Here are the directions. There are six grocery items, but it is not simple pricing order! There are four levels: The ground floor (the mailbox), the first floor (the sofa and the stove), the second floor (the TV and the bathtub), and the attic (the safe). You put one grocery item in each spot, which means one in the mailbox, two in the first floor, two in the second floor, and one in the attic.

The first item goes in the mailbox. You automatically bank $1,000 on the first item.

The items on the first floor, in the sofa and stove, must add up to be more than the item in the mailbox. If right, you win $5,000.

The items on the second floor, in the TV and the bathtub, must add up to be more than the total of the items on the first floor only. If right, you win $10,000.

The item in the safe must be more than the total of the two items on the second floor only. If right, you win $100,000.

You can choose where you want to stop. If you are wrong at any level, you lose everything.

That was probably the easiest Push Over setup in the game's history. And nice win in Money Game, too.

Wasn't a bad show, overall. As a season premiere, a tad mild. The second aired show today was actually much more exciting, I thought.

It seems to me like pay the rent is doomed to be lost many times. The average contestant will hear Drew read the rules and think they should go from Least Expensive --> Most Expensive like Rebecca did exactly. Once you put the least expensive in the mailbox, there is no mathematical way of winning the $100k. The producers sure have an evil big game on their hands lol :)

CBS doesn't seem to have the episode up yet (and their entry page for TPIR wants me to have Flash 9 when I already have Flash 10...um, what?), so I can't watch yet. I wonder who the announcer is at least.

If she wanted to win this game...all she had to do was switch the Pantene with the corn, and Greco would have been very upset.  :P

I thought she'd won the $100,000 in Pay The Rent.  I was pretty sure that the strategy was to place the items in the house in order from least expensive to most expensive, just as Rebecca did.  Now I see that's not the way the game works.  She should've placed the corn on the second floor and the shampoo in the mailbox.  That would've made it $5.99 in the mailbox, $6.47 on the first floor, $6.98 on the second floor, and $7.30 in the safe.  I like Pay The Rent a lot better than Rat Race.  I would be fine with axing the rats and keeping Rent.

In the back of my mind, this felt like classic Price.  I enjoyed the show.  See, Mike?  You can put together a good show without a house band!

I don't want these types of showcases when the outcome, for all intensive purposes, is scripted.

Also, the lineup did suffer...

The "Price Look of the Week" is just...well....odd, and even Drew seemed confused by it.

Am I the only one who thought the tub in Most Expensive was a slam dunk?

The clamshell looks better, but could it have looked worse than last year's trippy pattern?

In the past, John and Marc alluded to the lack of space at Television City, and now the last two pricing games (Rat Race and Pay The Rent) are super-humongous.

I do appreciate the details in many of the IUFB presentations (the snowboarding stuff and the fridge today).

Many Drew got the memo about yelling the contestant's name incessantly when they are called down, as he seemed to stop himself from doing it, and perhaps looking for other things to say today.

Always exciting to see the show back.  Nice work crew.

And season 39 has officially begun! :)

I'm leaning toward not liking Pay the Rent. It seemed a bit too time-consuming to me, with the explanation, the product descriptions, and especially the placing of the products on the huge game board. I suppose it will go a bit faster as the season progresses. On the other hand, it will be fantastic to see a win.

I'm also not sure if I'll get used to hearing the brief comments from the announcer during the show ("Yeah!", "As we head toward season 40", even "good luck" at the end of prize descriptions). Was Rich replaced so we could hear such unnecessary, and perhaps unprofessional, remarks?

Let's see how the season goes.

Am I the only one who thought the tub in Most Expensive was a slam dunk?

Nope. I thought so too.

I don't understand "Pay The Rent" because they did not show the correct placement of the products.

Well, Drew DID warn us that Pay The Rent was a tricky game, and I saw how the $100K could have been won this time. I guess the rule of thumb is don't put the least expensive product on the bottom level. Also, I noticed the models have been handing "winner" license plates to somebody who has won a car. Do they keep those plates or not?

I love the new light border.  It's a cool compromise between last year's and the classic one.

I'm a little disappointed that the new season started with Pay the Rent...it's the first time a season hasn't opened with a car game since at least 1982.

It looks like they're not putting the logo on the screen after the fourth game anymore. :(

Yay for El Cheapo in Money Game! :)

Squeeze Play should have been won.

I wonder if there's going to be a pattern this year for when the announcer does or doesn't appear onscreen during contestant calldowns.

The scripts for the showcases were better than usual today, but #1's really fell apart...they were offering stuff they had offered before, and partway through, the theme seemed to change from "Prizes We've Never Offered Before" to "Prizes Related to the Ford Mustang."  It came off as very strange.

So far, miking the Beauties and letting the announcers talk at any time is both pointless and borderline distracting.

I don't know how I feel about those license plate holders.  I suppose they're pretty harmless, but it seems awfully gimmicky...and it also makes it almost a requirement for the contestant to run over to the car, which used to be something that was amusing because it almost never happened.

39th Season!

Much, much, much better than last season's premiere (though still a little weak for a season premiere). The new light border looked awesome, and is miles better than the blue square version from last season, but the new opening logo animation is way too busy. The small logo used before the closed-captioning plugs looks off, with the text being way too big. And no star wipe? Aww.

I didn't think J.D. was that bad, but the only time we should hear him is when he is reading copy (and I can do without the "good luck" tacked onto the end of prize descriptions).  I'm indifferent with hearing the models...it'll likely take a few more shows to have an opinion on that.

Pay the Rent's reveal was awesome. I loved the dimming of the lights, the giant "$100,000" sign dropping from the ceiling, and the doors opening to reveal the game.  As for the game itself, though...it's way too hard. The concept is great, and the rules are simple to comprehend...unfortunately, with the way the game is structured, it doesn't seem like it will be won all that often (if at all).

$10 says that the "Price Look of the Week" won't be seen again until December (with the "Price Look of the Week for Winter").

Push Over was a pushover (pun intended). There was only one correct-looking choice.

I liked seeing the calldown box twice during the show, and I like how the distracting dollar signs shooting from it are gone. It looked much better this way.

I laughed at the "prizes never seen before on TPIR" showcase...I swear I've seen trips to Las Vegas and pool tables before.  I want the entertainment wall in the second showcase. :-D

OVERALL: 3.5/5.

CBS doesn't seem to have the episode up yet (and their entry page for TPIR wants me to have Flash 9 when I already have Flash 10...um, what?), so I can't watch yet.

CBS typically posts episodes after 6pm ET...which means it'll likely be up sometime between 6pm and eternity.

Season 39! Season 39! Season 39!

To me, the lack of decorations made me think of this as less of a season premiere than in the past. How much could balloons cost?

Despite that, the show was quite enjoyable, even with the oddball game line-up which was probably to accomodate Pay The Rent.

Push Over was very simple. There were only 2 real possibilites.

I really hope the Price Look of the Week is gone after a few more weeks. It's just dumb. Just show the outfit as an IUFB and have at it.

I enjoyed JD Roberto as an announcer. He's not as bad as some made him out to be. His voice isn't as sing-songy as Rich's was. He could have stressed the word CAR when announcing "A NEW CAR!" a little more, but he's not bad. I'm looking forward to seeing the other try-outs to compare but until then he's fine.

The one thing about JD was his comments during some moments of the show. I see they're trying to copy LMAD, but I couldn't understand him half the time. Lanisha saying "sorry" during Most Expensive was fine.

I love the light border as well, I can finally see it on a non-HD TV.

The showcases were pretty good today. It's glad to see they didn't need a guest to make them look better.

I love the opening for Pay The Rent. I like how they darkened the studio for the reveal.

miking the Beauties
:-o

Anyway, I enjoyed it. The losses didn't matter to me because it was a lot of fun. Judging by this and the afternoon episode, it looks like the good work will keep on going successfully right into season forty.

(If they found a use for those spinning dollar signs somewhere on the set, I wouldn't mind. They're pretty neat.)

SEASON 39 IS HERE! :)

J.D. Roberto.....I'm not too crazy about him.

But, I LOVE the new light border!!! Gold is back!

No Plinko!!!

Pay the Rent isn't that bad of a game. Once you understand it that is.

Push Over was exceptionally simple!

Well, at least we had outright wins this year. :) No tech wins either.  :oldlol:

(If they found a use for those spinning dollar signs somewhere on the set, I wouldn't mind. They're pretty neat.)

I'm gonna have to agree with that one. 3StrikesFan had a good idea of using them for a car backdrop.

I knew Rebecca should have quit with the $10K, as there was no way the cat food was over $11.48.  Compdude does a good job of showing how the game should be played to win the grand prize; unfortunately, I don't see many contestants using this strategy.  On the other hand, almost anyone can win $10K every time playing the way Rebecca did.  A general rule of thumb is that if you have a big jump in totals between any two levels, you should stop at the $10K level.

I'll also echo Wayoshi's comment that the rest of the lineup was very poor -- three quickies and two fast car games.

Pay the Rent is going to require some serious calculation. It is a big puzzle game, trying to figure out how to arrange the items so that you have all the levels in the right order.

The most important thing: the least expensive item DOES NOT GO ON THE BOTTOM!!!

Not necessarily.. all depends how they want to set it up.

Off on another tangent tho.. why after 38 years, did they put a small green dollar sign on the stage floor? Obviously it's Drew's mark, but why not tape the marks like they have since the show began?

Wow, Season 39! Holy Crap!

I really enjoyed this episode.

I love the new light border. It reminds me of the old one, and I noticed the lights chase the opposite way now.

I loved Pay the Rent, especially the reaveal! The rules aren't too hard to understand, but I have a feeling most contestants will just order the products from least to greatest.

As for JD, I thought he sounded a bit nasally. I'm looking forward to hearing Jeff give it a try.

Here it comes!  Season 39!!!

Pay The Rent: OH MY GOD THAT WAS THE MOST IMPRESSIVE OPENING I'VE EVER SEEN.  My first thought was to put the corn in the mailbox too.  My immediate reaction when she lost was "WHAT THE HELL THIS IS UNWINNABLE!??!?!(Shift+One)(Shift+Slash)!", however upon further investigation, it seems it IS winnable.
EDIT: Upon even further investigation, it wasn't winnable.  No possible combination of amounts would have been able to combine to less than $7.30.

Lucky Seven: $24,23_... I called a lowball for the fourth number.

Push Over: Agreed, Kitch.  Easiest. Setup. Ever.

Most Expen$ive: Evil setup, that hot tub was HUGE bait.

Money Game: Nothing much to report here, except that they have kept the tradition of having the season number as a choice on the board.  And it's still not part of the price.

Squeeze Play: Evil setup again.  My thought was the second 7.

Showcases: $40,039//$71,039... it's a shame that school prevented me from playing.  I'd actually love to have that pool table.

Oh, and did anyone catch Jeff Davis sitting in the audience?  He was on the stage right side, and was really prominent during the 5th calldown.

Add me to the list who loves the new light border.   That was very nice.

PtR - Well, while winner $100,000 seems very unlikely, winning $10,000 should be a slam dunk, most of the time.   My problem with this game will be how much they push the contestant to make a decision.   Time will tell.

PushOver was exceptionally easy as was Money Game, assuming you know el cheapo.

It took a moment, but I finally figured the PtR puzzle.

Attic: Cat Food (7.30)
Second Floor: Cleaner and Corn (5.49 + 1.49 = 6.98)
First Floor: Pizza and Cinnamon (3.49 + 2.98 = 6.47)
Mailbox: Shampoo (5.99)

This game is going to be REALLY HARD. But for $100,000, it should be.

Opening:  I like the new light border and the new logo.  I can actually see this light border.
Pay The Rent:  Neat game!  Too bad Rebecca didn't win the $100,000.
Most Expensive:  I thought for sure Cheryl was gonna win! 8-O
Showcases:  Too bad that Porsche wasn't won.

Not too bad overall, but IMHO, I've seen better season premieres.

“Let’s offer a huge prize that we can’t possibly afford to give away and then make it completely impossible to win”. That seems to be the M.O. of the powers that be at TPIR these days. Pay the Rent has been discussed to death already in Talk Is Right, but today’s playing is a textbook example of how counterintuitive the game is. The same approach that would have won the contestant $10,000 would almost certainly lose anyone $100,000. By making the game intentionally deceptive, they guarantee that they will never actually have to give the money away. The same thing happened in the showcase today. Porsche Boxters are only worth about $55,000 fully loaded. This means that in order for that showcase to breach near 80, they had to include a near $25,000 entertainment center/TV package. No one would possibly guess that a TV package would cost that much so then again they guarantee they don’t have to give away the Porsche. It is getting really irritating to see this so blatantly on display again in the beginning of season 39.

That being said, I enjoy the introduction to Pay The Rent and the prop a lot, and the game is certainly a little suspenseful to watch. It times out a bit long though (it appears to be a 7 minute game) so any time it shows up we should expect lots of quickies, which may get obnoxious if it’s frequently played and frequently lost.

Other than that this was a fairly enjoyable premiere – at least some games were won this year. J.D. is very nasally but overall not that annoying to listen to, and he is certainly better at ad-libbing than Rich was, which may be something they were looking for. Doesn’t look like the show will go all that much in the variety show direction based on today’s two shows , which is good to see. It just feels awkward to have a model say “sorry” after a pricing game is lost though.

Timings:
Pay The Rent (7) - 7:54
Lucky $even (4.5) - 3:57
Push Over (4) - 3:48
Most Expensive (3.5) - 3:13
Money Game (4.5) - 3:44
Squeeze Play (3.5) - 3:11
Total time (27.5): 25:47

Sure it was, IN fact, the contestant only had two mixed up

7.30 on top
5.49+1.49 = 6.98
3.49+2.48 = 6.47
5.99 on bottom

I noticed today during the pay the rent game, JD read the products name during the description of the products. Is the
going to be a permanent thing now or just during the announcer rotation?

Also during the commercials there were normal commercials not the 1-800 ones. I hope to see normal
commercials again.

Will the show be using classic cues during the games and prizes this season?

Why would these two things have anything to do with one another?

The light border really took me back.

I loved Pay the Rent's reveal. As for the game. . .

Call me time warped crazy, but I think that Any Number should be played every season premiere. I can't believe they didn't play it at all on both shows. I mean it is probably coming this week of course (10 shows, a number of pricing game combos), but I think it deserves its rightful place.

The show was alright, afternoon was better. JD was -__- He wasn't out right terrible, but man. What showcases what pizazz! I can't believe people still heavily underbid on the showcase with the Porsche in it.

Right now, I am watching the late episode.  However, I have a few thoughts about the season premiere.

1) J.D. Roberto - I remember him hosting American Idol extra a couple of years ago.  He wasn't bad, but after several years with Rich, it did sound strange.  Of course, there's the other two that we have to look out for.

2) Pay the Rent - Interesting, but a little confusing.  I should have stayed with the $10,000.

3) Models talking - I know that it was mentioned before, but because of the suddenness, I bet some of you took a spit-take at this.  It will take some time to get used to it, but the only issue is who, what was said, and when.  As long as it is limited, it will not be a problem.

4) Drew himself - Looks good.  Also will take a bit of time getting used to thin Drew instead of fat Drew.

5) That's all I need, to have my dinner on a crane over Las Vegas.  IMO, no thanks.

6) The winner license plates...you think running to the car is obvious enough...now they have this???

I give J.D. Roberto a pass for his weak early show. He's new to this, and he did sound much more lively in the late show. There is going to be some up and down in announcing quality, I'm certain, but as long as there's upward progression I'm not going to get myself worked up. And also there's the other two announcers to consider.

All in all, very good.    I especially like the new graphics.     One has to appreciate how Drew poked fun at the "Look of the Week... For the Fall Season."

My very own personal opinion is that JD did very well.   His voice is different, but he does what is supposed to be done - read the copy.   So many times Rich didn't just read the darn copy... he tried to REAAAD the DAAARN COOOOPYYYYY, and that was distracting.     There is still room for improvement... but I think they're  headed in the right direction.

Pay the Rent seems to me to be just another game.   For this type of prize, I would have expected a much more identifiable gameplay.    I think it would be easier to win if they allowed the contestant to work top-down instead of bottom-up.  That is probably part of the design, however.

What was up with the small dollar sign on the floor?

My guess is that it's just a mark to let Drew (and the contestant) know where to stand... you wouldn't want to get hit by the $100,000 sign, would you?!

Granted, they could use a simple black piece of tape. However, somebody might've thought it looked bad -- a piece of tape out in the middle of a white stage often does.

Hence, why when the show went HD in season 37, all the little pieces of tape and marks on the floor were removed.

Overall a decent season premiere.  Miles ahead of last year's, that's for sure, but nowhere close to Seasons 34 and 35!

Like many of you, I also like the new light border.  The gold color was definitely missed.

Pay the Rent is OK.  The reveal is pretty cool, but the gameplay needs tweaking.

I didn't mind JD Roberto too much.  I hope he doesn't get the job, but he is OK for now.  I am very curious to see/hear the other two.

Also, did anyone else notice this: there was a lady shown on-camera right before Vonice came up on stage (one of her group I assume) who was wearing an "I <3 Rich Fields" T-shirt?  I thought that was interesting

Here's to a good season with more winners than last year!

As I mentioned in my taping report, I was ONE DAY short of being in the audience for this one. Some of the people I talked to in line for the show that will now air on Friday at 2:00 were in the audience for this one, though, and they said that they had a good time.

I guess we were just conditioned by the Roger years to expect the season premieres to be almost like primetime specials as far as giveaways go. Aside from Pay the Rent and the showcases, the games were just average fare.

Pay the Rent seems all right. Might need a little tweaking, though. My guess is that they'll only trot it out a few more times this season, much like Triple Play was when it debuted. I doubt we'll be seeing it on any regular basis.

Lucky $even was begging to be won today, it seems. I can't remember the last time the numbers were all so close to five.

Also, did anyone else notice this: there was a lady shown on-camera right before Vonice came up on stage (one of her group I assume) who was wearing an "I <3 Rich Fields" T-shirt?  I thought that was interesting

As I mentioned in my taping report also, a LOT of people had no idea that Rich was let go. They only found out about it when I told them. There were people at my show as well with Rich shirts on and the reception to that news was...less than positive...

I have to say i really liked the reveal of pay the rent. i felt it was very glitzy with the big sign and dimmed lights and perfectly suitable for a game offering 100k and made it feel like a game show and not so cheesy as it has been at times. on that note however i dont think the top prize should be 100k, especially with that big leap from 10k to 100k. i was worried that multiple people would win this and i feel that winning the game alone and winning more than 100k in a pricing game is a bit much, considering in daytime episodes there have only been two people to win more than 100k in prizes. i do like how this game involves serious thinking, not just ordering the products least to most expensive.

JD sounds a bit animated at the moment but then again im used to hearing rich announce.

Drew looked really good. i almost didnt believe it when i saw a pic of him a few weeks ago, almost looked like someone photoshopped it

It was disappointing to see Esther lose lucky seven, however it was good to see the price wasnt something with back to back 1s and 9s

Push Over was actually exciting to watch, perhaps due to how big the trip seemed

For some reason the fortune hunter music makes multi prize games seem more hyped up as opposed to just a grill, motorbike and a bathtub. i know that probably doesnt make sense

money game didnt seem to fit in with a season premiere but luckily we had a contestant who knew about el cheapo

I dont think squeeze play couldve been won easily, 9770 didnt look right

those showcases were loaded. the script for the first one wasnt right at all. saying theyve never offered a mustang is like saying theyve never given away money.

overall good to see new episodes again. heres to a prosperous season full of winning! :)

It was a great season premiere and Drew looks like a different man since losing weight.

Pay the Rent: This game looks okay, but the rules were confusing.

Lucky $even: That third number hurt her.

Push Over: Easy win there.

Most Expensive: I thought it would've been the tub, but I, too would've been wrong.

Money Game: Another good win.

Squeeze Play: I knew it was $9,770

I like the new light border.  As said, it is a nice throwback to the classic one.

The intro to Pay the Rent was really cool.  It really reminded me of the intro to Big Jon's original game Tower of Cash.  As for the game, it's fun because of the set and the strategy involved.

JD Roberto wasn't bad, but his side comments weren't necessary and he went a little fast at times.

I am perfectly fine with the "Price is Right fashion look of the week" as long as Drew is there to rip on it after it happens.

The problem with Pay the Rent is that not many contestants are going to understand the strategy needed to play it. Even I got fooled for a second by thinking that the idea was to go least expensive to most expensive, but it's actually a lot more complicated than that. Despite the huge payout, I'm not really a fan of this game.

I love the license plate that they're apparently going to give to car winners now. Very cool idea!

I'm impressed with J.D. Roberto... he's a very solid announcer. I definitely wouldn't mind having him as the regular guy, although I'll have to wait and see how I feel about Brad and Jeff, who I'll probably have a bit of bias towards since I love Whose Line.

BEST CONTESTANT OF THE DAY: Cheryl

My guess is that Drew is going to be doing a very detailed intro of Pay the Rent soon. Because yes. Almost all contestants are going to put the least expensive item first. I bet 80% of the audience thought that it was least to most expensive given how many egged the contestant on at the end. There was no way in heck that the cat food was more than 11 dollars. Come on. :)

Let's start this review with a positive: I really like the new light border. The frame and the bulbs actually look like they're related to one another. Something about it gives off an obvious air that it's computer-generated and not real, but I can't put my finger on what that something is. But it still looks good.

The logo, on the other hand, looks like it's trying too hard.

As I watched the contestant play Pay the Rent, my biggest complaint was that I never got to see the products on the table until the contestant made each selection, which made it difficult to play along with the game. I couldn't remember exactly what all of the products looked like, so I had to wait until she picked the cinnamon and the pizza to go on the first floor to see what else was on the table and think "Oh, I do agree with that decision." Instead of making that decision for myself. Shots of the products in play are more important than shots of the audience yelling advice.

During the game, Drew did very little to build up the suspense of the reveals on each level. Granted, it was hard to do when the first and second floors became obvious after the first of the two prices was shown, but his build-up of the $100,000 prize was minimal and when he called for the price of the cat food, it was hardly any different than when he asked for the price of the cinnamon. Even if he thought she was going to lose, he needs to make the potential to win $100,000 sound like the biggest event he can.

Why do they keep insisting on playing Lucky $even during their season premieres if they're going to keep making it difficult to win? That 2, especially followed by a 3, was going to defeat most contestants. And once again, we go into the first commercial of the new season with two losses. I guess nothing has changed.

Surprisingly, Push Over was set up to be easy. And we got a winner in the season premiere! One winner out of three! That's still pretty sad!

They were back to form, though, with Most Expensive. I picked the bathtub, too.

I won Money Game for exactly the reason Drew commented on while Vonice was strolling over to her truck: nobody would have expected 10 to be right. Nice to see an actual vehicle be given away on the season premiere, even though the producers clearly didn't want it to happen.

There were too many monitors being used as backdrops. There was one behind the Apple products, so they could display the words "CALLING PLAN." There was one behind the car stereo, for no reason. And there was one behind the snowboards, also for no reason. Three times in one show is overkill.

I've been liking most of Rich DiPirro's work, but as I mentioned in Pay the Rent, he needs to remember to take his shots while keeping in mind the people watching at home. During the last spin of the second Showcase Showdown, the wheel was slowing down near the 50 cents Vonice needed for a dollar, but since there was a close-up of her making small talk with Drew, we didn't see the wheel get near that space until it was almost past it, ruining the suspense.

I am amazed at how sloppily written the first showcase was. They announce the theme as "prizes never before seen on TPiR," then acknowledge that the theme doesn't apply to the last prize? That looks bad to everybody who watches the show, including the casual viewers. They couldn't find any nice model of car that was new for 2011 and had never been on the show before?

I was really hoping that they had stopped the practice of displaying the showcase winner's grand total over a shot of Drew, but I see they're still doing that. It still makes no sense.

I don't understand what they gained by replacing Rich with J.D. He's just as forceful and in your face as Rich was, just with a different voice. He also called Drew "boss" at the start of the show, so he's sucking up just as much as Rich did. And by the time we got to Squeeze Play, I was getting sick of hearing J.D. pipe in at random intervals. I didn't need to hear him make a sarcastic comment about the lengthy come on down, and it was also out of line for him to deflate the reveal of the sailboat by pointing out how the contestant couldn't use it.

Outside of the problem of the prizes being too hard to win for it being a season premiere, the biggest problem with this episode was Drew's hosting. He just coasted his way through this episode, including his tired "Who do you want to say hello to?" at the wheel. After three full years on the job, I expect better than "not being actively bad," and Drew just isn't delivering. Based on the premiere, season 39 promises to be more of the same of what they gave us last season, so if you've been enjoying what the show has turned into, you'll be satisfied. But I expect more entertainment than this.

All I can say is, it's going to be VERY strange not hearing Rich Fields from now on...

J.D. went from barely tolerable to painful to listen to as the hour progressed.  Although I didn't mind him so much on Shop 'Til You Drop some years back, here...I didn't like the way he emphasized some words over others (his "Showcase Showdown" during the CNAOS plug comes to mind).

That aside...I think I *barely* caught the last Lucky $even number to be either a 2 or 4.

Ugh! Those shout-outs at the wheel are beyond annoying at this point. It may be nice for the contestant, but the entertainment value for the audience is zero. I don't care if they want to say hello to Booboo, Bobo, and Bebe. I'm also surprised by how many of them get so carried away with the shout-outs that they don't even pay attention to the wheel.

'Pay the Rent' wasn't as easy as everyone thought.  I would've stopped at $10,000.
'Pushover' was an easy win.
'Lucky $even'...the contestant had the right idea, but it didn't work.
'Most Expensive' was tricky.
'Money Game' was a good win.  Almost an El Cheapo.
'Squeeze Play'...I would've taken the first seven out.  ( buzzer sounds )

Showcases...Been a while since I saw a Porsche being used.

Kitch: I have a couple of corrections. According to her name tag, the woman who played Money Game was named Vonice, not Monique. And Lanisha modeled the Sixth IUFB.

I don't begrudge Vonice for outbidding Aimee by a buck on the snowboarding equipment. Aimee's hubris was undoing. I think $1 over is fair game, but that's especially the case when another person in bidder's row broadcasts the fact that their bid should be fairly accurate based on their knowledge. That was a great Money Game win.

I agree that Pushover was easy. Any higher price would be quite a stretch for a trip to Paris.

JD Roberto was so-so. He wasn't good enough for me to want him to have the job. On the other hand, he wasn't bad enough to merit gnashing of teeth and wailing. And after all that was made of the announcers as improv comedians idea, to me, JD came across as close to Mr. Traditional Announcer Guy than Rich Fields (though he did deliver a couple of jokes). I did like the quip about a sailboat being the perfect prize for someone from Iowa.

By the way, I noticed Jeff Davis sitting in the audience as the woman called down for the Fifth IUFB walked by. Jeff was a few rows back from where they seat the players who have already been onstage.

So, who is Tracy Verna?

According to imdb.com, Tracy Verna is known for producing such memorable series and documentaries as Meet the Pandas, Total Zoo, How Clean is Your House?, and The Man With Three Wives.

How does one go from producing only three things in eight years (one episode of a series, a TV movie, and a short-lived cable series) to co-executive producer of the longest-running U.S. game show in history?

Verna's resume makes Mike Richard's one look great.

Who knows! Maybe Tracy Verna wasn't hired to keep Mike Richard in check, but maybe more to learn the trade (not that Richard is the best to learn it from, but that's another debate...)

Whatever happened to "the focus should be on the contestant!" I'm not saying that you ever said that, but the show will never win. We will always complain that we put either too much or not enough focus on the contestants...

True, the focus should be on the contestants, but perhaps in a different way. Instead of focusing on the contestants by letting them spill out a bunch of hellos, Drew should involve the contestants in where the wheel is going to land, as he usually does in the second spin if taken, allowing proper contestant/wheel focus. Letting the contestants say hellos during wheel spinning takes away from the focus of the wheel and the suspense of the moment.

A quick Google search shows that Verna is/was the executive producer for "American Idol Extra." There's a shocker.

Anyway, where the heck do I even start?

The light border is AWESOME. I love the whole retro yet modern feel of it. The new logo kind of reminds me of Davidson's logo, but it still looks cool.

Pay the Rent's opening is seriously the greatest intro on The Price is Right. I can't wait to see it played again!

"The Price is Right look of the week ... for fall." Drew completely mocking the whole idea.

Push Over was absolutely ridiculous. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing.

Aimee seemed like she would've been a fun contestant! It's a shame she didn't get on stage.

El Cheapo for the win! Glad to see the new executives keep using that strategy. Also, I love the license plates! I know if I won a car on the show, that sucker would be on the car as soon as I get it!

Does the Wheel seem like it's...I don't have a word for it...but I guess "tighter" to anyone else? It seems like when it slows down much faster.

My jaw literally dropped at the second showcase. That would be like Heaven!

And one last thing: I must be the only person in the world that enjoyed JD today. He seems quick on his feet and really glad to be there, and I definitely don't find his voice annoying like others do. Oh well.

Great start for this season! :-D

Does the Wheel seem like it's...I don't have a word for it...but I guess "tighter" to anyone else? It seems like when it slows down much faster.

The Wheel is capable of being tightened, mainly because it becomes "loose" after so many X number of spins.

I still can't believe that a Ford Mustang Showcase--that's been infamous for not being as high as some people have bid for years--can ever top $40,000.  Granted, I would NEVER buy a pool table that's $9,995, but I'm digressing.  :P

All in all, I thought Pay the Rent was a great addition that might be around for a while, but my burning question is "will it receive as much play time as Plinko or G-R?"  As far as the announcing goes, J.D.'s not as bad as we all thought he would be; I can understand that he does sound a little slow at times, but he does a very capable job.  As for Drew...wow, he has changed so much over the years, and I have a good--no, a GRRReat (gotta get that outta the way, ya know)--feeling that this could be Drew's best season at the helm.  Who knows what the future might hold?  Here's to another great season of overbids, close calls, painful losses, big wins, DSWs, contestant fails--here's to a brand-new era at "The Price is Right!"

:-D

The issue with the shout-outs at the wheel is that the focus is only on the contestant. The millions of us watching at home don't know Aunt Ida, Me Maw, and Cousin Earnest... and thus do not care. The "focus on the contestant" isn't about making him/her happy.  In an audience participation game show, the contestants are props. It's about "using" the contestant to provide entertainment value for the home viewer. Bob understood that and manipulated it masterfully. Drew doesn't get it. He shifts abruptly from trying to be a stand-up comedian to providing the contestants with qualty customer service. He doesn't have the magical method of finding the entertainment value in the contestants and extracting it for the viewers.

Whatever happened to "the focus should be on the contestant!" I'm not saying that you ever said that, but the show will never win. We will always complain that we put either too much or not enough focus on the contestants...

Bob did that for a while. Then the commercial announcements overtook the "free time". It was played down considerably much after season 25, and virtually nonexistent after season 30. Drew probably could be as funny, if not funnier, than Bob if not for the reduction in actual playing time.

But that's a discussion for The Talk is Right.

I was a big fan of PTR and its reveal. What an exciting way to start a show. Of course, the energy went down from there. There was no way the cat food was going to be $11, so I was surprised to see the contestant go for the $100k.

I loved how Gwendolyn spoke once last season, but I could really do without anyone speaking out of place. The occasional 'good luck' is fine, but some of this is forced. It was tough listening to JD's remarks out of turn. This is really modeled off LMAD.

How many shows is JD scheduled to do before they go to the other announcers?

Quote

I agree with this quote,

The games have becomes more difficult to win since Roger's departure, for sure!

The last number in Lucky $even was 7, BTW.
