What do you want to see this season? What do you think will happen this season? Are you feeling good about Bellamie as the producer?

More winning, or more winners.  To be more specific, at least 8 $100,000 winners.  To be more wishful, 2 (or more) $1,000,000 winners.

That aside, I don't know if it'll happen, but if it doesn't, it's not a big deal.  I think a season where everyone's having a great time is enough for me.  Even if it's not top dollar wins, someone winning the bonus round and/or dominating/performing very well in the main game is fair enough.  Doesn't need to be the top cash prize to label a show as successful & fun.

As for the new board, I hardly think I'm going to spend one second being upset over it.  I respect the art of change (except when it's just for the sake of change, but the new board is not a big deal TBH)

I don’t mind that there aren’t too many major rule changes, as long as there are sone cosmetic ones. For one thing, it’s about time the puzzle board got an overhaul. The display hasn’t been changed since 1997 for crying out loud.

As far as the game itself, as long as we see some good game play I won’t mind. I just hope they’re careful enough to avoid a repeat of the CHOOSING THE RIGHT WORD fiasco.

We started early huh?   Oh well.

I am definitely excited for season 40.   I gotta wonder what kinds of puzzle writing we are gonna have this season.

I also wonder if they updated the wheel amounts too.   We are overdue for it!

My changes I'd like to see:

*The 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s categories
*Movie and song title/artists that are not oldies (there was a puzzle in September 2001 that was about Shrek, so they need to do their homework and look up current/recurrent cultural trends)
*Fewer $500/$600 spaces, and the $750, $1500, or $2000 spaces. Comparing the Wheel values to the 1990s, it feels quite cheap adjusted for inflation, especially for Rounds 3+
*The return of Free Spin, the Surprise wedge, or bonus puzzles
*Prize puzzles with more destinations outside of central America (including Mexico and the Caribbean)
*No tossup before the contestant interviews. It's only for $1000 and doesn't affect who starts the game.
*A second, more expensive car as one of the Bonus prizes. Yes, it would be rarer than the cheaper car in the $25,000-$40,000 range, but it could allow some really nice cars/SUVs that were common in the late '80s and '90s back on the show again. A Ford F-150 is now too expensive for the show's budget it seems, and subcompact SUVs are starting to become the norm in Bonus Land

I would love to see the $750 return.   Heck a $1500 space in round 3 and a $2000 space in round 4 would also help too!

I’m really excited to see the new board, my only concern is whether they’ll maintain the board shape (the extra letters that extend 1 spot further on rows 2 and 3). A full-on rectangle seems like it’d be pretty bland.

A full-on rectangle is exactly what we had for 99.9% of the Chuck Woolery era (the four-line board debuted in his final week of shows), so it wouldn't be entirely unprecedented.

I know it looks exactly the same (albeit with a slightly smaller font), but I’m hoping since we’ve also seen shots of the board displaying the logo that we’ll at least get some fun graphical transitions for puzzle reveals and such.

Some Season 40 press I am sharing with you all.

First, Paramount Press Express has a press release (https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/cbs-media-ventures/shows/wheel-of-fortune/releases/?view=100789-wheel-of-fortune) on what to expect this season.

And Good Morning America did a segment about the upcoming season that shows the new puzzle board in action alongside a few words from Bellamie Blackstone.

And when Pat tries it out, it inevitably won't work!
(can they do that? have a letter "lit up" but not "touchable"?)

Here's some more about the new puzzleboard. Of note is the transition from graphics to the puzzleboard... at first glance, I thought the "blocks" were actually trilons! (would have been a nice throwback)

edit: Also looks like they simplified the "marble" texture on the blanks.

We just had the first two uses of the special XL wedge in the main game. It couldn't be taken to the Bonus Round, but two contestants were able to call a letter for the top dollar value. It was also a close game by the time we got to the Final Spin.

Unfortunately, we also had our first $100,000 loss...though in my opinion, it didn't sting quite as much this week when there are more chances for a big win. Three more days to go in the first week!

It was a good first week with a lot of winning this week, despite a tragic second episode in Bonus Land.

I really thought Brooke was doomed when he picked WHAT ARE YOU DOING for Bonus Land Friday.   That is a category I would NOT pick if it was a choice.

I actually got today's puzzle...on one of my favorite categories in Bonus Land.   Sadly enough to say I did NOT get Brooke's puzzle last Friday.

The last few Bonus puzzles, I've been noticing you needed to be letter perfect in the consonants.   YIKES!!!!

Looking at tonight's Bonus Puzzle, from my honest opinion, it was a bad choice the hard way.   The second word was very tough.   Methinks they are putting the more difficult puzzles in.

Some, but not most of the budget. I suspect they were pushing for a $1,000,000 win in the first week, and if so, that's nearly a million that they can save for future games.

OY.   I just watched tonight's episode.   That REALLY HURT.

Alane made a major mistake of picking WHAT ARE YOU DOING for Bonus Land.   Pat admitted in the end the puzzle was tough.   The puzzle was tough, but there were also THREE wasted letter choices in that puzzle, and Alane picked two of the three.   That was a true landmine puzzle.

I often call PHRASE/THING(S)/WHAT ARE YOU DOING the RAW DEAL list.   I had a feeling they were really making it hard for someone to play for the million with THAT list.

I actually got that bonus puzzle with RSTLNE. As soon as I knew that she picked two "trap" letters, she was done.

As it is, we'll have to pay attention to the Celebrity version as well regarding the budget, since Melissa Joan Hart's million dollar win also may have sunk the regular version's budget a bit. Still, I'd like one of the features on the XL version to become a permanent fixture down the road, and that could simply include returning the Million Dollar Wedge back on the Wheel in a future round up if picked up/unclaimed or lost to a Bankrupt. Still, I feel that if Jeopardy! is going to implement run-the-category bonuses again like they did during the later years of the Art Fleming version, Wheel should change the rules of its Prize Puzzle to simply a bonus, since $11,000 for a trip meant that outside of a Triple Toss Up sweep, coming from behind would be tough to do. And there's still at least seven more XL shows to come.

The third trap letter for those who are wondering was the K.   The A and G were the two that Alane picked and fell for.   The regular Wheel Watchers would nail it, but the average watchers would not.

The puzzle writers who did this puzzle for WHAT ARE YOU DOING were banking on the contestants to fall for at least two of the trap letters in this puzzle.   Alane took the bait.   That's why I consider those who pick WHAT ARE YOU DOING for Bonus Land, you have made a big mistake picking that category.   Many contestants fail this category because they often pick the trap letters.   And the puzzles are as hard as the puzzles in THING.   I often call WHAT ARE YOU DOING the second banana to THING(S) in Bonus Land.

I remember Kaia's million dollar loss...her WHAT ARE YOU DOING puzzle was somewhat gettable.   Alane's WHAT ARE YOU DOING puzzle was harder.

...but BAKED ZUCCHINI, ANNOYING BUZZER, and OCEAN KAYAKING were the toughest.

As it is, we'll have to pay attention to the Celebrity version as well regarding the budget, since Melissa Joan Hart's million dollar win also may have sunk the regular version's budget a bit.

The budget for the network show is going to come via agreements with ABC. They’re not taking from the daily version to pay out the network version. Being picked up by the network gives them a separate pot to work with for those however many games.

Certainly get the case that a prize should be bonus, and whatever they do with that, so be it, but a speculative change on one show doesn’t mean another show needs to change a rule for that reason.

They can't make the prize puzzle not count towards score because almost everyone who wins has around $15-20,000 with the trip. Take that away and then we'll have people going to the bonus round with like $7500 or $9500. That looks cheap. But they do need to fix it and adding the $5K bonus on the XL episodes just doesn't help reward the best solvers.

(definitely considering celebrity Jeopardy gets its own thread). but I really need some help here. since the first season (of the current celebrity run) and never got this issue before. Maybe because I got the desktop link on a non signed in computer. (does not explain why it worked once on the phone though.)

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council recently came out in disapproval of adults using ketchup on hot dogs. In a guide to hot dog etiquette, the organization decreed that for those 18 years of age and older, acceptable wiener toppings include mustard, relish, onions, cheese and chili.

I also heard on the radio that people who own restaurants in Chicago and they serve hot dogs, there is no ketchup in their restaurants what so ever..

Bellamie LOVES putting PHRASE a lot as one of the choices opposite THING.   I'm noticing that WHAT ARE YOU DOING is taking a backseat for the Bonus Land menu for the civilian version this season.

I apparently spoke too soon on WHAT ARE YOU DOING showing up as a choice for Bonus Land.   The Thursday and Friday episodes the contestants chose that category, which apparently is one I would NOT choose.

I think the Thursday's BONUS puzzle was more difficult than the Friday's puzzle.   But the Friday's puzzle had some traps.

I managed to talk to Alyssa via Facebook on the Thursday's episode.   Had she been in Bonus Land instead of Noah, she would have picked WHAT ARE YOU DOING over THING and PHRASE, BUT, she would NOT have been able to solve that puzzle.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is allowed to have their wrong opinion.

Just onions for me.

But ketchup IS an acceptable topping.

Just wait until the producers put up a puzzle that's something along the lines of:

HOT DOG WITH
KETCHUP
MUSTARD
ONION & RELISH

(I think that'd fit on the standard puzzleboard.)

It's rare to have TWO Million Dollar Bonus Lands in a row, but we had it today.   But I cringed when WHAT ARE YOU DOING was picked for the Bonus...yesterday it was THING.

The puzzle writers threw a toughie today...there were a few trap letters in that puzzle.   But it was solved.   I apparently fell for the trap.

We've had weeks on Secret Santa season on Wheel of Fortune in the past where the entire week Bonus Land was not won at all.

I'm noticing Bellamie and the staff are really making the contestants earn their wins with these tough puzzles for week 1 of Secret Santa.   You don't know where they put the LANDMINE or LANDMINES in.   Last night's puzzle was tough I admit, BUT that was nothing compared to the other three puzzles we have had this week.

I looked at tonight's episode with Kate...Oh my GOD.   LOL    What she said after Bonus Land was finished was priceless.

When Kate picked the Bonus Land category and apparently I call the PHRASE/THING/WHAT ARE YOU DOING the Raw Deal List (Bellamie and staff used that dreaded list the third time this week!), I was like, "You just let the skunks out."   (bad reference, sorry couldn't resist!)

"What Are You Doing" claims another victim.

I usually cringe when people pick THING OR WHAT ARE YOU DOING for Bonus Land.   I found that Friday's puzzle a bit odd, but somewhat gettable.   It's too bad Michael didn't solve it.   As Pat stated, that vowel that started the second word of said puzzle threw Michael off.

I kinda had a weird feeling when Michael picked WHAT ARE YOU DOING for Million Dollar Bonus Land, I was like, you just kissed the clean sweep goodbye.   The puzzle like I stated was somewhat gettable this go around, but it was left unsolved.

For the first time in 5 years (and the first time in the Triple Toss-Up era), a contestant has swept the game and solved the bonus puzzle! Ricky was really good at the Toss-Ups, so I had a feeling after the first of the "triples" that it might be a main game sweep. Less sure about the bonus round, but he did it!

We did, but that is because we have Wheel at 7 and Jeopardy (usually) at 7:30.

Interestingly enough - the station with Jeopardy showed the speech, while the CBS station showed their usual Family Feud, then cut to about 5 minutes of the speech before beginning the nighttime TPIR.

I guess just different outlooks on what they should show :)

...or that famous song from Young M.C.   "Bust A Move."

I gotta admit, when the RSTLNE was revealed in that puzzle, I had a sinking feeling Preston picked badly with the category pick.   But he picked some smart letters!   He made that hard puzzle look really easy!   He earned that $100,000 in my honest opinion.   That had too many possibilities!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING (Monday): WAVING MY HANDS

In my honest opinion the Monday puzzle was much harder than the Friday's.

I'd say Monday's puzzle was not as hard as Friday's. It makes more sense to pair WAVING with HANDS than to use QUIRK in a puzzle at all.

Tonight's bonus puzzle CERAMIC COOKWARE was much easier. CDMA clearly wins this one especially with the category In The Kitchen, so it could still be a balance of easy and hard for the week. Wait and see...

Post by: TPIRfan#9821 on February 06, 2023, 10:22:38 PM
You seem to imply it's a bad idea. I think I'm careful enough to sweep the Express and win the game. The Wild Card is only worth about $4,000 on average, and the MDW is such an outlier thing that I don't care enough.
Title: Re: Wheel of Fortune Season 40 (and Celebrity S3) Discussion Thread
Post by: mechamind on February 07, 2023, 01:22:36 AM
If you know just some of the letters, you can use the Express ride to your advantage. The only reason you might decline is if you think you can call a multiple on $3,500 and you know the answer already (bonus points if you can hit the space with the Wild Card).

The Mystery flip, on the other hand, is a true gamble. Funny enough, we had a BANKRUPT flip on the same episode.

EDIT: I guess another reason to decline is if you know absolutely none of the letters, and you trust the other two players to reveal them before you get your turn back.

Bonus Land 60/135.

I think PERSON is in third place with the losses: 8 total.  It just surpassed THING with 7 losses.   I'm surprised PERSON is getting more THING like in Bonus Land in season 40.

And THING is NOT a choice on episode 135 for the first time in the civilian version.

I didn't think it would happen in the same season, but we have another clean sweep! If we're not missing anything, this is the first time since Season 26 that we've had two clean sweeps in one season.

Coincidentally, the winner does some pro-wrestling, and the show has a WWE week coming up.  :oldlol:

So yesterday was a blue sweep, and today was a good day everywhere except blue. Ouch.

Still, second place was $28,950, which is pretty good!

As for the Bonus Round...someone knew the answer to the puzzle before picking their letters. :-D (I knew it as well.)

Another team week for Wheel of Fortune this week: WWE superstars and superfans.

Interesting that this week only the top three teams get to play in the Friday Finals.

As for Bonus Land...Connie, you didn't pick a good choice with the category.   Even though I did solve it, the difficulty of the puzzle was about a 7 out of 10 on the tough meter.   That puzzle had THREE wasted letter picks...and TWO of them were chosen.   If anybody picks at least TWO wasted letter picks in a WHAT ARE YOU DOING Bonus Puzzle, the odds of that puzzle being won are against you.

Yikes we are 0/2 for Bonus Land this week and unfortunately WHAT ARE YOU DOING was picked for a second consecutive time this week.

...but this time, this puzzle had a trap.   I apparently fell for the trap.   Not nice Bellamie.

I think we need to deviate from picking WHAT ARE YOU DOING for now...

I actually didn't fall for the trap. Somehow, MAKING A WILD COMEBACK was my first thought. I did, however, have their guess as a backup.

Also, to do with the Triple Toss-Ups...how does MAXING OUT MY CREDIT CARD fit under Fun & Games? :rollold:

MAXING OUT MY CREDIT CARD is more WHAT ARE YOU DOING.   FAIL on the producers on that one.

mechamind you did great with the Bonus puzzle not falling for that trap.   It WAS between MAKING A WILD COMEBACK or MAKING A BOLD COMEBACK.

The top three teams get to face off in the Friday Finals.

Any bets if the Raw Deal list is used for Bonus Land for the Friday Finals?   In my honest opinion, I'm gonna say yes.

We're thinking more about the Round 1 puzzle this time, FLIPPING OPEN MY NEW FLIP PHONE for Fun & Games and following the "X'ing a/an/the X" pattern again.

Coincidentally, I got a news article on my Android phone today about "dumb phones" (another term for a flip phone) becoming popular among Gen Z. The contestant who solved said she didn't have one, but it's possible that one of them will...not that we'll ever know about it.  :P

So for the first time in decades, someone's Final Spin had to be redone on air. And again. And again. The blue contestant had to spin the Wheel four times. :oldlol:

I actually remember watching in first-run long ago and seeing Pat spin the Wheel four times before cutting to the board. Presumably, that was the January 25, 1994 episode.

(Yes, they simply edited it out before this, and they'll probably continue after this, but it's always funny to see it happen.)

Two weeks ago, WHAT ARE YOU DOING only had 10 losses in Bonus Land.

Lately we've had some toughies in this category, and the losses are now up to 14 in this category, especially with a one worder.   I'm surprised just barely 2 taping weeks, 4 consecutive losses in WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

So it's another $100,000 loss...and the contestant had picked up the Million-Dollar Wedge in the third round but then hit Lose A Turn, did not solve, then never spun again. And she was one letter off in the Bonus Round.

Someone already thinks this will be picked up by online news sites (I have thought about proposing a ban on links to specific sites at Buy A Vowel but am holding off for now; The US Sun would be my first proposal), and we're lucky they're not picking up a $1,000,000 loss.

I ended up re-watching that Bonus Land at least 4 times.   The judges in my honest opinion made the right call.   I heard her say JUST WINNING IT, then MUST WINNING IT, then BEST WINNING IT.   NOT a trace of JUST WINGING IT.

It's unfortunate that Alexa lost the $100,000.   So close.

It's also unfortunate that just two weeks ago, WHAT ARE YOU DOING only had 10 losses.   NOW, including last week's WWE tournament, plus College Spring Break week, WHAT ARE YOU DOING's losses went up to 15 that quick!   My goodness!

Bonus Land up to this point: 63/150.   We have only 9 weeks left till the end of season 40.   The $6,000 Final Spins are up to 5 now.

Today's Bonus puzzle was a stinker!   I thought PEOPLE was a safe pick, unfortunately Bellamie stuck a real stumper in that puzzle.   It turned out to be a bad pick the hard way.

PHRASE: 27 losses
WHAT ARE YOU DOING: 15 losses (these past two taping weeks, this category has a current futility streak with 5 straight losses)
PERSON/PEOPLE: 10 losses (9 losses PERSON and 1 loss PEOPLE)
THING(S): 8 losses

The past 12 episodes, Bonus Land has been won only one time.

The show apparently had its first Radio City Rockette as a contestant in a long time. Unfortunately, I can't be sure if the staff would've allowed her to mention the Rockettes on air. They did allow it in the early 2000's.

Also, somebody solved a puzzle with the word VACUUM in it. I don't think it's the first time it has happened, but it's fun to note.

Thanks man! Honestly, I don't have any real bonus category preferences other than I'm not dumb enough to pick THING. Before the show I had said I'd pick PHRASE given the opportunity, but after that insane 4th round where I nearly lost the game my brain was pretty much mush. I just read the posts on the Buy a Vowel boards.   Looks like some of you had trouble with this WHAT ARE YOU DOING puzzle as well.  Well done Bellamie.   You stumped pretty much all of us with that impossible puzzle.   I hope this is not going to be the norm the last 14 episodes.  The last three WHAT ARE YOU DOING puzzles in Bonus Land were in EXTRA hard mode, but Laurie was the only one that deciphered last Wednesday's puzzle.

Yesterday there was a puzzle with the word beeper. Earlier this season, college students were asked to identify a flip phone. Puzzle writers, if you’re reading this, feel free to step into this decade at any time.

I think you missed the point - this week is grandparents/grandchildren, so it's doing more old school puzzles in honor of that.

The college week was probably making light of the fact that flip phones have mostly gone out of style.

And I would watch tonight's show, as one of the puzzles is two famous names that came together a few years ago.

I'd rather they let up on the Prize Puzzles like "A DELIGHTFUL RESORT BY THE SEA", where next year they'll change DELIGHTFUL to MAGNIFICENT and change SEA to OCEAN.

Tonight's Bonus Round needs no attention here. :rollold:

We only had 1 out of 5 Bonus Lands won this week.   BOTH What Are You Doing Bonus Puzzles were hard as heck, including tonight's!!!!   I really cringed when tonight's team picked WHAT ARE YOU DOING over PHRASE and LIVING THINGS, and I was right to cringe because Bellamie stuck a real LANDMINE in this category.

I'm thinking we reached 75 wins in Bonus Land out of 185.   They are trying to force losses.

PHRASE just hit 34 losses this taping week.   WHAT ARE YOU DOING hit 21 losses (this is the fourth consecutive season WHAT ARE YOU DOING has more than 20 losses in one season in Bonus Land)

"May the floss be with you." :oldlol:

A good way to start the week, with a $100,000 win!

I questioned Jeff's Mystery Wedge gamble.   I was bummed he picked the wrong one.   BUT!!!   Him hitting the $100,000 in Bonus Land made up for it and then some.   He picked the right category and picked smart letters.   He earned this.

We've had one too many appearances of the Raw Deal list for Bonus Land.   I mean really.

After the $100,000 win this week, Bonus Land just went COMPLETELY downhill.   All the puzzles the rest of this week were very hard.   I think they went completely overbudget with the wins this season.   76 victories out of 190 so far with five shows to go.

Well, we finished the season with a pretty normal episode, but we finished with a win

Not too much more to say, though I am guessing there will be a lot for the internet to talk about from the reruns. :P
