August 16, 1961 - look who's filling in for Don Pardo...
« on: June 05, 2022, 03:43:39 AM »
This episode is of signficance as regular announcer Don Pardo is bedridden with laryngitis. So filling in tonight is none other than...Johnny Olson. I need say no more except that it's odd to hear Johnny do The Price Is Right and not say "Come on down!"

The bargain hunters for tonight:

* Herbert Fuller, an insurance supervisor from Agawam Town MA. He won $6711 in prizes last week.

* Ann Burroughs, a fashion consultant from Milford CT.

* George Kozel, a Navy boilerman from Baltimore MD.

* Mary Robinson, a housewife from Ft. Mitchell KY.

All contestants receive a year's supply of Dove soap, from Lever Brothers.

First item: A boat. The Brunswick Martin Sea Lion 108 equipped with a 375 HP Evinrude motor and towed on a Holtzclaw trailer. Price authorities: Brunswick marine, Little Falls MN; Evinrude motors, Milwaukee WI; and Holtzclaw trailers, Evansville IN.

Mr. Fuller starts anywhere with minimum bids at $100:
(*--frozen bid, last bid buzzer follows)
----FULLER----BURROUGHS----KOZEL----ROBINSON----
----------500 --------600 --------700 ---------800
----------900 -------1000 ------1300 --------1500
---------1700 -------2300 ------2400 -------2500
--------*2000 -----*2300 -----*2900 ------*3000
Actual retail price: $3154, with Mrs. Robinson winning.

Second item: A charm bracelet with five moveable charms containing 30 disminds weighing 1.82 karats. Held on a 14-karat gold bracelet. Price authority: Johnston Jewels, Waldorf-Historia.

Mr. Gates opens the bidding anywhere. Minimums are $50:
----FULLER----BURROUGHS----KOZEL----ROBINSON----

----------200  --------250---------450 --------550
----------600 ---------700 --------750 --------800

---------*600 ------*1250 ------*1300
Actual retail price: $1500, with Mr. Kozel the winner and he hit the bonus bell. He now has a chance to win a ring by picking it out from four other rings--a coffee ring, a cheese ring, a fruit ring and a nut ring. They are all hidden under serving tureens, then six models all dressed as French maids shuffle them around (to a recording of "Colonel Bogie March"). Mr. Kozel chooses tureen no. 2--and is correct.

The winner of the fur sweepstakes is announced for themink coat from Schiaperelli, the price of which is $4800. The names on the postcards drawn from the tumblers are:
* Joanne Uhlmann, Bay City MI - $7795
* F.S. Valentine, Orlando FL - $3850

Lillian Kramer is the winner of the mink coat and will be flown to New York to be a contestant on the show. The other four people receive a 23-in. Admiral BW TV set.

Mr. Kozel starts and it's a one-bid item:

Actual retain price: $1525, with Mrs. Burroughs the winner and she hit the bonus bell. She is asked to sing her favorite tune as Dave Carey plays it on the piano, so she does the first line of "La Vie En Rose." For her bonus, she will appear in the forthcoming movie "Road To Hong Kong" with Bob Hope, and for filming, she and her husband will be flown to London, England for a week via Sabena Airlines.

Last item: A beaver jacket, a sable stole and a mink coat. Price authority: Schiaperelli furs, New York.
