On April 28, country music legend Claude Gray passed away at 91 due to cancer.
You might not know him very well, but he holds an important distinction in the genre: Being one of the very first singers to record and have a national hit record written by Willie Nelson (who this past week observed his 90th birthday). The song was “Family Bible,” and Gray’s version reached No. 7 on the country chart early in 1961.

The Godfather of Poker: Doyle Brunson passes away (https://thespun.com/more/top-stories/breaking-legendary-poker-star-died-on-sunday-night)
The link to The Spun (edited into this post after I originally posted it) and other sites were not available as this news just broke within the hour. Below is a link to a tweet from a close friend Daniel Negreanu, which pretty much ends any chance that it's false. Of course if it's false, that a great thing, but getting to 89 (just under 3 months to 90) is a pretty good run.

FYI: Can't link properly from Twitter anymore. The entire tweet posts here (I'd rather link to it but something happened to where the feature for Twitter is disabled). Even though websites are starting to surface with the news, I think it's fair that I source the info from the most credible place
RIP Mr. Brunson.

Buffalo has lost a legend: Tom Jolls, former weatherman at WKBW, passed away today at age 89. Children would know him best as "Commander Tom", host of Rocketship 7 and Commander Tom's World

This is a big loss for the Buffalo community. Many in the area grew up watching Irv Weinstein, Rick Azar and Tom Jolls on WKBW for 24 years, making one of the longest running news teams in the country through the 1970s and 1980s until Rick's retirement in 1989. Irv retired on New Years Eve in 1998 and Tom called it quits a year later. They were this city's newsmen. Tom was the anchor and he invigorated the idea of doing the weather outside. WKBW to this day does their weather outside, pioneered by Tom. I pass their set at least once a day.
We'll miss you Tom.

Having personally met Tom during his AccuWeather forecast a few times I can attest how kindly he was. Sunday mornings have never been the same since Commander Tom retired. He also helped popularize the phrase "It's 11 o'clock. Do you know where your children are?"
Rest in Peace, Tom.

The matriarch from “Step By Step” was the first primary star from the ABC sitcom (anchoring the TGIF lineup) to pass. (Peggy Rea, who played Carol Lambert’s mother, died in 2011.)
As for “Three’s Company,” with Suzanne’s passing, only Joyce DeWitt and Richard Cline of the original cast are left; Jenilee Harrison and Priscilla Barnes, who joined later, are also still with us.
Thinking of her co-stars of all her shows at this time, and her family. Enjoyed her work for sure.

What an awful last few days for the classic rock community. All of those guys I admired too. Not a great start to December, and we're not a week into the month.
None were surprising though, especially April Wine, who had basically called it quits at the start of the year. RIP.

All In The Family creator (among many shows) Norman Lear (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/norman-lear-dies-age-101-legendary-tv-producer/), age 101. No cause given.
Norman Lear was a uniter. His brand of situation comedy programming had class.
Never again will anyone like him cross our paths.
RIP and say hi to everyone who was in your comedies that passed before you.
Brian
BTW: Regarding "All In the Family" and "Archie Bunker's Place," I consider it one single series, with just a renaming and rebranding. As did the old "Prime Time Guide" books. (Similiar to the "Roseanne" reboot becoming "The Conners," and unlike shows such as "Frasier.")
-
Rest easy Mr. Lear.
A true legend and icon. Some would refer to him as the greatest of all time (as it relates to his role). Could not agree more.
-
No television producer has been more influential than Norman Lear. Watch the first episode of All in the Family and you can literally hear the television landscape shifting. Taboo topics became commonplace and a little bit of television's innocence was lost. A great man, the world is a much sadder place without him. Rest in Peace, Mr. Lear.

Thing is, as loud as the debates got between Archie and Mike – and there were many – it also made clear there were rules and when one or both violated them, someone would call them out on it. (Often, it was Edith, and she had to scold both her husband and her son-in-law, and more than once.)
I watched when I was a kid. These shows bear watching again, and even the 70s-topical episodes have relevance today. Timeless values, such as privacy. Note that in the last "AITF"-titled episode, there is an iris-out when Archie and Edith are lying in bed together, Archie telling how much he loves his "Dingbat" and he'd be lost without her. (Sadly, that'd happen a year later, but ... .) Then the two begin to kiss and it is clear it's some kind of foreplay, before the iris out. I wonder if Norman Lear and the writers of that episode intended for viewers to catch that ... that sometimes, a couple's love life is best left private, between two partners. (As opposed to Mike and Gloria in the early years, where they openly made out, to Archie's disgust.)
Little lessons like that, including those you don't necessarily catch on the first few viewings, are ones that are the best, and Norman Lear's shows were so good at that.
His shows will live on, and be watched years after Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers pass away.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Toronto Indy when he was a driver (1999 and 2000), as well as when he was a non-driver (driver coach or Penske supporter) either 6 or 7 years ago. Amazing man. May he race in paradise
