Plinko results determined ahead of time?
« on: February 12, 2024, 11:11:04 AM »
It feels like they set up wires ahead of time to guide the plinko chips into specific destinations no matter where you drop it. The destination changes after each drop but the results are the same no matter where you drop it. The contestants that won zero dollars never had a chance to win anything.

If it had no wires, the top prize would have been won by now.

Ignoring the silly conspiracy theory-mongering rampant in this post, it is an interesting math question to ask - "Should we expect a 50k winner in Plinko?"

There are two cases to consider here: perfect strategy, and historical strategy.

Perfect strategy implies a contestant will drop the chip down the center every time, which results in 10k about 22% of the time. To do this 5 times in a row has a chance of 0.22 to the fifth power = 0.0005. In summary, if a player has 5 chips, we should expect to see a 50k game about 5 times in 10000 playings....not very likely.

Historical data suggests that players hit the middle slot at about a 14% rate. Raising this to the 5th power yields 0.000054.

So, no, we should not have an expectation of a perfect game by now....or anytime soon.
