Clearview is a road sign font that was just introduced a few years back. Some states, like Texas and Michigan love it and actively replace the old font (FHWA Series fonts) with it. Here's another example of Clearview with upper and lower case letters:
By this point Texas is full of the stuff. I-40 between Amarillo and Erick, Oklahoma has not a single FHWA Series exit sign. It's all Clearview.
Oklahoma is taking a bit more conservative approach to it, installing Clearview signage only when older signage needs to be replaced:
And Missouri, bless them, doesn't use the stuff at all. Here's a MO sign with the traditional FHWA Series E-Modified font:
Here's a thread from a roadgeek forum on
why Clearview is percieved as ugly.
Army, if you want to look at some Clearview signage in person, just take a drive down the I-39/90 tollway (boy, that is one interminable work zone). Compare that signage to I-39 south of the tollway, which still has the traditional FHWA fonts.
