TPIR Recap - 04/01/2016 (April Fool's Day Special)
« on: April 01, 2016, 02:40:50 PM »

Episode #7475K
Taped: March 1, 2016
Models: Amber Lancaster, Rachel Reynolds
Mic handoff: Rachel Reynolds

CBS is holding a contest where you have to write down every mistake that you see in this episode, and email it to aprilfools@priceisright.com. The person who captures all of the mistakes will win a trip to San Jose, Costa Rica from caravan.com (RT, 9n, Costa Rica Natural Paradise Tour) worth $3,788 – if multiple people capture every mistake, the winner will be chosen from a drawing. Before the first four contestants are called on down, George briefly explains the contest. I’ve decided not to list the gags. (except for Cliff Hangers changing to Yodely Guy, and the podium colors changing)

I hadn't really thought about this before, but the reality of death means that every day there are less people in the world than the day before.  In reality there are many more people in the world than this but for illustration: If one day there are 1000 people in the world and the next day 55 people die, now there are 945 people in the world. if 30 more die the next day now there are 915 people in the world. So we'll eventually become extinct as will all creatures as the same reality applies to dogs, cats, horses etc.

Minor point, but Push was an awful setup, with a $300 diff between her guess and the ARP.

With all of Hans' changes, they clearly weren't fully planning on a loss, as his crashing down the mountain was awkward. Cliff has been played awfully lately, last Friday notwithstanding.
S5x... the show's stabilized into something decent now, I guess...

I'll list one "mistake" as I don't think CBS is going to count it:

George announced the trip to Costa Rica as including a flight to San Jose - but pronounced "San Jose" as if it was the city in California (SANN hoe-ZAY), not the correct pronunciation for the Costa Rican capital (SAHN hoe-SAY).

It may be pedantic, but Wheel of Fortune once denied a player a bonus round win for the same thing (the puzzle was "MILAN ITALY", but she pronounced Milan the way Milan, Indiana is pronounced (MY-lun).

Question: I noticed the car in That's Too Much! faced left rather than right.  Don't they usually face right, or am I seeing things that aren't really there?

I would ask that there is no discussion of the various gags until after the contest closes (or at least, no outright revealing them), to ensure fairness for those who were unable to watch when the show aired. Thanks!

"Nobody cares about the guest stars." - Roger Dobkowitz

"Change isn't always good. Sometimes changing things is a terrible mistake." - Bob Barker

People are tired of the f**kery and drama, but if we'd actually talk to each other sometimes instead of a whole bunch of private conversations with other people, it'd go a long way to perhaps fixing the problems most seem to see in the site.

Wheel has strict pronunciation rules, especially on proper names like that. Price of course has no such thing.

Only problem is that the contest ends in a week.

Gameplay-wise, today's show was the definition of "a tale of two halves". No excuse for that Cliff loss, though.

Three contestants celebrating their birthdays? When was the last time that happened?

Did they show the other prices after the contestant stopped on That's Too Much!. They're not listed here.

Wheel has strict pronunciation rules, especially on proper names like that.

This is because proper names have only one pronunciation. A contestant mispronounced Coppola as "Cuh-POH-la" instead of "COP-o-la" and they wouldn't take it. Then there was all those mispronunciations of Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa.

Yeah, the following price (which is where the contestant should have stopped) was shown. Forgot to mention that in the recap - thanks for reminding me, though.

With all of Hans' changes... his crashing down the mountain was awkward.

I'm guessing Hans "clinging" to the edge before gracefully drifting down instead of plummeting off the edge was a function of the mechanics of the game today and not a mistake.

That's a very smart wording in the official rules: "To participate in the quiz, viewers will write down all of the things which they see in the Episode which are different from a normal episode of the Show." While I was watching, I was making my own list of nitpicky, sarcastic mistakes that I knew wouldn't be on the official contest list ("The dollar signs behind the 18 and 63 in Money Game were upside-down"; "One of the light bulbs surrounding the Big Wheel was out"), but most everything I noted could be seen in a normal episode of the show.

Still, there were a couple of things I spotted where I genuinely didn't know whether they were official contest "mistakes" or not. There doesn't appear to be any penalty for wrong guesses, so I guess if I was eligible to enter the contest, it wouldn't hurt to include them.

On the other hand, there were at least two really subtle things I caught that I know won't be on the official list, but if I was playing this game for real, I'd be mad if I lost because even though I noticed those things, I didn't notice some other tiny thing.

I always love the "collection of small out-of-place things peppered throughout the episode" April Fools theme, and I chuckled a number of times at the gags in this episode. I'm just uneasy with the idea of making it a contest.

(I'm guessing that "The most intuitive answer was actually correct in Money Game" isn't on the official list of things which are different from a normal episode of the show.)

Shame they didn't mix up the cues for CH/YG the way I would have done.

I have to say I like the idea here. It's a change of pace and offers up a nice prize if someone gets them all. I didn't pay that much attention or enter, but I thought it was a neat idea. It helps invest you in the gags, you know? Makes you care and pay attention rather than letting it wash over you.

George knows how to pronounce everything.

A winless half follows a perfect half(even though Cliffhangers wasn't a wipeout it was still lost).  Jennifer got lucky winning the car despite making a bad pick on the 3rd guess.  Also in reference to ThatDonGuy there's also a city in Ohio called Milan(pronounced MY-lun).

Ever watch The Drew Carey Show?  Speaking of which, I wonder if they'll air this episode again as a repeat with "pop-ups" pointing out the errors.
