe worthy. If she says one hundred thousand dooolars one more time I will throw my remote at the TV. Have energy but don't let the ridiculous antics take away from the contestants and the game

although now I'm wondering how a Tina-Fey hosted Sweep would look

It's exactly backwards.

They didn't "look for" a host for Sweep, Leslie Jones pitched the show to Fremantle & ABC knowing she wanted to put her stamp on Sweep and they bought it.

This revival doesn't exist without Leslie Jones, for better or for worse.
