are the camera shots getting better to you?
« on: March 05, 2007, 12:21:12 PM »
I've been taking notice that a lot lately some of the camera angles used this season have been better than they have in the past few years with Bart at the helm of directing. Does anyone else think they're getting better somewhat?

No.

And as for your thread title...isn't that an oxymoron or something?

Probably. I went ahead and changed it.

#1.)  You've totally missed my point.

#2.)  This leads me to question whether you even know the meaning of "oxymoron."

The camera shots are getting worse, not better. God only knows what the most talented director in the world will delete next from the directing we love from Price. (Notice the elimination of all the lights turned down before "Every Room in the House" showcases, as well as eliminating the light box after the 4th PG and playing car games again 4th).

Did anyone notice the disastrous attempt to do something cool when they zoomed on Phire's face and faded to Brandi, last week? What the hell was that?

None of those three is a valid complaint for the purposes of this thread.  The former two were time-saving measures, and the latter two had nothing to do with Bart.

(And last time I checked, most of us were enjoying getting car games fourth.)

No the shots aren't any better.  However, since Bob dictates so many orders (like no filming him from the back, etc.)  I think it will be interesting to see if and how things change next season.

The only shot I've noticed is better is the tilting wheel shot, which is not nearly as bad as when it was first introduced. (Of course, the old arrow shot would be even better, but that's neither here nor there.)

At the same time, so many other elements of the show have improved (game selection, showcases, the set) that I don't even mind most of the direction.

As an experienced camerman, I'd like to see a wider shot of the audience at the very beginning of the show, not just the first two rows. Also, we no longer see the turntable spin around to reveal a game, I'm sure that's also to save time, but they could still spin it AFTER the game's over, as they did in the 70's. Another shot that's long gone is any game played behind door 2, they would show Bob in front of the game while he tossed to commercial, now all we see is the steep angle of door 1 behind him. The only exception is Safe Crackers or Golden Road, and that's because they're so big anyway. I imagine that the ever growing time constraints will prevent ever going back to the easy-going shots of the 70's and 80's. I'd also like to see them loose the ceiling shot during the closing credits, and maybe do a pan shot from the audience to the stage showing all cameras, crew, etc.

I noticed that and thought it was brilliant for some reason. That's one of the many reasons why I was asking you guys this.

No, but I noticed the successful attempt.  I thought it was pretty cool.

Yeah, I liked it.

I'd say in general, though, the camera work's not getting much better.
