He would say "This statement is false." If it was false, he was telling the truth. Thus, a paradox. So he would either be let go or he would be sawed in half, one half dropped off the cliff and the other fed to the lions.

There is no "let go" situation.  The explorer is either going to be thrown over a high cliff or be eaten by lions.  How would the man be "let go"?

There is too. Find the loophole.

He would say "This statement is false." If it was false, he was telling the truth. Thus, a paradox. So he would either be let go or he would be sawed in half, one half dropped off the cliff and the other fed to the lions.

Negative, but on the right track.

This would be true and false at the same time, but not the right answer.

He said "You are going to throw me to the lions"?

If this were TRUE, then he would have to be thrown off the cliff, therefore making it impossible to be true.

Only if the statement were FALSE could he actually be thrown to the lions, so it is impossible for him to be thrown to the lions.

Therefore, the chief had to let him go because that statement makes both alternatives impossible.

PIR85 is correct.  The explore would have to make a paradoxical statement.
Well, this week was supposed to be a return to normalcy, but that's clearly not allowed.  Since you feel there is no need for this week's FPG to continue, I feel there is no need to continue as an FPG host or a G-R.net member.  Since most people are so desperate to push me out of here, why delay it?  I would have preferred that everybody publicly admitted it rather than string me along for the last two days, but it is what it is.  I am hereby resigning as FPG host and moderator, effective immediately.  whammy007 is the new permanent host.  No R-rated rant or airing of grievances from me.  Just a polite "goodbye for good".

Correctomundo and that is exactly what I have so no need to post the answer I had.

Here's a short one.

The day before yesterday Freda was 17. Next year she will be 20. How can this be so?

Freda was 17 days old two days ago (the day before yesterday).  This means today she is 19 days old.  Tomorrow, which will be a new year, she will be 20 days old.  This means that today is December 31.

Farmer Giles has four sheep. One day, he notices that they are standing in a way that they are all facing away from each other. That is to say, the distance between any two of the four sheep is the same. How can this be so?

Freda could also have been 17 YEARS old two days ago (the day before yesterday), which was December 30th. She turned 18 YEARS old on December 31st. That statement (The day before yesterday Freda was 17. Next year she will be 20. How can this be so?) was said on January 1st (the start of a new year). At the end of that new year, she'll be 19 YEARS old. Therefore, the next year, she'll be 20 YEARS old.

Three of the sheep are standing around the base of a small hill - facing North, South, and East.  The fourth is standing on the top of that hill, facing West.  The distance from each sheep around the base of the hill is exactly the same as the height of the hill.  Therefore, the sheep at the top of the hill is the same distance from each of the sheep around the base of the hill as those sheep are from each other.

Am I close?

The four sheep are standing at the most northern part of the world.
