Mount Rushmore of game show hosts
« on: November 15, 2020, 05:17:46 PM »
If you could put four of the greatest game hosts on top of Mount Rushmore, who would they be?

  1. Bob Barker
  2. Alex Trebek
  3. Gene Rayburn
  4. Even though he is still alive, Peter Marshall.

Your thoughts and please be gentle.

My votes

1. Bob Barker.

2. Alex Trebek.

3. Monty Hall.

4. Wink Martindale.
Adjustments that should be made to pricing games to make them fairer: Secret X: Add a 3rd SP so that perfect pricing ensures a win. 1/2 Off: Add a 4th set of SPs so that perfect pricing ensures a win. Master Key: Add 2 more SPs so that perfect pricing ensures a win. Rat Race: Add 2 more SPs so that perfect pricing ensures a win.

The following pricing games should be retired because there's no way or no easy way to make them fair: Spelling Bee, Plinko, Punch a Bunch, Pass the Buck, Let em Roll, 3 Strikes.

The following retired pricing games should be revived: $uper $aver, Give or Keep, Buy or Sell, Hurdles, Bump, Penny Ante, Credit Card, On the Spot, Split Decision, Add em Up, Walk of Fame, Barker's Markers, Magic Number.

Password looks like any idiot could have made it up, but we have 14 of our people working on that show. There is a great complexity behind the screen. It requires great work to keep it simple."

Peter Marshall was the G.O.A.T. for Hollywood Squares.  If you'd asked me 20 years ago I may have put him on based on expectations with his show, which at the time was one of the longest-running.  My opinion doesn't change regardless of whether he's with us or not.  I wish he would've hosted the 80s version (even though John Davidson was great there).  Not sure if MGHS Hour would've been more of a success if he teams with Gene, but his command and respect was brilliant

Gotta go with Bob Barker, Alex Trebek, Richard Dawson, and Dick Clark.  So many good choices, but when it came to what makes a great host, an awesome show, and the details, in addition to respecting the participants (contestants & celebrities), I see that with my choices

Barker and Trebek on opposite ends, I think that's the easy part.

But it comes down to how we really want to divvy up the other two, so this is where I want to fork off based off what we're looking for.

If we want to have different decades represented, Barker and Trebek are the 70's and 80's, so you might go Monty Hall for the 60's and Regis Philbin for the 90's/00's.

If we go solely on notoriety as a game show host exclusively, I think Pat Sajak gets a spot solely due to Wheel's longevity, and maybe you get Peter Marshall for Hollywood Squares or Richard Dawson?

If we go off of Emmy nominations, it should be Sajak and Dick Clark. Although, if you want to extrapolate and put the 1st, 3rd, 16th, and 26th winners, like Mount Rushmore, it'd be Peter Marshall, Allen Ludden, Alex Trebek, and Ben Stein & Jimmy Kimmel sharing a spot  :P
"If any show, forget sports, Price is Right, [the audience is] the star of the show. Somebody... coming on down and losing their minds, and ... crying, that's the show. The show isn't me, the show isn't necessarily [a] can of soup, how much that is, it's watching people go bananas, and there's going to be some of that missing."

Live for the present.  Embrace the future.  Our favorite game show is still producing excellent, high quality, exciting, hour-long* shows every weekday throughout its traditional season window.  It’s as good as it’s been in a long, long time.  If the 1980s were the ‘good ole days’ for the Barker era, so is RIGHT NOW for the Carey era.  Don’t worry about what the future holds.  It will play out in due time.  Enjoy what we have right in front of us in the meantime!

Barker, Trebek, Cullen, and Martindale. Even though Barker and Martindale are still alive, they’re still easy picks regardless.
