I don't know if it's too early to make picks but here are mine:

AL East: Boston
AL Central: Detroit
AL West: Oakland

NL East: Washington (I think this is their bounce-back year)
NL Central: Pittsburgh (They were close last time. I think they can do it this year)
NL West: L.A. Dodgers

AL Wild Cards: Texas and Cleveland
NL Wild Cards: Atlanta and St. Louis

World Series: L.A. Dodgers over Boston

Let's see how it goes.

I think the Toronto Blue Jays will get the AL wild card spot this year. Their pitching appears to be better than last year, plus they have the speed of Jose Reyes. Also, the addition of two new catchers in Dionner Navarro and Eric Kratz will help as well.

I think the Toronto Blue Jays will get the AL wild card spot this year. Their pitching appears to be better than last year, plus they have the speed of Jose Reyes. Also, the addition of two new catchers in Dionner Navarro and Eric Kratz will help as well.

There are several contraries here. The Jays pitching has been pretty terrible most of ST, and their rotation doesn't exactly strike fear in you. Dionner Navarro was badly overpaid for a second-class catcher and Eric Kratz is an NL reject, how that will translate to the AL is an unknown, but the results aren't always very good. Short of a miracle, the Jays will bring up in the rear in the AL East.

The Jays lineup has practically changed none since the 2013 season started and really, while Adam Lind, Brett Lawrie & Colby Rasmus sometimes show they are relevant, the only things to fear in that lineup are Joey Bats (Jose Bautista) and E5 (Edwin Encarnacion). Dionner Navarro isn't an improvement over J.P. Arencibia, who was becoming really terrible. It's not really beneficial. A healthy Jose Reyes is great, but he cannot singlehandedly improve this team, and I don't see it improving.

Orioles go 4-0 on Opening Day under Buck Showalter and defeated the Red Sox 2-1. From what I heard, Nelson Cruz made quite a first impression.

I had to work during the game since my store is only about five blocks from Camden Yards, so I could hear some of the cheering. Goodness, while I love football a lot, baseball is the better outdoor feel good sport and today was just a beautiful day for it.

That really surprised me, to be honest. It looked like from the way he played in Montreal last weekend it was fine. I guess he pushed it a little too far. They still have Ryan Goins who is a good second baseman, and of course, Munenori Kawasaki, who is a fan favorite to say the least. I believe they have called up Jonathan Diaz from AAA though, if I'm not mistaken.

The Mets, however, take three of four from the defending National League champs. Last night's nine K's in a row were not enough for Wacha who kept giving Mets free passes.

To make penalties for pitchers more meaningful the penalty needs to be increased to 20 games. 10 games means missing 2 starts. The penalty needs to be increased to 20 games to make it more relevant.
Title: Re: MLB baseball 2014
Post by: PatrickRox80 on April 24, 2014, 06:17:57 PM
That's the problem. Pitchers don't have the same schedule all other players do since they play once every few days. If a position player is caught using a corked bat, he's out for ten games. If a pitcher's suspended for ten games for using pine tar, he's really gone only two. Ryan Dempster circumvented around a suspension by having a start moved to the day after it ended.
Title: Re: MLB baseball 2014
Post by: GSB92 on April 24, 2014, 06:38:48 PM
Only problem is that games can go into late extra innings and you may need your starting pitcher to pitch in relief.
Title: Re: MLB baseball 2014
Post by: thepriceis_J on April 24, 2014, 06:44:54 PM
Figures, because he's a Yankee.
Or perhaps because ten days earlier he was caught doing the same thing. I mean, seriously, how stupid is he? This is 2014, not 1952 when there was probably a total of two cameras filming a game, if at all, while there are 20-30 cameras, if not more, filming every game from numerous angles now. He should've known better.

There has to be something better to help pitchers maintain their grip other than pine tar. I completely understand the rule about not altering the ball because that's clearly not fair. Does anyone know what pine tar exactly does to the flight of the ball?

I like how the general consensus is "everybody does it just don't get caught." Everybody's cool with this, but when it comes to PEDs, it's like "blacklist him now!" Sure, PEDs are different from pine tar, but rules are rules.

Fernando Rodney blows a 1-0 save in the ninth inning to the Rays and the Mariners lose it 2-1.  Disappointing, but the Mariners have been playing good ball as of late.  It's too bad a flu bug has been going around the clubhouse negatively affecting the play of the team.  Playoffs is likely a pipe dream, but if the M's finish over 500, that's a successful season in my book.

Title: Re: MLB baseball 2014
Post by: moneygamelover on May 16, 2014, 12:03:01 PM
You the rate of such surgeries is way up since the turn to the 21st century. Pitchers are throwing harder and faster than ever so we're seeing a lot of strain on tendons and ligaments. Perhaps it would be best to really limit the innings of all pitchers below the age of 25 to reduce the risk though there's no way to eliminate that risk. Did anyone hear about that pitcher who threw 194 pitches in a high school game? That's absolutely asinine.
Title: Re: MLB baseball 2014
Post by: PatrickRox80 on May 16, 2014, 12:18:31 PM
194 pitches? At that rate, he's going to need Tommy John before he even gets drafted. There's no point in throwing that many at that age.
Title: Re: MLB baseball 2014
Post by: someguy23475 on May 16, 2014, 03:52:47 PM
I wonder if perhaps pitchers are "babied" too much, which actually causes more strain on the ligaments. Years ago, pitchers would throw 150, even close to 200 pitches in a game, and didn't have many problems. Nolan Ryan is a good example of that. It could be mechanics.

One theory I heard by former 30 game winner Denny McLain was that lowering the mound after 1968 causes more strain on the arms and motions of pitchers. I don't think he cited any kind of scientific research with that comment.

My biggest surprise are the Milwaukee Brewers. Ryan Braun is playing like he never left the Brewers last season. I think Milwaukee put what happened last year and moved forward. Granted it's early, but I think the Brewers have what it takes to make the playoffs.

My biggest disappointment is the Pittsburgh Pirates. Last season, they made the playoffs for the first time in 2 decades. This season, they're off to a 19-26 start. If the Pirates don't improve soon, they can forget about making the playoffs.

I'm truly surprised that the Blue Jays and the Angels are doing well. Like the Brewers, I think they may have what it takes to go far. I don't know what happened to the defending world champs. The Red Sox have lost nine straight, including today on a walk-off error in the 15th.

Either last year and the year before and Toronto lead the division for a good clip and the whole division was strong.

That being said the division this year sucks. The Orioles are 2.5 games back of Toronto at this point and they're one game from .500. For comparison, in the AL Central and AL West, teams with a record of .500 are 5.5 games back of the division lead in both divisions.

I agree with Adam about the Blue Jays, they may be having a nice run right now, but it's not going to last. I wouldn't count them out for the post-season, I wouldn't count any team out at this point, but the Blue Jays are probably going to falter.

I'm not too sure about Milwaukee. I think they could keep it up, it might be difficult with the Cardinals chasing them down, but they've been playing well since the word go.

I think Milwaukee is more for real than some think but when it comes to baseball I'm always going to believe in St. Louis. Their track record is just so historically good you have to trust them. On the other hand it's a sad commentary on the A.L. East if Toronto wins it.

The just-concluded four-game series Atlanta had with Boston (two here, two there) shows why Atlanta will probably not make the post-season or if they do they won't get past the first round. They had the lead in three of those games and could not maintain it, losing those three (getting swept in the series).

If tonight's Red Sox/Rays game is any indication, it's that the MLB needs to look into whether or not hitters are being thrown at. The umps have way too much authority.

First of all, how does Ubaldo Jiminez still have a job? Six walks in 5 2/3? Come on, now.

Second, I know it's only Britton's second blown save and blown saves happen, but this was perhaps the worst time ever to blow a save. Not against the division rival who you're trying to chase down.

Third, I'm shocked that this was the Yankees first walk off win of the season. Awfully late.

Your division leaders at the All-Star break:

AL East: Baltimore
AL Central: Detroit
AL West: Oakland

NL East: Tie between Atlanta and Washington
NL Central: Milwaukee
NL West: LA Dodgers

The second-best team in the majors is not leading their division. The Angels are 1.5 behind Oakland. Plus, Milwaukee fell back down to earth yesterday but won against St. Louis today to stay on top of the NL Central. There is also a 3.5 game difference between Milwaukee and fourth place Pittsburgh.

Jeter got a great reception from the crowd (as expected), but just before his 1st hit you could hear someone doing the"overrated" chant. I loved how he hit that double just about a second later. Also, when he was removed from the game and got his final rousing applause from the crowd you could hear Frank Sinatra's New York, New York playing in the background. That was pretty cool. It's only fitting that Derek Jeter went 2 for 2 in his final All Star Game appearance. Jeter is a 5 time world champion, a 7 time American League Champion, a member of the 3000 hit club, the Yankees all time hits leader, and a clutch performer. As much as he did at the plate, the greatest play I ever saw Jeter make was that sensational defensive gem when he threw out Jeremy Giambi in game 3 of the 2001 ALDS VS the A's. I know Jeter will be a 1st ballot Hall of Famer and I also hope the Yankees retire his number 2.

It's been 29 years since they made the post-season.  I would love to see it happen.  It was so exciting having the Pirates back in the playoffs last year after an over two decade long drought.

If the Royals make it, then every team will have qualified for post-season at least once since the advent of the Wild Card in 1994, except for the Toronto Blue Jays.  Their last post-season appearance was in 1993, the last year before the Wild Card began.

It's slipping away.....

Hang on Royals!  Hang...on....Cat....Woman!!!!!

I really don't want the Tigers to win that division AGAIN.  They've gone to 2 World Series now and both times were smoked by the NL and eventual World Champions, the Cardinals in 5 games in 2006 and the Giants in 2012.

The Royals have not seen post season action in 29 seasons.  The Orioles last won the World Series over 30 years ago.  I realize it's 30 years now for the Tigers but they've had 2 shots at it and lost big time both times.

I like seeing the Nationals bounce back after a disappointing 2013.  I hope the Pirates can some how manage to qualify again for a Division Series.  The Dodgers I'd love to see win the west too, as they've not won the World Series since 1988.

From 1974 until 2002 I was a die-hard Yankees fan.  In 2003 my feelings toward the team cooled, first with the acquisition of Roger Clemens (never liked him, never will), then Alex Rodriquez (I also never liked him and never will).

With the advent of steroid usage and preposterously inflated home run totals, I somewhat lost my passion for baseball.  Now that things seem a bit more normal, I am starting to like it more again.

I dislike that they moved the Astros to the American League West.  The Diamondbacks should have been the team to go to the A.L. instead.  I do like that they have a wildcard play in game now, giving teams much more incentive than before to actually win the division outright.  Also by doing this, it makes it much more challenging now for a wild card team to make it to the World Series and then win it.  From 1995 - 2012 there were an inordinate amount of wild card teams making it to the World Series and also winning it.

Sadly, due to my work schedule and my life schedule, I have not been able to watch any games this year.  I'll tune in the MLB network to watch an inning or two and some of the programming they offer from time to time, but I'm a far more casual fan now than I was 20, 30 and 40 years ago.  It's unfortunate games take far too long now, with pitchers stepping off after every pitch, and batters stepping out of the box to readjust their gloves after every pitch.  I hope this new commissioner will address this.  I also wish they would play more post-season games at 4pm EST, including some World Series games.  Starting them at 7pm and 8pm and seeing that they take at least 4 hours now makes it impossible for many to watch, hence the dwindling television ratings.

No team should have switched leagues. I can't stand interleague games, especially on a daily basis. If they were that concerned about inequality about divisions, then remove the Central and put all teams in either East or West. You could work out who goes to the playoffs in that scenario.

The previous suggestion that the Diamondbacks should have been moved to the American League couldn't be more wrong. We needed to stay in the N.L. West to maintain our rivalries with the Dodgers and Giants. Had we moved to the American League we would have NO rivalries. Sports aren't nearly as much fun without rivalries.

The Astros had a much longer standing rivalry with the Dodgers.  The Astros were a National League team for 51 seasons.  The Diamondbacks are comparatively speaking much newer.  And while they have established rivalries themselves, the Astros had rivalries in the National League for over half a century.

And it'll only be a matter of time before the Yankees are eliminated too. If that happens, I think this will be the first time that neither Boston nor New York will be in the postseason for the first time since the current six-division setup was devised in 1994.

Absolutely terrible time for this to happen. I'll need to get the full details, but terrible news.

On the other hand, the O's have lost Manny Machado, Matt Wieters, and, for a time, J.J. Hardy to injury and they're still chugging along. I think they could still do it, but it's a shame that Chris Davis won't be apart of it.

Amazing that pretty much every team in baseball that held big leads in their respective divisions are now either clinging on, or have no chance of making the playoffs. It happened to Toronto, who had a 6 game lead in early June, Atlanta who had a lead of about 6 games as well. Oakland had a huge lead, and Detroit as well. That said, Oakland and Detroit appear to be in good shape, it's Atlanta and Toronto that have surprised me. I thought those two teams were gonna make it.

Derek Jeter was the classic old school baseball player. He had humility. He played the game on natural ability.  He put winning first. And in a rarity in today's world he played his whole career for the same team. And the way it ended tonight was completely fitting. It was more fitting than if he would have hit a home run because that hit was a classic Derek Jeter style hit. Derek Jeter will be the last player to wear a single digit number for the Yankees as his number 2 will certainly be retired. Derek Jeter will be a certain first ballot Hall of Famer. Congratulations to Derek Jeter on an outstanding career. :)

If Detroit loses to Minnesota and Kansas City wins against the White Sox, there will be a one-game tiebreaker for the AL Central title.
If St. Louis loses to Arizona and Pittsburgh wins against Cincinnati, there will be a one-game tiebreaker for the NL Central title.
If Oakland loses to Texas and Seattle wins against the Angels, there will be a one-game tiebreaker for the second AL Wild Card. This is the only scenario where the losing team misses the playoffs.

If there is a tie for the division, a one-game playoff is held. Hence the potential Pittsburgh at St. Louis and Kansas City at Detroit games tomorrow.

Barring a huge ninth-inning collapse, it looks like Detroit will clinch the AL Central and St. Louis will clinch the NL Central.

L.A. Angels (1) Vs. Kansas City (4)/Oakland or Seattle (5)
Baltimore (2) Vs. Detroit (3)

As of this post, Oakland leads Texas 2-0 in the top of the fourth.

I'm glad the Royals got a win after all those years and I've been jaded on the As in the postseason for a few years anyway. The great thing about it is that the Royals won their way into with seven stolen bases including the two key steals by Dyson in the ninth inning. The Royals kept coming back and fighting and they won it their way 9-8 in 12 innings. Go crazy folks! Go crazy!

Seeing this system in action I'm not so sure the previous system wasn't better with only one wild card per league. The Pirates had a strong finish and the Giants backed into the playoffs despite poor play and yet a single game now trumps a season. Under the old system the Pirates would be rewarded for their season with the right to face the Nationals. Instead with this system they are at risk for one game. This isn't an anti Giants post in any way. They did a great job taking advantage of an opportunity tonight. But I think the old system of only one wild card was fairer. I'd have said the same thing last night had Oakland won. I will grant that a one game postseason series can be thrilling as we saw last night. I will admit that the new system has accomplished its goals of keeping more teams alive/more cities interested later in the year and of providing some exciting postseason games. But I do think the older system of only one wild card was fairer now that I've a chance to see how the two wild card system plays out.

The Pirates and Giants had a similar finish to the season and finished with the exact same record. The whole point of the playoff expansion was to reward division winners by not having to play in this one-game scenario. It's designed to weaken the wild card, whomever that may be and give the top-seed a bit more of an advantage, which is how it should be when pairing the top seed against the bottom seed. These teams wanna feel sorry for themselves losing in the Wild Card Game? Win your division.

Way too many games. Under your system, the postseason would drag on well into November...at which point many northern cities begin to experience winter weather!

The number of teams as it stands right now is fine. If I could tweak any aspect of the current system, I'd expand the Wild Card round to a best-of-three series...and reduce the LCS to a best-of-five. I'm really not a fan of the seven-game series outside of the final round, which in this case would be the World Series...they just drag on after a while.

Yeah. I understand. I agree. It should be a Best-of-3 but a Best-of-5 LCS? No thank you... Because I want if a 3-0 defecit occurs to BOS for them to do 2004 again.

Why couldn't have they waited a year to expand to best of 7, I ask...

Anyway:
Tigers in 4 - Starting pitching is way too strong for the Tigers, though I think Baltimore can scratch out a win against Verlander
Angels in 5 - KC will keep it close but Ned Yost will be the decider, for better or worse

Giants in 5 - Because the Natinals can't have nice things
Dodgers in 5 - Kershaw gets two starts in a five game series and the Dodgers are good enough to take an extra game off the Cards

I was so disappointed when the Royals didn't win their game after the Tigers dropped a game to the Twins because they could've pulled into a tie for the division and I really wanted the O's to play the Royals rather than the Tigers. Oh well.

O's in 4. The magic shall continue as shall the home runs. We'll find some way to annoy Scherzer and Verlander. Our starters will somehow put on a good show.
Angels in 4. Love the Royals, but holy cow, they won that WC game without hitting a single home run. Try that against the Angels. Yeah, I don't think so.

Dodgers in 5. Cardinals will certainly give them a run for their money, but I think the Dodgers will hold fast.
Nationals in 3. I'll give a crazy call here and say that the Nationals turn on the burners against the Giants.

ALCS used to be best of 5 up until 1985.

So did the NLCS. The matches before and after that clearly were impacted. The Cubs in '84 would have had Game 6 against the Padres if the best of seven format was introduced a year earlier. On the other hand, if the series never expanded, the Blue Jays and the Angels would have won the pennant in '85 and '86 respectively.

Nelson Cruz gets the first runs on board in the division series round. Bet the Rangers regret shipping him away.

Absolutely not. Rivera rarely struggled in the postseason. His only postseason blemishes were Game 4 of the 1997 ALDS, Game 7 of the 2001 World Series (his only postseason loss), and the blown saves that you mentioned. The Yankees collapse was the result of the rest of the bullpen and the Yankees major stars completely losing all momentum (most notably A-Roid's hitting drought with RISP). Rivera is definitely NOT overrated, especially that he has 42 postseason saves, the most of any closer in baseball history.

He's only the greatest closer in baseball history. Anyone who thinks he's overrated should just leave the sport now.

Every single pitcher, no matter how good they are, has an off night. Mariano Rivera is the best closer that ever pitched in the game as far as I'm concerned. Also, he used basically one weapon when pitching, his cut fastball, which he discovered when throwing in the mid 90s I believe. Those career numbers speak for themselves.

Since the Wild Card format was adopted in 1995, only four teams have come back from a 0-2 deficit to win the series, the last of those being the Boston Red Sox....eleven years ago. Things are looking up for Baltimore and Kansas City.

I'm all for a Baltimore-Kansas City ALCS. Not only does Baltimore get to host the series, but the fun of watching the team that hit the most HRs going against the team that hit the fewest is totally worth it.

It's a damn shame Detroit has three Cy Young winners and two have gone to waste because of the absolutely horrid bullpen. David Price will have to pitch the whole game, and pitch well, if Detroit has any chance. Backs are up against the wall.

And to think this wouldn't have happened if Matt Williams had simply allowed Jordan Zimmerman to finish the game. Between this and Detroit's relief pitchers, the motto of the 2014 postseason is slowly becoming...

So, just to recap, the two teams with the best record in their respective leagues are now down 0-2 and no team has overcome that deficit in eleven years.

Of the three teams currently in that hole, I'd have say that I like the Nationals the best to give it a shot. The Angles could, but unless their bats warm up, I think KC will be hugely powered by the atmosphere of their home crowd.

Speed, fundamentals, defense, and bullpen. I love the style of the Royals and how they win. Plus Kansas City is an underrated baseball city. The Royals have great fans and now that the team is having success the country is getting to see that I'm supporting the Royals long as they're alive.

This Royals defense is SCARY. I mean, those two back-to-back, dive/slide grabs by Lorenzo Cain were absolutely killed the Angels. This team is fast, young, and good with their gloves. This is going to be a good series.

I feel that so far, the Royals and the Orioles have had the loudest, most boisterous crowds this postseason. I'm definitely going to enjoy the support I'll see from both cities.

Maybe next time Bumgarner will take the sure out at first base. Take a risk like that and it can come back to bite you.

FTFY.

Also, on these types of plays, it isn't all on the pitcher. Bumgarner was simply doing what his catcher (Buster Posey) told him to do. For all we know, it could've worked out; in this case, it didn't. And the design of AT&T Park didn't do the Giants any favours. There's no need to call anybody in these circumstances what you called Bumgarner in your original post.

Besides, it's not as if the Nationals are going to win the series anyway...I hope.

And if we're offering ALCS predictions, I'll offer 2:
a.) I think that whoever wins the ALCS is winning the World Series this year
b.) Orioles in 7. Both teams are evenly matched & play in great atmospheres with genuine fan support. The Orioles' will have their atmosphere for a game 7.

I wouldn't go so far as to call Kershaw a choker...yet.

The way I see it, the Cardinals have just really had his number the last 2 postseasons. Now if Kershaw struggles against non-Cardinals teams in future postseasons, then maybe he'll be regarded as the Peyton Manning of pitchers: great in the regular season, pedestrian in the postseason.

Until then, I'm attributing his postseason history to the Cardinals' ability to crack the code on Kershaw.

Royals went 8-7 in extras during the regular season and have now won four extra-inning games during the postseason (an MLB record). Absolutely unbelievable.

O's were lucky to even get to extras in the first place. Normally great closer Zach Britton walked the bases loaded before an out at the plate and double play somehow saved them. Bullpen slipped though (maybe it was the rain) and allowed the Royals to take a comfortable lead in the 10th.

O's aren't the Angels though. Bats aren't cold, nowhere near close, and they came back from a 5-1 deficit to tie it up. If they even the series up before they go to KC, they'll be okay.

That catch by Moustakas was one of the greatest defensive plays in MLB postseason history. And the fundamental soundness came through again when Butler hit that sacrifice fly right when the Royals needed it. Even in July none of us would have guessed that the Royals would be our American League Champions. To see a team go from three decades of futility to winning a pennant in such short time is surreal. What a fun, fundamental, and fantastic team these Royals are.

Can the O's pull an 04 Red Sox?
No. Also, in the '04 Red Sox situation, the Red Sox were the away team. No home team has ever done it. No home team has the advantage to play 3 in a row at home.

Pitching has been just as good as the Royals (outstanding bullpen tonight), but the hitting hasn't been. Adam Jones swings at everything and refuses to take a walk and everyone else is hardly doing anything. Take that and couple it with the Royals lights out defense and this series is all but over. It's so frustrating to lose all these close games.

I'll hold hope because the O's have certainly won four games in a row, but everyone but Baltimore is behind KC. All the magic, all the momentum, everything the O's were riding flying into this series was ripped right from under them and given to Kansas City. Two underdogs go into the ALCS and the Royals were the bigger one.

WOW! Congratulations to the American League Champion Kansas City Royals! In an era of free spending on power hitters and starting pitching, the Royals built their team around speed, small ball, and bullpen. And the real key to this run has been the GREAT defense played by the Royals. It's an amazing story, Kansas City has great fans, and we've just seen the most unlikely pennant winner of our generation, if not all time.

*Bursts into song*

When you wish upon a star makes no difference who you are anything your heart desires will come to you. If your heart is in your dream no request is too extreme when you wish upon a star as dreamers do. Like a bolt out of the blue fate steps in and sees you through. When you wish upon a star your dreams come true.

I've already gone over how disappointing it is, so let's look at the positives!

As with the Royals, no one expected us to be here. Many projected the O's to be last in the division. This has definitely been a fulfilling season.

I was cheering for the Royals before the ALCS, so I might as well pick up where I left off for the the World Series.

Just to note, those '07 Rockies who swept the LDS and LCS, were subsequently swept in the World Series. Let's hope the Royals can avoid that fate.

By virtue of the Wild Card game, the Royals are now the first team in MLB history to win the first eight games of the postseason.

This also ties an all-time postseason record; with the 75-76 Reds, who won Game 7 of the 1975 World Series, behind Joe Morgan's top 9 single, infamously after the Fisk waved fair home run game, followed by a 7-0 sweep of everyone the next year-that's never been done otherwise. Closest is 2005 White Sox and 1999 Yankees, who both were 11-1.

Now all we need is for St. Louis to come from behind and win the next three games in a row! "Show Me" Series, anyone?

Missouri loves company!

Well, if the Cards lose the NLCS, it means that we won't have an I-70 Series 2.0, as St. Louis, Kansas City and Baltimore are all located on that Interstate highway (with the latter city being the eastern endpoint). Of course, had the Cards won, they would've been guaranteed at least a rematch of the 1985 Series or the first meeting with the Orioles since the all-St. Louis Series from 70 years ago (which the Cards won), when the O's were known as the Browns.

Making him available out of the bullpen makes sense. He could give the Giants 2-3 good innings. But the post I was responding to suggested he should start. A starter needs to be able to give you 5-6 innings. Can you expect 5-6 innings effective innings on only 2 days rest? Especially considering he threw a complete game in game 5?

Since 1982, home teams are 23-3 in Game 6 and 7 of the World Series. The exceptions? 2003 Marlins, Game 6; Josh Beckett's (clinching) game, the last WS game in the old Yankee Stadium. Also, until Ventura last night, Beckett was starter to through 7+ scoreless in a Game 6 or 7). Only these two, Glavine in 1995, Morris in 1991, Smoltz in 1991 have done this over the past 25 years. There's also the 1992 Jays who won Game 6 at Atlanta, and Cleveland won Game 6 in Florida, in 1997.

The Royals scored 7 in the 2nd; most since the Giants in 2010 (8th inning, Game 2). 10-0 was the largest shutout since 1985, Game 7-KC's last World Series game.  Moustakas' homer was his fifth this postseason, which breaks a Royals record, and is second place all time on Royals postseason homers list; Brett, with 10.

In addition, only one starter in World Series Game 6 history got so few outs, yet so many runs and hits as Jake Peavy last night: Buck O'Brien of the 1912 Red Sox. Also the shortest start of any game, of non-injured players, since the Padres Mark Thurmond went 0.1 innings, in Game 5 of 1984.

For tonight:

The home team has won each of the last nine WS Game 7s, last road one was 1979 Pirates, who came back down 3-1 against Baltimore. Guthrie's career win percentage, of .454, is the 2nd worst for a WS winner-take all game, behind Curly Ogden of the 1924 Senators, at .440 (11-14).

Only two pitchers in the divisional era (1969-present) have started on two days rest: NYY's Ron Guidry, against KC in the decisive Game 5 of the 1977 ALCS, and Derek Lowe for the Red Sox, against the Yankees, Game 7, 2004 ALCS. WS history only has one-Mickey Lolich of Detroit, 1968, who beat Bob Gibson that year, in Game 7. Should we see Bumgarner in relief, he has 4 career (including one in the postseason) appearances there; 6.2 scoreless.

History absolutely favors the Royals. I say they win this just how they started; late rally, and in extras, like the 10th inning. A hero, a villain, a goat, some blame, some shame, all to be made.

Edited a history note, with respect to the 1992 World Series. Thanks, Teddy.

There's also the 1992 Jays who won Game 7 at Atlanta
That Series went six games, as did the 1993 Series, when they repeated against Philadelphia with that "Touch 'em all, Joe!" moment.

As for the Royals, it'll be a shame if they lose tonight.
Title: Re: MLB baseball 2014
Post by: PatrickRox80 on October 29, 2014, 03:51:40 PM
It's also worth mentioning that the Giants are 1-5 in Game 7's. They lost the winner take-all games of the 1912 World Series, the 1924 World Series, the 1962 World Series, the 1987 NLCS and the 2002 World Series before winning the 2012 NLCS after facing a 3-1 deficit.

The Royals have only played in two Game 7's and won them both: the 1985 ALCS and the 1985 World Series. They are the only team in the majors to win two Game 7's in the same year. Interestingly, they faced 3-1 deficits both times.

As I await tonight's game 7 I find myself reflecting back on the night of November 4th, 2001. On that night my Arizona Diamondbacks brought us what remains to this day the only major pro sports championship for the city of Phoenix by winning game 7 of the2001 World Series. (We have a few other pro sports championships with Arizona Rattlers, including this year, but Arena Football doesn't qualify as a major sport.) I can hear the call echo through time as though it was yesterday"floater. Center field. The Diamondbacks are World Champions." November 4th, 2001 will always be one of the greatest days of my life. But as dramatic as Tony Womack and Luis Gonzalez beating Mariano Rivera was and despite my personal interest in the Diamondbacks triumph, I still have to say that the greatest game 7 in World Series history was the Pirates beating the Yankees in 1960 on Bill Mazeroski's walk off home run. When game 7 of the World Series ends with a walk off home run nothing in baseball can be better than that.

As for tonight I like the Giants chances if Hudson can give them 4-5 good innings. As long as Hudson gets the Giants to the middle of the game with a chance I say they win. Bumgarner can give the Giants 2-3 innings out of the bullpen and the Giants have already shown they can hit the Royals vaunted bullpen. I think that the Giants are the better team at this point and I think it comes down to whether Hudson pitches well enough to give them a chance.

Congratulations on the Cubs job Joe Maddon. Considering he'll have more resources to work with in Chicago than he did in his successful stint in Tampa Bay don't be surprised if he brings the Cubs a pennant.

Giants become team since 1979 to win a World Series Game 7 on the road.

2010, 2012, 2014.  Expect their next World Series title in 2016 lol.

Madison Bumgarner should be inducted into the Hall of Fame tomorrow. He should be given every MVP award of every sport. What a performance. The Giants would LOSE this if they didn't have him.

He's the literal epitome of MVP.

Wanted the Royals to win, but holy cow you're gong up against a 0.26 ERA.

To throw 5 shutout innings on only 2 days rest is truly remarkable.

I was rooting for the royals to win this series.  I am truely wondering what the ratings will be granted I have been reading they are the lowest ever.

I am not even watching the post game.  I swear though, after bumgarner came in, those fox announcers just drooled over him.  I mean it was bumgarner this, bumgarner that.

Because it's not every day we see greatness like this. The guy is on 2 days rest and he absolutely shuts down the Royals for five innings. Simply amazing. Like I said, 3-0 in the World Series is astonishing.

Bumgarner's 2014 World Series stats: 3-0 with an ERA of 0.43 and an opponents batting average of.127. That speaks for itself.

I'm looking forward to hearing from the official scorer why Bumgarner deserved the win over Affeldt.

The rules indicate that the win should go to the relief pitcher who was most effective by "considering the number of runs, earned runs and base runners given up by each relief pitcher and the context of the game at the time of each relief pitcher’s appearance. If two or more relief pitchers were similarly effective, the official scorer should give the presumption to the earlier pitcher as the winning pitcher."

Both gave up no runs, no earned runs, and the same number of base runners.  Affeldt came into the game in a more difficult position with two runners on base and was the earlier pitcher, so seems like he should be credited with the win.

EDIT: It has come to my attention that this has been changed to a save for Bumgarner and a win for Affeldt.  Good on the MLB, poor job by the official scorer even mentioning that without knowing what was going to happen in the ninth inning.

A 5 inning save? That's a new one. Still, Madison Bumgarner was a BOSS this postseason and deserves to be remembered for his performance this October for all Octobers to come.

Major congrats to the Giants for winning it all. We are watching a modern dynasty, and it is glorious to watch it unfold. And Bruce Bochy may have just entered the discussion for best manager of all time.

another giants WS championship.  YAWWWnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Next year is a new year for all 30 teams. Heck, even the Cubs could freeze hell over this time next year and win it all now that they've got Joe Maddon  ;-)

Of course, some idiots in San Francisco think that to celebrate World Series victory entitles them to smash store windows and set cars on fire.

I would have pinch hit for Perez. Swings at practically everything, and can't run, especially with what happened earlier. I don't care about his high average in the series.

It's funny that the year I was born, the Pirates won Game 7 in Baltimore, and 35 years later, the Giants do the same thing in Kansas City. They can now compete with the Red Sox as the team of the 21st century, as each team has won three championships each. And they won it 60 years after their last championship in New York, which featured The Catch from a certain center fielder who was nicknamed the Say Hey Kid. Congrats to the Giants, and the Orioles thank you for defeating the thorn in their side!

0.26 ERA in the post-season doesn't hurt, either.

Cubs fans would be expecting a lot from him considering they haven't won a pennant in 70 years.

Well, Robert Zemenkis did predict the Cubs would win the 2015 World Series :)

I can only imagine the party here at home if Maddon leads the Cubs to a World Series. Of course, Chicago might party just a tad more.

Unless the Marlins somehow agree to move to the AL next year (it won't happen), that matchup can't be done, and Zemenkis is already proved wrong.

Well, at least the White Sox already gave their city that party back in 2005.

He also missed the team name, but was correct in the fact that Miami would have a major-league team.
