Time to speculate on what pricing game broke to force an awkward Pick-a-Number for a car sixth in primetime!
Torgo has left the building. John and I never really cared for the way he presented himself.

So the intro was with a montage.  Honestly, that seemed to flow pretty well.  Yeah, it’ll be weird not seeing an audience pan (especially if they do that for the whole season) but I could get used to seeing that.

The podiums should include the names of the contestants, or else hold a monitor off screen showing the contestant’s name.  It felt Drew didn’t know the contestant’s names that were in the far 2 left podiums for the whole show.

I wonder how Cliffhangers is going to suffer this year (and honesty a lot of games) without being able to ask the peanut gallery for help.  For probably the first time since the 70s, the contestants are going to actually have to accurately price prizes without help.

It's going to take a while getting used to it, but the show's going to work just fine without an audience.

They should change the yellow podium to a different color since it was hard to see the bids on there.

^Depends on how you look at it. RuPaul was probably meant to be the second out of three Nighttime specials, so it was assigned 40SP. We don't know if this one then "fills in" the missing number or continues the numbering.

Nice to see the show back in action, but this really should have been a 5/6 or 6/6 show. Moreso, it didn't feel *that* awkward without an audience, so I think the show's fine.

I'm trying to see why they had PaN for the third number when they literally could have done $2X,438 with the same choices. My conspiracy theory was that they put it in the first digit if the first car wasn't won, and if too much winning happened, they'd place it in the last digit, but that doesn't really hold up because of a lack of repeating digits. Maybe it replaced Lucky 7, if we're looking for something else short?
"If any show, forget sports, Price is Right, [the audience is] the star of the show. Somebody... coming on down and losing their minds, and ... crying, that's the show. The show isn't me, the show isn't necessarily [a] can of soup, how much that is, it's watching people go bananas, and there's going to be some of that missing."

-Drew Carey, interview with Athletic, September 16, 2020

Well, that was...something.  I’m actually quite impressed with what they’re pulling off here — it’s no simple task taking a show so heavily focused on its audience participation and making it work with so few changes.  I have only the highest of praise to give in that regard.

I do think Let’s Make a Deal pulled off the audience bit somewhat better, though.  I guess only having 10-15 contestants standing in the pit would have looked really awkward, but LMAD’s touch of adding a virtual contestant element really made for a show that actually felt kind of “normal.”  I’m being very nit-picky here, however.  I also have no idea how a virtual audience would work for a show like Price, but it would have been a cool touch if they could have pulled it off.  Maybe they’ll figure out a way to do it later on in the season.

It was quite different hearing the Big Wheel beeps echo in the emptiness of the studio.  Reminded me a bit of the 30th Anniversary Vegas special.

I do like that they put a great amount of effort into making the show special.  The prize selection was great across the board, and dammit, it was nice seeing a primetime special again that’s just about the contestants with no “special guests.”  I want more of these! 😝
Pardon my language, but I do believe we all need to calm the f*** down.

Can anyone who recorded it post a picture of the disclaimers at the end of the show? I tried to read quick and it talked about taking a trip within a year, I am curious what it fully says because what if some of these hotels close down within a year or they can't travel because of covid will the contestant get the cash value? Very interesting thoughts in today's world

“Contestants have up to one year from the air date of their episode to complete any travel they have won, which deadline may be extended up to one additional year in the event of government restrictions and/or pandemic conditions.”

Oh, and one more nitpick as I went back to find that.  They had a really cool panning jib shot of the big doors opening to reveal the prizes at the end of the credits that was cut short by the shrunken CBS credits. DAMMIT! :P

I’m surprised they didn’t have Hans wearing a mask.

I didn’t really miss the audience that much, but I missed seeing the contestants be able to hug/celebrate/touch Drew or the models after winning.  There were some nice wins and it felt like the contestants weren’t sure what to do after.

Great episode, it's really nice to have a new episode again and see that the show can in fact work during COVID. The montage intro worked, very smooth transition to the opening first four calldown. It felt like the intros for the Barker Million Dollar Spectaculars. The lack of audience makes the set feel empty, but it still felt like the same show otherwise and things weren't as quiet without the audience as I worried coming in. It was also nice to have a primetime special with just civilian contestants and giving essential workers the recognition and thanks they deserve, it just stinks that the contestants and Drew have to be so apart.

What was Juan thinking with his guesses for the ice cream maker and popcorn maker? I know ice cream makers especially can be expensive, but man. Weird price distribution, jumping from $20 to $37 and then the popcorn maker just $4 more.

I thought how they did the Showcase Showdowns was the thing that felt the most off tonight. It was just really odd only seeing the spinning contestant and not the others waiting, and it felt like they were trying to get through it as quickly as possible.

Very quick lineup in the 2nd half. Bargain Game should've been won, Balance Game was understandable since I don't think that many would've picked the two most expensive bags. Pick a Number as the car game was an odd choice, I know they've done that a few times in recent seasons but I do wonder if as has been speculated it was a replacement for another game.

First Showcase was more expensive than I thought, second I went a couple thousand over.

A little surprising they had trips as prizes, though notably they were all within the US. I'm assuming that will be the norm for a while.

The podiums should include the names of the contestants, or else hold a monitor off screen showing the contestant’s name.  It felt Drew didn’t know the contestant’s names that were in the far 2 left podiums for the whole show.
It looked like for some the podium was too large and he likely couldn't see their nametag. Either they need to have something with their names besides the nametag or lower the podiums a bit.

It would be too easy for at home contestants to look up prices.

I gotta say, this was a pretty good start to the new season! I loved how Drew’s supporting a beard!

Grand Game: Fitting how a Grocer would ace this. Also, it was played for $20K

Bargain: I definitely would said Alaska.

Balance: I knew it was $26,415. I tried getting the cheapest new trailer on my first HYP game (it was about $21K I think).

Showcases: $34,500 was a really illogical bid on the second one.

Interesting how there’s no audience. There was an audience track, but it feels quite empty (which isn’t surprising). Either way, the show did a great job in updating the set!

By audience members, I meant strictly as just part of the audience.  Perhaps like friends or family of contestants rooting them on.  I should have elaborated a bit more. :)
