It had to happen. Our first double overbid of 2019. Very awkward show. The overhead display had problems returning to the roof, James did not know how to use the cash register. Using all five products and going over, rare to see. Hope tomorrow goes better.

Yikes. Bad show.

Is the cash register still the same one from 1972? Or at the very least the one in the Golden Gallery? Because I took one look at that thing and it made me confused as heck. I even have an adding machine and that cash register looked like rocket science to me.

Finally, the messed up ARP reveal on SC2: What on earth was going on? The closed captioning said this:
[attach=2]
But the best freeze-frame that I could get of the card (thanks to Drew swinging it up in the air before putting it down on the podium) clearly shows at the very least that the last digit is not a zero. I believe it's a 5.
[attach=1]
For comparison, here is a price tag from Dec. 19, with two 3's and a 5:
[attach=3]

By the way, Adam, you mistakenly entered the ARP as 27K, when it was 25K.

OUCH! Grocery Game was a measly seven cents away from avoiding its tenth consecutive loss!

There was absolutely no way Sandy's showcase was going to be more than $30,000.  The manual-transmission Jetta S is the base model and starts just under $20,000 (knowledge that would've saved the family who played Triple Play on the 24th), and the coffee package and home gym weren't going to add anywhere near $10,000.  The moment she said $38,000, I instantly knew she had :willyd: it.

You also know that it was a particularly bad day when the biggest winner of the day has won a mere $11k and change.  At least we got a kinda funny moment when James couldn't operate the Grocery Game register, even if it did end up in a loss.

Very fun segment and playing of Grocery Game.
How rare is it to pick all 5 grocery items in Grocery Game , 10/19/2009 was the last time someone did it ( it was also the last time it was won by using all 5 grocery items)

For those interested, direct from the golden gallery, see below.
It's easy to see why James didn't know how to enter 11.07.

Aha! I figured out how you'd enter $11.07. This cash register works very similarly to an adding machine. The four columns correspond to the different place values in the dollar amount you wish to add to the total. So, for example, in that photo, the $20, $1, 20c, and 1c buttons are depressed. Hitting the big right button on the right side of the register (which isn't in the picture) adds $20+$1+20c+1c = $20.21 to the total.

However, here's the catch: Like an adding machine, not all four place values have to be used. For example, if you only wanted to add $1.25, you wouldn't need to bother with the tens column. The same principle applies if you want to add $11.07. First, you clear the keypad so no buttons are depressed. Then press the $10 button, the $1 button, don't push a button in the tens of cents column, then press the 7c button, which will add $11.07.

Here's a video of a very similar cash register, the NCR Class 24, in operation: (not my video).

Several issues in today's show between the number in Pick a Number not revealing right away, the stand for the watches not returning to the ceiling, and James not being able to operate the cash register in Grocery Game. It's nice they still leave these moments in though since they do usually provide a laugh.

I thought for sure the popcorn machine would be $750 in Safe Crackers.

Definitely an interesting Grocery Game playing between James' handling of the register and how Maria played it using all five items. The icing was much more expensive than I thought it would be, I really thought it would be within range for her.
Note for Adam- you put toothpaste for her fourth item instead of the water in listing out her purchases.

Just noticed that the font of the cash register numbers has changed. Is this the first playing with the new font?

I'm not 100% buying James didn't know how to use the register.    Wouldn't they have figured that out in rehearsal?   Now maybe it was he just didn't know how to do .07

First show of the New Year ending in a Double-Overbid...oy vey!

At least we got a hilarious Grocery Game with James trying to figure out how the cash register works, but this is not the first time we've seen an example of this. I remember a playing from 1992 that Carlos uploaded some time ago, and Holly had similar trouble operating the register; Bob had a field day with that one. Like this playing, that one also ended in a loss, the only sour note of the moment.

James grew up in a digital world and that classic NCR cash register is analog so no need for a "zero" button.  But someone should have explained that to him.  Also, did they change the font on the numbers and how/why?  That cash register is almost 50 years old, I wouldn't risk opening it up just to change fonts; they are lucky it's still working!
